Navigation Question!

I am considering having Navigation installed in my Z. It's the one thing that I miss not having. I used to have an Altima with factory nav and really liked the unit. Any thoughts as to having a Nissan installed nav unit vs an aftermarket install and what I can expect to pay would be helpful. Thanks guys!

A factory nav unit install would run you like $5000, or something moronically close to it

Research and buy yourself a nice head unit and have that installed

Having the factory nav put in afterwards really is not possible.
Mainly because you have to rewire the A/C controls and box, many of the components are just expensive for no reason (the screen is 1k for a 7" screen).

Don't even bother, install an iPad mini or buy a portable GPS.

Ya too pricey after the fact, the factory Nav, although I don't use it much is pretty slick and has other car monitoring features.

Sure you could find some decent aftermarket ones...

Has anyone perfected the ipad mini setup in the Z yet? Would look sweet in the upper cubby area....

I don't think YET, but there are droid setups that are 10 times nicer, and as much as I like the iPads ease of use... The droid is better because of one app... Torque... Google it to see the awesomeness of the app

I use Torque and the track/video add-on with my ViewSonic G-tab. Torque full ($5.99) + ELM Bluetooth OBD2 reader ($14.99) and I've never made a smarter purchase.

As for Navi, get an aftermarket, IMO. Do it with a stereo upgrade and improve your car 2x as much for ~3/4 the cost of doing both independently.

:tiphat:

You can buy a Garmin GPS Bluetooth thingy and then use the tablet for GPS too without using data. My buddy bought one off eBay from china for $30, free app and he uses it in his Mustang on his iPad

Waste of money. Use your Iphone or smart phone.

Also, text while you drive and open a newspaper to read! Hands on the wheel, son! :roflpuke2:

Nice to have a powered nav up and running since the beginning of trip that you don't have to orient in your hands, slide to unlock, and input a pin/gesture to access. Some smartphones, when they lock, need to update location/map-images since before it locked. So, it may take an additional few moments to see that street you needed to turn down, two-three blocks ago, while you were fiddling with your phone. :stirthepot:

But, if you don't plan on upgrading stereo, and don't want to mount a Garmin, and hate folding paper maps, the phone is an alternative.

I was looking into this awhile back... i found a few oem nav units on ebay... but i went with a garmin. Free updates for life. Its portable. And hides in my cubby perfectly. And it saved a hell alot of money.

CDepp 12-30-2012 10:31 AM

Yup this.

If you didn't opt for it when you bought it, don't work backwards now.

That be the most stupid thing, and probably not possible. If it is possible, probably cost you more than you selling the car and adding money to just buy one with navi.

Get a top of line garmin and be happy
