Karma for a racer

So my wife and I were coming back from the grocery store, perfect day in L.A.

I'm driving along and an SL 550 comes up right alongside and matches speed (going about 20 due to a car just turning in front of me), then revs their engine at us. Now I don't street race, and I was about 1/4 mile from the street I live on, but I gave it some gas and then let off and coasted when I hit 35 (posted limit).

These douches tear off, doing 65-70mph... and right as they are getting up to my street, slam on the breaks and hit their hazards briefly.... I quickly realize it was due to the a cop pulling up to the intersection from my street, and he promptly flipped his lights on and pulled them over.

:owned:

I just turned and drove home, laughing the whole way.

k20z3 07-05-2009 07:45 PM

haha sick :)

GreenJalapeno 07-05-2009 08:14 PM

LOL close to the scenario i experienced today.

I was driving on the 110, and some fucker in a riced out maxima zooms past me, cutting into my lane. Around 8-10 minutes into the drive, I see him pulled over on the right, bent over his car being cuffed. 0.o lol my friends were laughing their asses off

BanningZ 07-05-2009 08:14 PM

Justice for idiots.

They can take your car for street racing, its like handing the police department a 30-40K check because you floored it while getting groceries.

SMJane_Again 07-05-2009 09:15 PM

Very similar thing happened to me as well! I was headed south on I-25 toward Denver and a guy in a lifted 4x4 goes ripping by me like I'm standing still. I'm going a little over 75 in a 75, he HAD to be going at least 100. And just when I'm about to start a rant to my wife along the lines of 'why do these d-bags never get pulled over', I see action in the median. An un-marked cruiser brakes hard out of the north bound passing lane, crosses over, waits for a pocket in the traffic, and goes roaring by us, lights blazing! The truck heads for the first exit it sees, but the trooper's too smart for that, makes the off ramp and as I go under the overpass I see the truck completely pulled over. Genius was doing 25+ over on MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND, which has got to be the most patrolled weekend in the year. What possesses someone to do that, exactly? Is it really worth the risk to arrive somewhere 10 minutes before someone going about 5 over would????

S.

gnarf 07-05-2009 09:34 PM

I went on a different approach...some old clk driver with his top down was tailing my *** in a 40mph zone...i take the onramp to go onto the high way..he still tails me...i step on the gas aggressively and he becomes a tiny little spec in my rearview mirror..i love our VQ37's!!!

g96818 07-05-2009 10:44 PM

Haha, reading this reminded me of this incident where i was sitting in traffic and this pickup behind me was too impatient so he hopped the curb/medium to try to pass on the onramp next to us. in the process he cut off a biker cop (riding in the shoulder lane, go figure) by literally a foot and was pulled over. his gf and buddy were laughing their asses off.

370Z Purist 07-06-2009 01:44 AM

All these stories, very satisfying.

Mine is simple too. Mustang revs at me (really man... come on, it's not even the GT), then he shoots off the red light line (I goaded him, revved to 2.5k, car is pretty loud still), and I just start normally. He shoots off and gets caught by a cop just sitting there. Obviously the "rush" of a race made him blind to the arm of the law just waving around in his face. Very satisfying because the cop is just standing there, arms akimbo, and the driver is just "...dammit..."

tstrick9 07-06-2009 01:11 PM

The Chargers the police have now are very impressive, i think you'd actually have a really hard time trying to elude one.

Do police departments actually dish out money and modify their cars?
No right? I've seen chargers in richer towns and they look pretty badass.
I'd like to race one. :stirthepot:

They run nitrous systems. Chargers are pretty damn slow, but when the police get a hold of them, they go pretty damn fast. In general they're modified to catch anything traveling up to around 160 (I think all US cars are limited at 155).

Police cars and mods...

I would have to say that the majority of police cars not modified. For the simple reason that one cannot escape the eye in the sky. Why spend money modifying when you can call in a chopper? LAPD for instance does not modify their vehicles anymore.

Do what? Cant say i have ever seen a cop car purging out before a police pursuit?! lmao, and here i thought it was just HEMI power!

370Z Purist 07-06-2009 03:56 PM

Some places have Vettes for high speed pursuits. It's the same way with running NOX, they only have one or two cars, and not all departments have them.

theDreamer 07-06-2009 04:02 PM

Houston has been picking up a few chargers for their departments but only see a few a month. They are not modified by the police, but come modified from the factory. The engine is slightly tuned above normal, but the car itself is lighter with less gear in it (stock), of course with added weight of guns and armor it can weight more.

gnarf 07-06-2009 04:39 PM

1 of the things to do before I die....attend a high speed car chase... ;)

That trick NEVER gets old. LOL!

kannibul 07-06-2009 04:47 PM

Speaking of state troopers, I think this guy probably got away, no thanks to morons who can't figure out there's a cop behind them...and that they need to move over.

I'm on my bike, going 75 in a 65, I see this car...looks like a mid-90's buick, flying up towards me, I move over...and he goes by doing at least 95-100+...

I think, man, what a moron, where's a cop...then I see lights cresting over behind me, and state trooper flies by.

He gets caught behind a truck pulling a horse trailer, who for a 1/2 mile blocks the cop. I'm surprised he didn't pull that guy over...lol...

