i need opinions on USED brembo or nissan sport CALIPERS !

i really dont want to spend $2500 to $3000 for the akebono BBK and even more $ for the brembo. so i was thinking of cutting the cost and buying the calipers used, but new pads/hardware/rotors.

New from Z1: Z1 Akebono Sport Brake Upgrade Package
The ability to add some options and not spend 3k.

Z11 09-10-2012 03:02 PM

thats the site i was referring to, with everything it comes to a bit over 2K, then add shipping $, and installation $, and theres your close to 3K

i dont know brakes are worth being cheap on...
you have the base brakes on a 370z? id look for a cheap pair of used and rebuild them

diddy535 09-10-2012 04:54 PM

Honestly it'd be expensive even used brembos. You're factoring in shipping, pads, line fluid for the akebonos on Z1 and saying it's 3k. Fair, but if you picked up used brembos, they'd be at least 3k for a full set, and then you still have to pay for shipping on those, plus fluid plus pads and then as you indicated, new rotors. The new akebonos will more likely always be cheaper than a brembo kit, even if it's used.

It really comes down to what you want out of your car (DD vs. tracking).

I read in another thread you started that you totaled your 350 on black ice and I noticed you live in Canada (http://www.the370z.com/nissan-370z-g...-z-winter.html). If you're going for new brakes to avoid another accident as opposed to performance I'd say go with the cheaper option (akebonos) and more importantly, get a good set of winter tires if you haven't already. But honestly if you're worried about another accident it's more to do with driving than anything else, and honestly a set of bigger brakes won't do too much.

edit: last used brembo kit I've seen on the370z, asking was $5350

The op has done his research so and is complaining about cost sooo...

I'm going out on a limb and guess this is more of a cool factor issue than anything else.

This will increase your performance on your current brakes:
Z1 370Z / G37 Brake Upgrade Package (Non-Sport Models)

this will make you look the part:

BLUE Aluminum Endless Brake Caliper Cover Kit 2pcs | eBay

You can spend around $600 and improve the brakes you have and another few $$ on fake covers or can totally fake it and ONLY get covers.

Good luck:ugh2:

Yeah sounds about right. Considering it was only brembo and not even something a little cheaper like AP or Stoptech.

ya i thought used brembos would be around 3K or so, but i was trying to look for used akebonos, im sure theres got to be someone who wants to sell, but i cant find any. new akebono (nissan sport) calipers are 1K + tax + shipping. so used should be less, and then just get new rotors, hardware, pads, fluid, shouldnt be much. and im storing my car, DD, just for looks. i spent 50K buying this brand new. so theres no way im going to cheap out and get covers. its tempting, 3K vs $30 ! just for looks. but deep down inside my car will hate me. its like giving your wife a fake diamond, or drawing a tattoo on your arm, or spit then rub on tattoo, or buying alot of cheap paint and painting your car, or using WALL PAPER AS NEW CAR PAINT AND LINES,

NOT COOL

If you like, you can just get better rotors, pads, brake lines, and fluid. That should give you better braking performance. Even if you want to switch over to Akebonos, the retrofit kit will set you back several hundred dollars so you'll still end up spending over $1k in parts.

I think the free shipping comes up once you check out. You can get it down to 1,600 on parts if you're on a budget. The infiniti is $250 less for example and you can just trim the dust shields already on the car and save another $125.

Used is fine if you can find them, but your total is going to be close to a new set unless you can get them really, really cheap. New rotors, pads shims, ss lines, etc...will run you around $600. If you can even find the calipers by themselves, they will need to be around $400-500 used. Over that and you might as well go with the Z1 set. You will likey have to pay shipping on used parts also.

You're gonna be looking at least $2k total if you hire someone to install them. What's your overall budget?

DEpointfive0 09-13-2012 03:41 PM

Try eBay, I saw a used set (4) calipers sell for $600... (Might have included used rotors too)

diddy535 09-13-2012 07:05 PM

If you're just going for looks honestly I wouldn't waste that much. There are cheaper options, like just painting your base calipers.

http://www.the370z.com/diy-section-d...-calipers.html

That would be the cheapest, just for looks. Akebonos are great and you can cut costs like Mike mentioned to make it reasonable but in reality you're looking close to 2K when it's all said and done.

omm370z 09-13-2012 10:30 PM

You just went through from Calipers to just looks :shakes head:

BBK = Big Brake Kit, are not cheap, and you cannot cheap-out on BBK.

The least expensive but good quality one are about $3k PLUS S&H and installation so you looking at about $4k altogether.

The shipping is expensive because the weight of the kit and ship to Canada usually cost between $250 to $300.

Depends on what are you looking for, if you just want to look better, I suggest you spend $3k to $4k getting new set of tires&wheels.

A set of good quality tires will improve traction thus improve braking too.

Plus, the upgrade on the style of the wheels is much obvious/noticeable than the brake-kit.

Also, I remember you have the 18inch OEM wheels, and because of that, you can only fit a 'small size' BBK with that, then what's the point of getting BBK if you can only get a small-BBK??

If you are just DD your Z and no tracking, the base brake is good enough, you might want to upgrade to better quality rotors and pads, nice and easy and cost effective.

If you want better style, use the money to get a set of 19 inch, it does a much better job than the BBK on improving the style.

Why didn't you just buy a Z thats already equipped. You're giving all this philosophy about what your car will hate but, you are going to spend about 70% or more of the complete sport pkg buying used brakes etc... Your initial path of least resistance is leading to you overpaying. The worth of the sport package is $3300 american, probably $5k canadian?? you can do the translation of currency? Seperate, this the cost of the sport pkg
Akebono Brakes = $3,700
Vicious Limited slip = $2,000
Sport Rims = $2,160
Sport Tires= $1,300
Rear spoiler =$400
Chin spoiler= $110

Grand Total= $9670

If you're not going to buy a sport pkg and want to upgrade? Be prepared to pay out. So lets calculate the sport pkg used
Akebono used $1600+
120 for lines+
250 for shytty used pads+
$80 for fluid = $1950/not including install.

used limited slip $900
used sport rims $1200
used tires 60% tread life $600
used rear spoiler $250 and possibly may need paint? up to $400
used chin spoiler= $70

Grand total= approx $5000 or more american USED.

you pay out the azz for going half-azz. you do the math.
