Sometimes it's a matter of what the dealer has in stock and will "wheel and deal" with, than have to pull something from another dealer (or order from Nissan) and won't give any sort of deal.

With something like a Mustang GT - it'd be easy enough to get what you want by telling the dealer to STFU and haul it in and wait a few days while they pull it from another dealer lot, and they might drop it off MSRP for you since they are a dime a dozen (relatively speaking)...

Reasons to get an 7At: Clutch and clucth assembly is not covered warrantee. If you end up burning your cluth by accident, you will end up forking out some serious $$ to replace it. while a 7At is covered by the warrantee and in case of problems, it is replaceable with no cost to you.
Reason to get a 6MT: Power with a 7AT is rated about 30% less than in a 6MT.
Does any of this make sense to any of you? I know I wasnt convinced.

7AT is quicker in the 1/4 mile and 0-60.

You don't get that by having 30% less being put on the ground. :)

I just think people take it to seriously. It is just a car, and everyone should just get what they like no matter what others think. I think the auto gearbox/interface of the interior looks girly, and out of place. That is my opinion. Take it how you will, but buy what makes you happy.

There isn't any excuse for insulting people whether you are talking about cars or anything else.

Saying you don't like and didn't buy an AT because you think the "gearbox/interface of the interior looks girly" is not an insult, wrong maybe but not an insult. :)

However, telling people they bought ATs because they "aren't enough of an enthusiast" is insulting to anybody who has an AT.

I guess, I just didnt take that comment as serious as some are I guess. Enthusiast is such a broad term anyway. I wold just hope that everyone test drives both and makes an informed decision for themselves.

So I don't see how the 6MT keeps you any less bored, unless you get excited by constantly slipping your clutch in and out of gear at low speed, gently wearing it out with every press.

The "and this is my first manual car" is telling too. Come back and tell us what you think after a few more years in that stop and go traffic. My last car was a 6MT, I drove it for 10 years, and most of that time I was commuting in Houston. At the beginning I made all kinds of justifications about how the 6MT was worth it, but by the end I was ready to throw in the towel. Most of my driving miles on that car were spent slipping the clutch in 5mph traffic, and it's hard to justify that for the 10% of the time when you get to open it up on a weekend cruise.

I don't even commute now because I work from home, but I still went with the 7AT because quite frankly it's the most kick-*** automatic I've ever driven, and Houston still has traffic that I occasionally have to wade through. 7 gears, a lower-geared 1st gear than your 6mt, and one less pedal to worry about, it's a win for me. I stay in M-mode all the time, and for all practical (and many not-so-practical) purposes it's basically like driving a manual without ever having to worry about the clutch.

"But, but, if you're not using a clutch, you're not a real driver..."

Yeah and if you're not rev-matching for yourself with a perfect heel-toe technique you're not either, so you always turn off your 6MT's SRM system right?... right?......

sorry i didnt clarify the z is my first manual car i own been driving manual since i was 12(no age laws in the philippines-well at least back when i was a kid)
i love driving stick so i never get bored, traffic or no traffic
the only reason i have AT in the pass is because the cars ive had where eithier had me downs from my parents or it was a commnity car meaning i had to share with other people who didnt drive MT

so when i finally decided on the z(which is all mine lol) i said to myself MT or bust

anywho i am not saying you shouldnt get AT

the point i was trying to prove was get what you know you would enjoy
i know 10 yrs from now you would still not hear me complain about driving MT in traffic :D

cant tell others future but i can tell mine
i dont know why its so hard to understand that i will never get tired of driving manual
like what i said been driving since 12 and im 31 now so do the math

XwChriswX 07-18-2009 01:32 AM

My biggest question concerning the difference between AT or MT has been from my hopes to make it (maybe not the most super modded out there because my wallet can't keep up with my HP goals lol) a decent performance vehicle. In which I would really like to put a turbo kit on it and do all of the normal things people would do... However, again those people (no names) who think MT is the be all end all of performance, would shun anyone rolling up in an TT'd AT. Am I wrong for thinking having an automatic car with a high HP output isn't a bad thing? And unless your across the strip from John Force, I can't imagine anyone being able to keep up with the shift times of an auto right? Cause isn't that the main drawback of a turbo is lag? So taking your foot off the gas, clutch, back on the gas... as short as that difference maybe, could effect the outcome of a race right?

Forgive me if these comments are noted in another section, just this was the one I was reading right now and didn't wanna derail my train of thought to search for that one lol.

Not hard to understand...it was a joke.

Moving on, come back in 20 or 30 years and then tell us how you feel about manuals in a daily driver (assuming we are still allowed individual vehicles that even have anything resembling performance at that point).

ZCarMan 07-18-2009 10:55 AM

I'm old school. Sports cars, to be driven in manual. This is my personal opinion and I acknowledge others have theirs. However, you should drive a car that you own because it makes you smile when you are in it. If you are in an automatic with those paddle shifters and you enjoy it and it makes you smile when you drive it, then thats it for you. If you enjoy shifting the gears and feeling the car respond when you shift and having the control over it, go for the manual. Keep in mind for me my 370Z is not my everday commuter car. My commuter is a five speed manual and although I hate it when I'm in stop and go rush hour, I still enjoy the feeling when I drive a manual for my own personal reasons. In the end game, its what makes you enjoy getting into the car each time you drive.

I personally think that that comment is eclipsed by the fact that most dragsters are automatics. In fact, one of the fastest (because I'm not sure if the car still holds the record) drag cars in the world is Titan Motorsports' Toyota Supra and lo and behold it has a TH400 (if I'm not mistaken) automatic transmission right from the guts of a Buick GN.

How on earth would this thread make you decide? I dont even understand how its a hard choice. Most people know if they want a manual or an auto and if they dont, they drive them and then decide.

I am already torn between the two. I know the upsides and downsides to both transmissions. This thread is not making me decide...... This thread is causing the inner voices and 'camps' to battle within.

I have my reasons for wanting an MT, but I can counter them with reasons I want the AT. I keep reading the back and forth in this thread and neither voice within is silent; they are louder.

I hope that helps answer your question. If not, then I can explain it in no other way. Sorry.

When I was looking at possible sports cars to purchase, I used the following criteria..... If an automatic was available, I would get it. If the car was not offered with AT, I would be fine with a MT. The Viper, Honda S2000, and Lotus Exige were the MT candidates. The Corvette, BMW Z4, and The 370Z were the AT cars I looked at. The way I narrowed down the choices was.... Viper (too impractical) .... Honda ( only coupe had removable hardtop and no soft top)...Lotus (no dealer within a reasonable distance)...Corvette (too common)....BMW ( not enough bang for the buck) .... 370Z ( best fit my requirements, which was a sports car coupe).

AK370Z 07-19-2009 01:17 AM

Just because someone doesn't drive a 6MT, he/she is not an enthusiast??? What kind of response is this? The 7 speed automatic with rev matching downshifts and 6 speed gearbox with SRM - are both very fun to drive. There's no right or wrong decision. People simply buy the transmission they are comfortable with. It's all about enjoying driving your car. I have locked every 6MT vs Auto threads. Please keep it civil or this will get locked as well.
