Car and Driver's Cars Worth Waiting For: 2016 Z
|
Looks great, but it's obviously only a concept image.
|
looks like a honda. which is fine.. i guess. i own 2 nissans, 2 hondas.
|
Liking the design and peaked my interest.
|
hmmm, me thinks i want one to add along side my 370Z when i get it if all the things in the article hold true...especially that design, looks pretty sexy at least to me
|
is that the Honda Crz?
turbocharged 4 is kind of a bummer |
yah, that's wat i waz thinking 2...
|
Obviously too soon to judge, but going off that design and what they are guessing, I am not a fan.
Not a bold enough step forward. |
I was hoping for a boosted v6. When they say at least 350hp I hope they mean it can be closer to 400hp by the time 2016 drops.
Shouldn't it be the Q60 platform? The Q50 is the sedan. |
not a fan. looks like a honda civic. LAME!
|
If it doesnt have atleast 400hp there's no way it will be able to compete because by then there's no telling what the stangs and camaro will be up too....
|
Nope/
This article has about as much credibility as I do. Doesn't really match Nissan's design language. The lines are all over the place. It's too 'chopped together. |
Even though it's just a concept, I do not like that design at all (the front looks too tall). Current design looks much better. Oh well, let's see when the actual thing is released.
|
The render is just speculation.
I was hoping for something more revolutionary rather than evolutionary, but I guess let's see what ends up coming out. |
do not like the front end...
agree with most, they have to get the power up..... |
I thought people would be more happy to hear the news about not downsizing the engine.

I wish they weren't waiting for 2016 MY.
|
LOL, this must be deja vu. I'm pretty sure just a month or two ago, there was a thread about what the Z might be. I'm pretty sure I said VQ with direct injection and same front midship platform. Estimates of 350hp are low to me, but this really isn't ground breaking. I even stated they didn't have a smaller platform to build on, a suitable smaller engine to turbo, and they would use aluminum to reduce weight. About the only thing I see here that may be news is the 2016 launch date. Hate to say it (not really) but I told you so.
|
I had thought that Nissan was divorcing the Z from the G/Q (lol) platform-wise.
This rendering may prove to be very close to what we see. The side profile is right in line with the silhouette we saw in the Jay Leno video. The front end in the rendering pulls from current concepts Nissan has debuted, and it's interested to see that this render is pulling from Nissan's design language they have implemented with the Pathfinder. It's also interesting to see that it is somewhat similar to Mazda's design language in the new CX-5, 6, and the 3 rendering I've seen (the headlights blending into the grill with the body lines). Like the use of the G IPL wheels for the render. However, I hope they're not at all used in any form. I will wait patiently. After I offload mine, 18 months should be enough time for me to rebound and purchanse another fun car, and then I can decide on a 2014 Nismo or this little bad boy. Hopefully they do the powertrain right. I would really like to see 400HP, though for that car it may be overkill. |
I will also call it now - there will be both a 240Z and a 370Z.
|
one thing people didnt take notice of is they mention it using a VQ engine, but dont say which one. i'm betting to solve the common noise issues with the 3.7 they are going to go back to the VQ35 and add direct injection to it to get to that 350HP mark and solve some of the engine noise issues that people seem to complain about alot.
|
I don't see them reducing displacement, but I do see a revised valvetrain, which is the cause of many of the woes of the current engine (oil temps, high end coarseness).
|
I can tell you now that if it's ~350hp and based on the Q50 platform... it's going to be a disappointment. Certainly won't keep up with any of the other performance cars in its class with those specs. I'm hoping for more.
|
IMHO, the Q50 is a fail and I don't even need to see it in person or drive it. I wanted so much more for that car. I only envision myself driving one if:
a) I'm above age 60 and still a Nissan enthusiast (becoming increasingly unlikely) c) it's the last car I buy before I'm sent off to a retirement home. |
Performance wise, Nissan basically has 2 options for the next Z:
1) Move it towards the BRZ (lighter chasis, respectable power to weight, more "tossable") 2) Move it towards the 5.0, ect. (about the same weight, lots more power probably through TT to make it more mod friendly from the factory) What it CANNOT do is give us 370z 2.0. |
Let me have the newest Z for a couple of years longer...
|
It's hideous, looks like a fugly Accura. Forget the DI engine, still not proven to be trouble free technology. How about the 350 HP Nismo engine, pare about 300 lbs off, add some soundproofing so it's not so damn loud inside and offer all leather instead of cheezy alcatara and leather ? Doesn't need much else to remain a world class Sports & GT.
|
Don't like it either.. I hate that they're getting rid of the VQ. They should be upgrading to a turbo VQ, not downgrading..
The design is eh.. Nothing really special |

I don't think the rendering shown really has anything to do with it. The main gist of the article, is same (similar) underpinnings, new different body.
|
Honestly i think its a shame the VQ is still in play. Its time to move on to something new.
|
i guess im the only one that sees alot of the original 240Z body lines in the concept sketch that they have there...whereas the current Z has a few cues to the original 240Z this concept sketch has alot more of the actual body lines of the 240Z. long front hood, short but sloping rear deck and the roof line even looks more like a 240Z then the current Z does even though the current Z is quite the looker in its own right.

Pick if you want to drop weight or make it quiet because soundproofing is heavy. |
Looks soft!

Since I'm not an engine guy, I'll just critique on the concept design.
I would think that they should go in the similar route Lamborghini did with their Aventador. The previous Lambo had curves, but the Aventador has a sharp hi-tech look to it. The next Nissan 370 design should be a more hi-tech version of the 300Z. I'm just really diggin the Aventador design and want an affordable version, :p . |
Anyone else concerned we have to wait until 2016 (mid-late 2015) for the next Z? The Z is already falling behind and by then the Z will be ancient with 332hp. I mean the next gent mustang and Camaro aren't too far off. I just don't see what Nissan could do for the 2014 and 2015 models to try to bring in new buyers. The 2013 re-fresh didn't exactly win over a lot of people, especially with no power increase.
I'm afraid unless Nissan gives us a concept sooner rather than later I'll probably jump ship for the first time in a long time to the new Vette. This coming from a 280z, 300zx, and 2 time 370z owner. I've owned Z's since I was 17 and plan to keep my 280z and 300zx forever; and as much as I love my 370z I'm chomping at the bit for something newer and more powerful. 2016 is a long time away |
I hope Toyota, Honda, and Mazda start making sports cars again that way Nissan will have to beef up the Z series
