Question about the heater and A/C

So it's getting relatively brick out here in NYC at night. For the sake of my gf's comfort, I'd blast the heat at 90F on max to get the car warmed up faster. Problem is that I have test pipes so the smell of gas gets into the cabin and is a little bothersome. I notice every time I press the Recirculation button, it also turns on the A/C. If I turn off the A/C, it also changes the shutter to Fresh Air automatically every time. I don't understand why it does that and seems counterintuitive for the A/C to want to come on to cool the air when I'm trying to heat the cabin up, plus lower my MPG. What gives?

I find that annoying as well. I don't like it when my car assumes things :shakes head: I can't find a way around it though, so I've learned to live with it.

There are a few other threads I recall on this too. Let's suffice to say the heat & A/C controls on this car (and my Murano for that matter) are a fail by Nissan.
Someone else speculated that the A/C comes on with recirc to avoid fogging up the windows in such a small cabin. This doesn't explain the Murano though.
I too have learned to live with it and pretty much have to push the A/C off with every change to the controls. :shakes head:

It did the same thing in my '03 350z.