But, I think by that point, moron made a quick exit and would have escaped....at least, that's what I would have done...

:shakes head: Not that I endorse, encourage, condone, support, or have EVER attempted or would/will ever attempt to elude the police, BUT it is very unlikely they would be able to catch me.

I'm dyno tuned on a DD dyno at 109 RWHP on a 400lb bike! :woot: 0-60 time is roughly under 3 seconds and 60-120 is even faster!!! I'd be long gone before they got their car our of P(park).

I couldn't out run the motorola though... :driving:

imag 07-07-2009 08:02 PM

Bikes are a different story. Your chance of getting away is over 50% on a bike *if* you know what you're doing.

The downside is rough though. I have a friend who got caught after 3 hours. They blocked all his exit paths and finally nabbed him near his bike. Even though he wasn't riding, the leathers were enough.

Togo 07-07-2009 08:11 PM

Yeah my room mate in college led virgina police on a 2 hour long pursuit until he ran out of gas. Lets just say you didn't return to our school the following year. No airline will hire you to fly for them after that. It ended his career!

Unless you're in OK and the cop counters with a bike of his own:

*EDIT*- It appears it is OK that has them

I will say to the guy with the bike who thinks he could outrun the popo...i have seen the ncshp run a fleeing motorcycle off the road before, and i had a local sheriff also force one into a ditch in front of my house. So one more thing to think over before you take off is, if i they do catch up to you, what happens then!

wstar 07-08-2009 08:28 AM

You can always outrun a cop, but you can never outrun the radio.

And most police cruiser mods are geared towards endurance rather than speed (extra coolers for various fluids to survive all-day abuse/idling in the heat, suspension that can take running over curbs all the time, etc). I've never personally seen or heard of a cop car running nitrous, and it wouldn't make much sense (but I guess it's possible). Most urban departments have pretty strict rules on high-speed chases anyways, and rely more on radio support, choppers, and boxing them in with other cars ahead of the route. The idea of a tricked out police corvette trying to literally chase down a street racer is mostly fantasy-land compared to how the real thing unfolds.

It's not so much out run, but more of getaway. In all honesty, top speed run, a decent cop car (vette, camaro) might actually reel me in. I top out stock at 165MPH and with my current gearing its more like 155-160mph. But I'd make and exit and be long gone before he'd be close enough to see me take the exit.

Like I said though, I don't run, never have, never will. Too many risks to yourself and others, including the officers that follow. Running from the police is stupid IMO and like I said, you can't outrun the motorola (radio).

earwicker7 07-08-2009 07:37 PM

I accidentally led a cop across one of those plains states (I can't remember exactly which one, as it was 21 years ago). I had just bought a 1971 911 and was driving it from boarding school in Colorado Springs to Indiana. I was cruising at around 100 MPH on a stretch of highway in the middle of nowhere (REALLY in the middle of nowhere... there were no houses for miles on end). I saw some police lights in my side mirror, so I pulled over. He was acting like I was a fugitive, and I soon figured out why. He said he had been following me for almost 15 miles. It was only then that I realized (remember, I'd only had this car for a few hours) the car had no rearview mirror; apparently, it had fallen off and the previous owner had not replaced it. Combine this with the fact that I had the stereo cranked, and I had no idea that I was being chased by a cop for around 10 minutes. Thankfully, the cop cooled down once he realized that I didn't mean to lead him on a highspeed chase and only issued me a ticket.

I never paid it, so there is some plains state where I probably have a "record."

Actually, they'll put your nice $30K+ car in a gigantic vice that moves horizontally and vertically from all sides. Then your 3,300 lb. sports car looks like a 5'x5' metal square....and you will be crying a river. Hey, at least your 370's hood, doors and hatch are put to good use--aluminum soda cans.

That's why I don't street race PERIOD.

Yeah, that's what the cop tells you before they give their girlfriend a new 370Z;).

StreetSpeed 07-09-2009 05:22 AM

You can easily out run a cop on any modern 600 CC and up sportbike. You can do it twice. The third time you get caught, hire a good lawyer, get away with a measly speeding ticket, turn 23, start to grow up, and say "Man was I being an *******..." It's also much easier in a city say like, Miami, rather than upstate NY where your get away options are much more limited.

But don't try it. Unless you're an *******.

WooZ 07-09-2009 10:24 AM

Here in Cali, the CHP used to ride around in Camaros with low profile lights so you'd think nothing of them till they pulled you over.

Shunya 07-09-2009 10:26 AM

haha this reminds me of a funny story last year.
While I was driving my ex-gf home we hit this really really long red light.
I was driving in my Track Car (ITR), then a Teen(aslo a Novice driver) in a 997 Turbo stops on the lane next to me.
Gave me a look and began to rev his Porsche...
I was thinking "wow! you gotta be kiddin me kid... a Porsche picking on a Acura.." lol
anyways! he kept revving his 997 and I was trying to fool him to launch by returning him a few revs.
as the Traffic light hits green the 997 suddenly became quite...
then I realized that the kid stalled on his lil Porsche~! hahahaha!
approaching the next intersection the light turned yellow,
so i slowed down being curious to see how his face looks like.
he slowly approaches and stops at my quarter panel. lol
being a ******* I started revving my ITR. the Porsche was silenced..
hahaha this is the funniest experience i had on the streets.
