Babying the car?

Will babying the car cause damage to motor over time? Should I redline the car or is the engine still needs broken in? Also how often should I redline the car if it needs it? My car is a 2010 with 13k miles. Thanks for any advice guys!

I put a supercharger on my car with only 300 miles on it, just drive the car and enjoy it.

red6spd 10-09-2012 08:09 PM

What?!?!?!? Save the gas and engine for the times you want to embarrass someone or have some fun.

sonic370 10-09-2012 08:57 PM

it broke in you bought it. there are times when you just have to drive it like you stole. just be careful and watch out. oh and i would leave on the vdc

Mt Tam I am 10-09-2012 09:00 PM

Break in the engine and enjoy the car. The power lies at high RPM's. Baby it for what? So you can have fun later?

JungleZ 10-09-2012 09:15 PM

babying or garaging cars rustles my jimmies. Unless you have a super modified super car or rare production car i dont even wanna hear anyone brag i have an 09 with only 20,000 on it blah blah.

I'll second that cars are made to be driven

LakeShow 10-10-2012 12:23 AM

Breaking in is the first 1,200 miles. If you take care of the car, it should be fine. Regular Fluid maintenance and Premium gas and you should be fine. The VQ motors are pretty solid and strong motors. Drive as you please.

Drive it like 'ya stole it!

Baby the maintenance (Do it when you need to). Baby the detail job(Wash it on a regular basis). But abuse the motor and drive train when need be. DRIVE IT! BE SEEN IN IT! USE IT FOR WHAT IT WAS BUILT TO DO!

ShockWave 10-10-2012 02:37 PM

I think you guys missed the point of the question. I'm asking will the car get motor issues over time if you baby the car. I'm not staying that I'm going to baby the car. If sure if you keep on relining the car it will blow up!

That's close to the number of force inducted miles on my car. :icon14:

With 13K miles your engine broke in a while back already so have at it.

Redline that baby whenever the urge hits you and the engine oil has reached proper operating temperature.

Change the oil regularly and you should be good.

I don't think it babying the car would damage anything; it would just be boring to drive.

Your car has plenty of miles and is completely broke in to drive it how ever you want. Be sure to do the normal maintenance on the car and you should be fine in most cases. I will throw one caveat out there for you that others are not sharing. The more you beat on a car the more likely it will break.

Example. Your drive train will take more strain if you do hole shots every time vs every now and then. If you do some spirited driving every now and then no big deal.

The simple point: Drive it how you want to. If you have a few repairs then just fix the car, no big deal.

^ very good advice about operating temps. Don't drive hard when your engine is cold.

If a car is not given some WOT every once in a while, you are more prone to have excessive carbon deposits on the valves and other engine parts. Heat also helps to burn off any water that may have accumulated in the oil.

OldGuy 10-10-2012 08:53 PM

I drive my car like any other---never "like I stole it," just sensibly and occasionally in spirited way. It's been perfect since its birth 3 years ago.

Luke 10-11-2012 08:09 AM

Constant redlining is only really needed in a rotary to keep it from carbon locking...... but its always fun in the Z too, i like to check my limiter still works. lol

RandyD 10-11-2012 08:16 AM

if you haven't thrown yourself back into the seat when you're accelerating from 80 - then you haven't driven it yet.

KSFastah 10-11-2012 09:16 AM

To each their own...but....

It's just a car....a mass produced car....just drive it hard and enjoy it. It's entirely likely that the Z is FAR more capable than skill level of 90% of the people driving it anyway.

09 with 18,500 here...

But I live a whopping 5mi from my office, and my wife works at the same building, so I drive maybe half the time.

On the weekends, my car only comes out of the garage if its raining and can't ride my bike.

Mine is 2009 with 10,000 miles and is not because I babied it. I do take care of the car. But I have three more cars in my house, I wish I could drivre it more. However it has been 3 times ZdayZ and survived the Dragon!

So the Z is in the garage and a pain to pull out with the car in the garage and a single driveway, plus a damn cul de sac(minimum parking).

Sorry for the late response edub, over 20k FI miles. I'm currently standing around 42k miles. The car is cursed at 40k miles. What happened to my car the past 2 weeks?
  • Drove past a neighborhood when a golf ball bounced out and hit my hood.
  • Got egged.
  • Same night I got egged the battery quit. Corrected loose ground cable and battery still wouldn't hold a charge. Got stranded again.

Not related to my car, but within the past week I went in for an emergency dental visit after chipping my molar from biting into a sausage patty. It's difficult to enjoy a cold one now. :owned:

I'm 31 in a few weeks, so hopefully being in the 30s isn't cursed either.

WTF?!

Where were you when you got egged?

I was at a party on the east side near Cypress and Pawnee. Looks like a "driveby" egging from the smearing direction and some missed hits indicated by eggs on the ground. Hit the driver side door with yolk dripping and collecting on my CF side skirts. I was pretty much washing my car around 3AM before driving home.

When I had the 350Z, the same thing happened when I was at a different party close to that area. I think it was Linden street.

Other than that, I don't recall issues anywhere else.
