Advice needed for tomorrow. (3 months and the car still isn't here yet)

I ordered the car on the last day of February, I was told that the car should arrive in 8-12 weeks. My contract says 90 days. Tomorrow is exactly the 90th day.

My gut feeling tells me something is wrong. First of all, the salesman I spoke to was definitely very experienced and knew what he was doing, several red flags were raised during negotiation. I went in and knew exactly what I wanted, he tried to bs me into buying whatever is available, then right when I was about to leave he acted all surprised and told me "oh I forgot, how silly of me, we can factory order one for you".

Finalized the deal, paid $2000 deposit and I said I wanted the car's vin number and was told I would get it in about 2 weeks. A month past and heard nothing from them. After another couple of weeks they told me they can't get it because the car is made in Japan and not the U.S. Sounds like a whole lot of bs to me.

When I went to the other dealer, I didn't bad mouth the first one at all, but I told them my situation and what I was told was pretty much "well we wouldn't do this, we don't know why they can't give you a vin number". The guy asked me what I wanted specifically and when to check what was in stock. Turns out they had one in Vancouver and one in Ottawa but they cannot sell it to me for the price that I negotiated, buy if I were willing to pay "a couple thousand more" they can get it for me in one day. They also told me they sold "3-4 after I bought mine and the all got it already". I'm not sure if it was a sales pitch or whatever because they told me in a hush-hush, friend to friend manner because they weren't allowed to steal business from another dealer, especially after I placed my order.

I gave them the benefit of the doubt and now the times up, I need some advice on where to take this. My guess is that they finalize the deal with me to reach a certain quota (they told me they needed 7 more sales and it was like 6:30pm on the last day of Feb). They didn't reach that quota and now doesn't want to sell the car to me at a price that noone else could match (I tried with at least 5 other dealers).

I don't want the deposit back and contract terminated after waiting for 3 months, I want the car.

EDIT: I posted a similar thread previously but that was when I was still in doubt and the 90 days have no passed yet, now I need some quick advice for negotiation tomorrow. Thanks guys.

Yes, I mentioned that as well in the OP, but that was before the deadline was reached.

I posted it here because I need quick advice on what to say tomorrow.

Its absolutely been a nightmare for me so far. I just want my Z for the summer. :(

Contact a corporate office and explain to them what's going on. Go above the dealership.

Magic Bus 05-26-2013 07:34 PM

Did you call the dealer that your ordered the car from in the past few days? They might have some good news for you.

I secretly went in to check the lot 2 days ago, nothing there yet.

Magic Bus 05-26-2013 07:48 PM

I ordered my 13 in May of 2012 and got it in Aug. Just a few days over 3 months, a little before the 3 month time span, I called to ask about the status of my car. They dealership checked and called me back, informing me that my car did ship from Japan and would arrive in approx 2 weeks, which it did.

Call them and ask about the status of your car on order. Don't see any need to be Ninja about this, you placed an order, gave a deposit, you have the right to ask.

If they can't fulfill your contract, hopefully you asserted in your contract to refund your $2k by tomorrow.

122554 05-26-2013 08:03 PM

Guess you have to ask yourself, "Is it worth the wait"? If not, ask for your deposit back. If yes, don't be a Carmen and wait for what you want!

Trips 05-26-2013 08:09 PM

If you do plan on waiting past the agreed time?

I would have them throw in some comps.

:iagree: push them a bit. You never know

raymondo510 05-26-2013 11:59 PM

It never hurts to ask, but knowing myself and after you had put a deposit and the long wait time i'd be a little upset. Give them a call tho and see what happens. If they feed you some b.s then maybe get your money back. If they say it will be there within the week...wait it out GL

mayday813 05-27-2013 12:16 AM

I ordered the last week of December 2010 and car was delivered third week in March 2011. If you have a VIN from the dealer they ought to be able to tell you where the vehicle is at. Or, get your $2k back if you can (depending on what the purchase contract reads) and order another one from another dealer.
If you ordered at the end of Feb. it's only been three months and I wonder if the plant experienced shutdowns or model change over for Infiniti that may have delayed the Z production line. They are both made at the same plant.

Amuse370z 05-27-2013 01:54 AM

They won't give me the car's vin number. That was already a huge red flag to me. They told me they can't get it because the car was made in Japan.

