M6 6th Gear slowest speed?

On a flat road where I just need to maintain speed I seldom go below 55MPH in 6th gear. How slow can you go w/o damaging the engine?

TXSpeedDemon 10-09-2013 01:01 PM

I drive 35mph-40 in 6th all the time. Sometimes leaving it in 6th when slowing down to a stop to engine brake. I doubt it would hurt anything leaving it in gear all the way down to 1500 RPMs. The damage comes in flooring it when the RPMs are low. But with gentle enough acceleration you won't really hurt anything as long as the car is moving.

Chuck33079 10-09-2013 01:06 PM

Personally, I try to keep it above 2500 rpm, and at 55 I'm usually in 5th. Granted, I'm on the freeway for 5 miles on the way to work, so I'm not really cruising for long distances. If I were racking up a lot of highway miles, I'd be in 6th at 55 and not worry about it. Just make sure you downshift to pass. Lugging an engine at very low rpm is not great for it.

Arrvaxx 10-09-2013 01:09 PM

I'm with Chuck. I'll stay in 5th even at 60 if I know I'm going to be exiting or slowing down 'soon'. I tend to down shift at about 2500 RPMs in higher gears and 2000 in lower.

As far as slowest in 6th...maybe 50. But lower won't hurt the car.

The slowest I've been on 6th was 40mph (don't remember RPM....1500-2000?)

I'm sure you can go slower than that, but the car probably wouldn't like it.

Sixth gear is virtually unknown to me. I only use it on the freeway and then I still want to going faster than 55.

Not because of engine damage. 35-40 MPH might get me into 4th but likely still in third.

It is interesting seeing how different driving styles operate.

It takes a conscious effort for me to let the rpm drop below 3k. Gas mileage be damned, I've got to make up for the 40% of the time I'm creeping along in 1st gear at 12 mph on the freeway.

:iagree: Gas mileage is for folks who care, like the little lady. She tells me about how cheap gas is at some station and she saved x cents. I'm lucky to have a cost conscious gal but spending money on gas is better than spending on mods in my opinion.

Haboob 10-09-2013 01:38 PM

I use 6th frequently. Some of our roads have long stretches between lights and I'll throw it in 6th at 40-55 and just cruise.

Freeway is 6th all the time 55+ (except to pass or accelerate).

I usually sit w/cruise control and +/- my speed from the steering wheel. I love cruise control.

mag_black 10-09-2013 01:44 PM

I use cruise a lot w/ 6th. I'm usually switching at 70 on freeway which is about 3k in 5th. I have a really big hill to climb out of work so I tend to leave it in 5th at 3k to climb it. I'm in 4th to 5th in city and 5th is really only when I can cruise it out for a while. No point in changing to 5th when there is a stop coming up.

TXSpeedDemon 10-09-2013 01:47 PM

damn, you guys are making me feel old for cruising so slow!

Fountainhead 10-09-2013 01:57 PM

Cruise Control? I hear that in some areas of the United States that is used frequently, here in Orlando no way that's even possible. OK maybe from 12AM till 4AM.
I usually run 2-3K at whatever gear works, I like to keep the car at an optimum point to punch it and go if the situation demands it, nothing like needing a burst of speed at 45 mph when you're in 5th or 6th gear, it ain't gonna happen.

kenchan 10-09-2013 02:15 PM

on a flat road i keep rpm 1600-1700rpm if im just cruising around (not in cruise). this saves gas dramatically. not that i really care, but why not.

typically on surface roads im 2K-2.5k range.

hadokenuh 10-09-2013 02:16 PM

I think the manual says 33mph is the lowest for 6th.

:iagree: as soon as the rpm comes down rounding 2000rpm I downshift:tup:
I don't even look at the mph, its all about rpms for optimal advances

I normally drive my car a lot in 2nd and 3rd gear between 20-30 mph on my DD to work. But when I go the gym there is another stretch of road that opens up to 45-55 mph. I get to take it up to 6th :)

It's rather unfortunate living on a small island, 2.4 mile drive to work, and having to drive through school zones and a Naval Air Station.

forza370z 10-09-2013 11:20 PM

I only realize there is a 6th gear when I try to reverse my car sometimes.:icon17::p

luigi90210 10-10-2013 12:02 AM

you're suppose to be in 6th by 38mph per owners manual iirc

Troyz 10-10-2013 08:54 AM

I am going to look at that. I am trying to save on gas.

I too. That is why R is for reverse on the dash.

This guy nailed it. How else do you think Nissan can claim 19 mpg in town? You're supposed to be in 6th gear on just about any road larger than a 30 mph neighborhood street... I don't think so, Tim.

If you're trying to save gas, note that being in 6th gear at 35 mph is not necessarily the best way unless you can cruise without having to brake or accelerate. You'll get much better acceleration as well as gas mileage by being in the proper gear for each scenario. Of course, this is moot if you're in D in an automatic.

If you're cruising at 40 mph in 6th gear with no traffic that's all well and good; however, if you have to accelerate, you'll be more efficient with gas if you are in 4th gear rather than 6th. Light acceleration in 4th will get you up to speed quicker and use less gas. In 6th gear the car will bog at such a low speed, so you likely will find yourself mashing on the pedal harder than you would in 4th gear and it takes longer to get up to speed meaning you're using more gas for a longer period of time.

I don't really care about my mileage, but on average, I am getting over 20 mpg on my daily commute via Jollyville Rd and frontage road driving to avoid stop and go traffic. I'm lucky to get 12 mpg having fun with it :driving:

Riptide67 10-10-2013 11:39 AM

I am currently getting 15 mpg in town. I was at 18 before i put on the art pipes, intake, and pulley. Probably running pretty lean at the moment. In need of a tune here shortly, haha.

I used to get 19 in town before I modded the car.

IDZRVIT 10-10-2013 03:54 PM

40-155 mph is fine for 6th.

:iagree: And as for forum "rules".... who said anything about on a public road?

Elan 10-10-2013 05:42 PM

I stalled in 6th one time. Wasn't paying attention. :p

Luciano13 10-10-2013 05:51 PM

Here we go again..... Someone post a high speed, someone posts the "rules"members react positive and negatively...... Someone else then decides to post a street race and BOOM!!! Thread locked.
Can't we all just get along.:icon23:

Troyz 10-10-2013 11:35 PM

Totally kidding about the forum rules post. I am trying to go around 45 at the slowest in 6th. My gas mileage has been around 19.5 city/highway. I am trying to see if i can do better. Maybe less WOT.
