Dog in the back of your Z?

Does anyone know if the 370Z will fit a large dog (black lab) comfortably in the hatch??

The reason I ask is because I really want one BUT I take my dog around with me a lot. I've been considering more practical cars like the STI but I REALLY want a Z.

Post pics if you got'em...

I used to have a similar dog that I drove to a local dog park every weekend. The dog will almost definitely fit, the real question is whether it's a safe and/or good idea. My last car had some useless tiny rear seats, and I strapped the dog in back there with a harness that attaches to the seatbelt to keep the dog in place. Keeps them from jumping around the car and distracting you, and keeps the dog safer if you have to slam on the brakes (or if you have an accident).

You'd need to come up with something similar that hooked up to the cargo net hooks and/or the child safety seat hook thing in the rear to strap the dog down back there. Otherwise if it's a younger and/or less-calm dog it's going to try to jump up through the middle of the car into the front seat, and even if it is calm, if you slam on the brakes the dog is going to be painfully thrown into/over that metal bar behind the seats.

You can fit a medium-sized dog back there without issue but I think it's unsafe.

The safest place for the dog would probably be in the passenger seat. Just lay some towels down and get a doggie seat belt.

elpaletero 06-30-2009 10:21 AM

Yeah, I guess I could buy a seat cover and a doggy seat belt and put it on the passanger seat when I bring my dog.

And put my fiance in the hatch.....:rofl2:

My pembroke corgi loves it; it's like a doggy aquarium. People laugh when they spot him in the back. He can stand and walk around, but he has a lot less leg than a lab. Your lab should fit laying down. Just loop a strap to the cross brace to prevent the dog from flying into the cabin in an accident. The STI would be a far more friendly option though.

I got in the back of my Z with the hatch closed to take some measurements. Some people might call cruelty but if your dog just lays down back there he'll be fine.

Shade? It's going to get very hot under that glass on a sunny day.

Well I think if youa re going to put your dog in the hatch you need to at least put some padding over the support bar.

But generally I don't think it's safe to have a dog back there. In a front impact he's flying into the cabin and out the front window.

stan618 06-30-2009 03:11 PM

not a good idea, a lab is way too big, passenger seat is the only option

IDZRVIT 06-30-2009 03:12 PM

Sorry, but that's just a bad idea. But try this. Put the fiance in the hatch and drive for an hour. Open the hatch. Now put the dog in the hatch and drive for an hour. Open the hatch. Keep the one that's excited to see you!!!!;)

it costs about $20, and should solve your problems of the dog rolling around the back.

I dunno about a 370z but I remember like 3 years ago I went on a cruise and one of the guys had a 350z with a dog strapped in the trunk. We were driving on a mountain road, so I dunno if the dog liked it.

I'm looking forward to having a car that dogs are not allowed to ride in. We have a Great Dane and a Boxer; not gonna happen in a Z hatch!!

spearfish25 06-30-2009 07:01 PM

We have a 75lb great pyrennes mix. She looks like a white golden retreiver. I'd love to put her in the back, but she'd be cramped and have to be laying flat. Never gonna happen... (not to mention white hair all over my black interior)

cwj370 06-30-2009 07:25 PM

I'm pretty sure my Doberman would fit and probably wouldn't mind laying back there for a short ride. My problem would be getting the sweetheart in there without scratching my car. She is about 70 lbs and I would want to pick her up and place her in there to keep toenails away from everything. I dont think I could manage getting her up and in, not to mention getting her out safely. I am planning on her riding in the passenger seat for our trips out.

ssqpolo 06-30-2009 07:28 PM

i put my lil brother in the hatch (before the sub box)..he's 13...pretty tall. so dogs should be fine :)

elpaletero 06-30-2009 10:29 PM

grahfz, nice dog, looks like she fits pretty nicely back there.

My lab usually rides in the back seat of my prelude and generally stays back there without to much commotion. I guess my only concern would be safety in the case of a wreck. My only other concern would be her scrathing my car getting in and out of the car.

I wouldn't mind just going the way of the STI due to its practicallity and still very fun to drive but I kinda want to stay away from the boy racer cars.

grahfz 06-30-2009 11:08 PM

yeah, I don't like stuffing them back there for the obvious reasons. she pretty much just lays down until we stop moving.

The 370 just destroys 350's on the highway... and a g37S... for the money, it's really hard to even equal the 370.

My favourite part of the car is the a-arms.

elpaletero 07-01-2009 11:43 AM

I guess another couple options in place of the Z would be an e46 M3 or the e92 335.

The back seat would allow me to stuff my dog back there and still be sporty, fast, and non boy racer.

Decisions, decisions. I still have a few more months before I'd be willing to buy so I have time to make up my mind.

Ya gotta love PWCs. We have 4 of them!

I wouldn't put any animal inside a 370z.

Just think of it as a corvette. Do you see people who own corvettes driving around with a lab?

Your logic is bullet proof.

xiven 07-01-2009 04:07 PM

i'm sure its been done.

frost 07-01-2009 06:40 PM

Remove the passenger seat and let him lay there. Putting him in the back isn't worth risking your lives (yes, plural) if you get into a collision.

I hope to be able to put my 50 lb. Shepherd mix in the hatch area. Only when someone else is riding shotgun though. So far the dog has been able to ride shotgun with me.

LMAO :bowrofl: Could have saved a bunch of alimony payments if I'd been able to run this simple test 25 years ago.