I don't want the $2k back, I want the car, they've already wasted 3 months of my time. Besides, no other dealer can match the price that they are willing to sell it for (which makes me think they are regretting signing me that contract).

mhcoss 05-27-2013 02:34 AM

run away from Nissan as fast as you can. That is my advice.

Call Nissan Corporate and email them. Polite direct and professional. There is no excuse for the dealer not being up-front with you, the PAYING customer. None. Waste no more time with them on day 90.

TripleBlkZ 05-27-2013 12:36 PM

I mean this with all due respect but you ordered something from a dealer that is coming from the factory/Japan. When anyone says 8-12 week or an eta like that it's an approx could be 14 weeks or 7 weeks when dealing with oversea containers. I did the same with my Z ordered in March 2010 and received it in June 2010. Coming from the factory don't think there is a way of getting a VIN# in advance so can't blame the dealer for that.

Also keep in mind depending on what type Z (color, options) you ordered if they have truly ordered one in for you from the factory it is hard to blame the dealer for not coughing up the cost now to ship you the same one from across the country with a possibility of getting stuck with 2 of the same cars.

The dealer does sound like they are shady and from what you have said without a doubt didn't handle/info you correctly but patience is a good think when ordering something that eta's are ~3months

Can I get confirmation on the bolded before I go in and make a joke out of myself?

Also, if what you said was true than the contract should not say 90 days. I expect the 90 days to include any inconveniences that might have happened along the way. It wasn't simply a ETA (8-12 weeks was said in words), it was written in contract (within 90 days of the date of this agreement).

I can't confirmt he bolded part but as to the rest of your post.

I agree that if the signed contract says by 90 days then it should be there in 90 days or less. Any delays to that contract should have been made clear to you prior to the 90 day mark either verbally or in writing. I'm in the military so if it's not in writing it never happened. Contracts are legally binding. The choice you have to make is how bad do you want the car? So many variables and possible responses by the dealership that its hard to say what will happen.

Personally if I ordered a car and it wasnt delivered on time and there was no notification and i had gone through everything you have told us ( which btw, i take with a grain of salt. There is always three sides to every story. yours, theirs, and the truth which is usually somewhere in the middle ) the dealership would have to work very hard to keep me as a customer.

Everything I told you is 100% true and exactly what happened.

Anyway, today went easier than I thought it would. As soon as they saw me they told me the vin number is available and gave it to me.

The problem? "Its almost at Vancouver and will take another 2 weeks or so to reach Toronto".

Nothing I can do but wait, at least I got the VIN number so the car is sorta locked up for me.

mattleegee 05-27-2013 05:13 PM

Ask for rental reimbursement every day after day 90
maybe move things along quicker?
now nissan has 0% financing and other deals, maybe you can score a better deal now???

Z eliminator 05-27-2013 06:01 PM

Who is the dealer ?

good that you have the vin #, now just wait that's all. things like this happen. don't listen to other people who are egging you on to push the issue, you wont win any friends and could ruin your future relationship with this dealer. you did get a good price......so just sit tight.

Easy comps for dealership: paint protection(clear bra) and tint. Good luck. :tiphat:

ZFLASH 05-27-2013 11:14 PM

Its simple: the dealer regrets agreeing to the negotiated price and is finding a way to back out. They are probably not making anything. What was the OTD price if you dont mind me asking?

took me 4 months to receive the roadster, also special order from Japan.

However, I got the VIN number about a 2 months after.

The "no-VIN on special order" is a complete BS though.

The thing is:

When you place the order at the dealership, the dealer cannot place the order right away to the factory in Japan.

The don't send single order to Japan.

Instead, they group all the special orders together and place them at certain date each month.

So, depends the timing, if you are lucky then they place the order the next day, otherwise they won't place the order til another 2 to 3 weeks.

After the factory in Japan received the order, they won't process it right away too, thus there's another wait..

After the car arrived Vancouver, it will take about 3 weeks to arrive Toronto, they transfer the inventory by train.

BTW, care to tell us which dealership in Toronto are you dealing with?

Good Luck :tiphat:

Amuse370z 05-28-2013 02:12 AM

I don't want to mention the dealer because I don't want to burn any bridges, if you're really curious, feel free to PM me.

In Canada, the Z is more of a $50k car than a $30k car.

So they told you the Z has arrived Vancouver, right?

You should have it in about 3 weeks time then...

true, after tax and everything, it's almost 50k for the coupe and 56k for the roadster.

Hope to meet you up later this season

We have cruise and meet all the time.
