Move under idle power only - 6mt?

Does anyone else ever creep along under only idle power in 1st gear?

Just found out I could do this a few weeks ago and it makes stop/go traffic a lot easier. The throttle tip-in is a little jerky at very low speeds (< 5 mph), and I hated always clutching in and out when creeping along. Then I discovered that if you're going really slow, you can just let the clutch out in 1st gear, and the idle power will keep the car inching forward at about 2 or 3 mph. Only works on level ground, and very small upgrades.

Just curious if I'm the only one.

kenchan 05-23-2013 02:21 PM

i only drive MT cars and in bumper to bumper, i drive idle frequently.

Magic Bus 05-23-2013 02:25 PM

Nope

zeeder 05-23-2013 02:25 PM

I definitely do this when the occasion calls for it. I found this trick many years ago in my '95 Miata!

kenchan 05-23-2013 02:27 PM

i honestly think MT is less fatiguing vs AT in congestion. i bet most folks that think otherwise dont know how to drive MT. lol

Vaughanabe13 05-23-2013 02:42 PM

This doesn't work for me unless I'm on a slight down grade that lasts for a while. Seems like it would be tricky to do that without stalling the car if you're in an area where the grade is changing slowly.

Yes, regularly. It's all about torque, and we've got barely enough to do this. I've driven some torque monsters that can get into first gear on an incline and creep up it without touching the gas pedal (slowly let out the clutch - better not be anyone behind you :icon17:).

:iagree: x infinity

I was once told (or maybe just overheard) that if you can't get your car rolling w/o using the gas pedal, then you don't know how to drive manual properly. :ugh2:

So I taught myself that "technique" (wasn't hard).

If I could use it in the traffic we have here, I probably would, but it's so stop and go (like 5mph to 40mph back to 5mph) that it's useless to idle through. :shakes head:

Chuck33079 05-23-2013 02:58 PM

It's really tough with a lightweight flywheel and aftermarket clutch.

That's right... Coz I don't see people here ever delivering tofu so they won't understand. Coffee is more appropriated.:rofl2:

:icon18: You'd be pulled over. Plus who wants to waste even a drip of beer.;)

stan618 05-23-2013 08:01 PM

all the time, also useful for creeping in those last inches in a tight garage. it's a sign of having learned the clutch :)

dP3NGU1N 05-23-2013 08:10 PM

This is usually what I do to find the engagement point on a new car. Let out the clutch slowly with zero throttle.

kfull 05-23-2013 08:37 PM

Yea I do this a lot. The worst is when traffic is moving just barely slower than that idle speed, then it's on and off the clutch constantly

:iagree: once i got used to the engagement point on my last Z i could get it to go up an incline in traffic without stalling or using the gas pedal, 100x easier on the brakes too

mayday813 05-23-2013 10:12 PM

Have used this technique in congested traffic for many years in various manual transmission vehicles I've owned Works best with those engines with sequential fuel injection, other type of fuel injection results in jerky vehicle movement in low speed no throttle operation
.

Cbtech 05-24-2013 12:20 AM

that is how I teach people to drive stick shift in a car other than my z :) that saves a burned out clutch from someone revving the motor until the clutch catches. Wait for the clutch to engage, start rolling, press the gas.

I have an 07 rabbit that I use as a commuter car and I have gotten it to the point I can make almost a complete stop without stalling.

sent via my wrist watch calculator

Grindkiezer 05-24-2013 01:45 AM

I do this usually when reversing into parking spots or just trying to maneuver my car in small areas

It's not if you know how to drive manual or not, some cars just can't do it. I tried in my 93 civic and it didn't work lool, the Z works no problem though as well as my 94 integra.

chrischhorn 05-24-2013 03:55 AM

I take off all the time without throttle. It's fun especially when people ride your *** and when you got that big *** truck behind you.

b15 05-24-2013 07:09 AM

I do this too. Sometimes ill roll in 2nd at idle if traffic is creeping along a little faster.

Chteelers 05-24-2013 07:18 AM

Didn't think about trying it in 2nd. I'll have to give that a go.

Cool lots of people do this. My last cars didn't have enough torque to pull this off.

Chteelers 05-24-2013 07:20 AM

On a related note, does anyone accidentally let the clutch out at a stoplight thinking you were in neutral, but were really still in 1st? LURCH, stall, start button, facepalm.

b15 05-24-2013 07:25 AM

Not at the light. I did once after first getting my car and starting it. Forgot I parked it in gear and booom....stall. luckily nothing was nearby so the only damage done was my pride lol. Now I'm pretty OCD about checking before letting out the clutch

did that on my first service visit to the nissan dealer for oil change, wasnt expecting service technician kid to leave the car in gear on level ground as i usually dont put it in gear when parked unless im on an incline. Started up, let out clutch and boom, stalled right there in the service bay with about a dozen people watching my car lol. so embarassing, but at the same time i was just thinking...f-ing service technician, why the hell would you do that?

kenchan 05-24-2013 08:23 AM

My cars are aways in gear while parked...

Always in gear when parked, no matter where!

Not yet... But I had one time trying to reverse the car. Turned my head, clutch in, put in the "reverse" gear
( Click to show/hide )
was the 6th gear indeed:rofl2:
, clutch out, car went to the opposite direction as I expected, hit my face to the back of the seat, car stalled, half facepalm half faceblue.:shakes head:

I did this twice the first month I had my car.

:shakes head: I thought I had pushed down hard enough of the gearshift. Obviously not.

First time, no one around, no one in the car.
Second time, giving my buddies wife a ride to where ever we were going to eat and stalled it in the parking lot. :o
