No 2+2?

Is there a reason Nissan no longer builds a 2+2 Z? I was unable to find anything about this topic using the search function so please forgive me if this has been brought up in past posts. I know Nissan hasn’t built a 2+2 Z since 1996, but it seems like more people might be interested in buying if there was a place behind the front seats to throw a few extra items for weekend trips, etc. Is it because they don’t want to compete with the G37?

m4a1mustang 08-10-2009 12:01 PM

Probably. The Z works best as a 2-seat sportscar.

theDreamer 08-10-2009 12:05 PM

Probably the G37, you want space plus extra luxury you got with the G, the Z is the true sports car with no thought about extra features needed (for the most part).

Yeah...Most 2+2 variations are ugly and lose the original proportions of the car. Look what they did to the stunningly beautiful XKE when the 2+2'd it.. The old Z's weren't much better..

look at the Panerama or whatever that Monsterous thing porsche built lol. Don't put square block in round hole. lol. G37 pure and simple.

The whole benefit of the 370 over the 350 is that it's more powerful on a shorter, wider platform. Adding rear seats would just lengthen the car and hurt the driving dynamics. Just to add though...the 370 does have two spaces behind the driver and passenger seats that can fit small bags like an overnight duffel.

Do you really think those "rear seats" (in the Z32 2+2) are pragmatic for seating adults?

Nissan went back in the design to capture the feeling of the Original 240z. The 2+2 was not what there aiming at. Currently and for the future do you guys remember what the 76-77 280z 2+2 looked like? not very sports car looking.

That's not what I had in mind. I was thinking more along the lines of the 911 with foldown seatbacks that form a storage shelf.

Thanks for all the replies...I will have to learn to pack lightly for weekend trips. Convincing my GF to hold her wheeled bag on her lap for 1.5 hours to make room for my clubs might not be so easy though.

I love the way the G37s looks, too bad I cant afford it or I would have purchased that instead. I have a kid on the way, the back seat would have proved useful over the course of my babies first 10 years.

nonthless, I assumed the Z didnt have it for two reasons, the G37 already has it, why compete against their own brand? and because it makes the 370Z lighter faster shorter and more agile.

G37 it the new 2+2

Last summer the wife and I spent 4 weeks and 7000 miles in our 350. This summer we again spent 2 weeks and 3000 miles in our new 370. Now last year we did laundry during our trip. Since we weren't gone as long this year we were able to carry enough clothes that doing a laundry was not necessary. So trust me you can get just about everything you need for more than a weekend trip in the rear of these past two models of "Z's".

When Nissan returned the Z to production this last time (03) they wanted a pure sports car. By doing so the 2+2 had to go. But so many like yourself still want the rear seat option so the G35 coupe was created from scratch. In other words a clean sheet of paper. The car looks correct and does not look like a stretched glob of something that it's not. It was placed with the Infiniti line of up scale cars instead of Nissan. Now if you want a Catholic sports car the new G37 is for you. If not then the Z will be your cup of tea. In this manner Nissan has addressed both points of view and did a great job of satisfying each.

The G37 and 370 strayed a lil in similarity as far as looks.
But if u look at 350z n G35. They really look like the same car
Except one is 2 seat and the other is 2+2.
Lastly the G35 lost 7hp. Different exhausts.

The G37 has now has evolved as an idividual with a twin engine instead of the 2+2 Z.
But I guess u can say it is still the 4 seat sibling.

They are based on the same frame, same engine, same differential, and same tranny's. The G37 may have deviated in looks from the 370Z but the underpinnings are still virtually the same car. A 2+2 Z would be essentially the same car as the G37.

Yes I do know this... though remember the car is stretched so even though they share almost all parts. Driving dynamics change. When I said stray, I meant in looks not tech.
As stated the G35 and 350 actually used to LOOK alike. The G37 and 370 DO NOT!
