Tracking and insurance/warranty
So one of the things I was thinking of doing once I get my Z was to start taking it to the track and learning how to drive better. I've never done that sort of thing before (except as a spectator).
What sorts of things should I be prepared for with respect to either the Z's warranty or my insurance? Will tracking the car instantly void either of those? How does that work? |
I'm wondering if they do stuff like Subaru did/does.
They market the STi as rally and raceable, but when people who did so brought it in for regular maintenance, etc. they would void warranties, because the computers recorded the high speeds, etc. I think something similar was happening with Mitsubishi and the Evo's. I haven't seen any posts or stories like that with regards to the Z yet though. Would be nice to hear from those that have tracked. |

I never mention to the service manager at the dealership what exactly I am doing. I need to be careful is my mentallity, do not mention the next track day coming up. Modifications are obvious.

So it's mostly a "Don't ask, don't tell" kind of thing?
|
And when you put it into the wall, you hire a flatbed to tow it outside the track *then* call your insurance agent.
No, seriously, if you're going to track it, you need special insurance (usually available at the track). Your insurance won't cover anything that happens on the track. |
Insurance varies by state and by insurer so it is best to read your policy or ask your agent. The best approach is to call it a high performance drivers education (HPDE) event with instruction. If it is any type of "competition" event your insurance and warranty are void.

When I went to track at Limerock and Lebanon valley raceway they had me sign a disclaimer as far as insurance goes they offered some on track insurance for me, but I declined, the guy there was like "You sure, you might as well sign over your car over to me" I was like dude stop gettin in my business, LOL how I drive and what I do is my responsibility you take care of inspection. :bowrofl::driving:

pie here - yeah that would suck totaling at the track and getting denied coverage. OWNED
|
Ok, so I understand the insurance, but what about the warranty? If your'e driving around a track and something fails, Nissan won't cover it because it happened at a track? Isn't it up to them to prove that the track event was what caused the failure? Or would it be up to me to prove that it wasn't? Or is it pretty much an instant "warranty void, you tracked"?
|
Your warranty is void pretty much the moment you put a wheel on the track as far as Nissan is concerned, but as others have stated it is pretty much a don't ask don't tell kind of story. At least until you start bolting in race seats, harnesses and removing carpets - at that point you're on your own regardless.

You've got to pay to play when it comes to tracking your car. This answer applies to all track questions.
|
Nissan doesn't warranty anything to begin with, makes absolutely no difference. If you want them to pay for something, it better be completely broken
