Front License Plate Cosmetic Interference

Happy Friday everyone! The other day I was driving to work (a 50 mi drive) and I just wondered how many other cars had their front license plate on. It is a state law here in CT. I have mine on but I know my Z would look sooooooo much better with it off. Anyway, I was amazed at how many other cars/trucks did not have there front license plate on. It was pretty much 50%. Hey..if that many other people don't have it and get away with it, why am I taking away from the looks of my Z just to obey some obviously unenforced law. What's your opinion ?

m4a1mustang 04-12-2013 01:11 PM

Do it 'til you get pulled over for it I suppose.

That said, I don't want to do anything that would give an officer a chance to pull me over and try to dig for more.

Mandingo 04-12-2013 01:48 PM

I'm not sure how strictly the LP law is enforced there. I've driven in Dallas county without a front plate for 12 years and never got pulled over. I leave it off because the fix-it ticket for front plates is easy to deal with.

I have a Stillen LP bracket for when I go on road trips though. Cops in smaller towns will definitely pull you over.

Edit: About 1/3 of cars in my area drive without a front plate

:iagree:

Well I guess that if they want to pull you over they do it anyway :ugh2:

I don't really mind the look offset with the stillen bracket. I hated the idea of having them on before I got this mainly because of drilling holes in the bumper. Not too much of a cosmetic interference for me as I thought. And Texas you "have to" have a front plate as well.

When I've gotten pulled over in my other vehicles they seem to always walk to the front and look right at where your plate is supposed to be! Made me think its a good idea to slap one on before I get a ticket.

i got pulled over so many times (just warnings) it got to a point it was just plain stupid and a big waste of my time.

i run front plates. it doesnt look that bad imho. just get a nice frame for it.

silentnightz 04-12-2013 03:16 PM

I don't mind it either even though I do agree it looks better with out it. I've considered putting the plate up against the windshield but I heard cops here would still give me a ticket since it's "Not clearly visible" I bought a basic matte black stainless steel slim frame for the front and back.

SS_Firehawk 04-12-2013 03:17 PM

Yeah, mine isn't mounted here in Vegas. They don't care here unless you are being rude and they are looking to fill the ticket with violations.

Looks like my Z brethren have spoken. Looks like I'll leave it and get a nice frame for it. Good idea Ken!

I'm so glad we're not required to run front plates.

If I lived somewhere that it was required, I still wouldn't do it. (Yeah, I'm a rebel :icon23:)

Pfft, I'm almost to retirement age!! :icon17:

Yeah, I would probably get tired of being pulled over for it quickly.

:icon17: Everyone thinks I'm under 18yo. :ugh:

I hope it lasts and I'm in my 20's when I'm 40-50.

AZ used to ship two plates to us, but only requires one to be on the car. When I went to the DMV for my Z they only pulled one out and gave it to me, so maybe they've changed things and decided to cut a few costs (yet still charge exorbitant prices for tags ).

I used this DIY and went the sho-n-go route...

Hm, I could use that for my rear and the speed camera's (or when I rob a bank :ugh2:). :icon17: jk

8 months later I'm still running dealer plates..... And no front plate. =P

Mrmaasta 04-12-2013 06:17 PM

Alberta, no front plates

ElVee 04-12-2013 07:55 PM

Strange, I was just researching the forums on just this topic. Here's my notes/ideas:

For actually using a front plate, there are plenty opinions. Some cops won't bother, some will. Some don't want the extra reason to be pulled over, others will just pay the fine as a non-moving violation. Some get a retractable plate, which looks fun and gets the plate centered, which I prefer.

Personally, I'll likely just get the tow hook and replace the hook with a license plate mount and keep it in the trunk or use as needed. Maybe someday get a centered retractable one.

I used the Stillen bracket and liked it. Unfortunately I can't use it any more (no crash bar) and I don't have room for the Show-n-go (intercooler). This is leaving me to find another option.

I have a GTM stage 1 kit going on now. You're correct that you cant mount a hideaway btwn the fangs with an intercooler. However, we were able to keep the show-n-go by using the first DIY and locating all the way underneath, required some further thought as I also have a front splitter now. Ill post pics once its back from the shop.

I look forward to seeing your set-up. I was thinking along the same lines but figured I would end up tearing it off. I'm lowered on Swifts, and have a Mines front lip. I'll have another look at things once I get my car back together.

Does anyone have information on the heat rejection capacity degradation with these front plate locations?

jofro6 04-13-2013 01:40 PM

Im in Ny where front plates are mandatory as well. I have never had a front plate on my cars since I was in HS, and i cant remember a single time that i was pulled over specifically for that reason. And when Ive been pulled for other things like speeding or whatever they have very rarely brought up my lack of plate (same thing for my illegally dark window tint). And i always use the same reason when they ask why... One of the screws fell out and i didnt want it dangling there while i got a new one, and i always just keep the plate in the trunk. 13 years of driving so far and never a front plate ticket, knock on wood.

i say get rid of it :)

Bucketlist2012 04-13-2013 04:34 PM

I don't run front plates...

I am at retirement age and if they pull me over they will be bored if they "dig for more"..

If they pull me over for speeding, well then i deserve it, but if they pull me over for no front plate ? They are just bored...

When I was stationed in NY, (I had NY plates) I had my front plate taped to the inside of front windshield on the passenger side. I had an Evo at the time and the front plate would block airflow to the oil cooler. Even when I moved to the south (not because I wanted to) I still had it the same way for a few months and never got pulled over for that.

I'm also eligible for the Senior Citizen's Discount at Denny's. I have not had a front plate on any of my cars since 1982. Once I received a fix it ticket by a weasel cop that had another car pulled over already for speeding in a school zone. He saw me coming down the street at about 20 MPH, stepped out into the street and motioned me to the curb to wait while he wrote up someone who deserved it. One other time a motorcycle officer saw me about a block from home, and followed me until I pulled into the driveway. He gave me a warning which I immediately and thereafter ignored.
But I don't drive like a douchebag or barely post-pubescent ricer and give cops a reason to hassle me either so I'm not going to worry about it.
