Should I sell my Z?

I have a 2011 370z (certified) with touring sport and nav. 6 speed with 16k miles. Carmax just offered me 30k. Should I take this? Looking at the cars for sale section it seems that these take forever to sell and at values lower than this... Also I'm wondering if I do hold on should I expect my value to drop significantly next year (>5k dollars, with about 6k more miles)?

tWeEzY 07-29-2012 03:02 PM

I'd say w/ the 2013s on their way 30k might be good since you already got 16k miles on yours. WHat you looking to get btw?

Rally Guy 07-29-2012 03:10 PM

I'm looking at moving to a e90 335i. I live in the city so I can't get the most out of sports car. Plus 400hp/400 tq with tune plus meth is freaking awesome...

Yea I hear you. I helped my buddy put on downpipes, intercooler, intakes, BOV, and Cobb stage three tune. His car really came to life. He's going to do meth next also. The downpies are a big PITA though. He has a 2009. I think that was the last year for the inline 6.

Lets start some trouble. You better do your research on these guys running just a tune with all that power because it come with a price. Those single and twin turbo BMW's are very unreliable when modded.

I've never seen a thread about a 335i with a blown motor? All cars have issues, but aside from the HPFP (which is warrantied to I think 100k) what othe issues does that car have?

Who said anything about blown motors? Just to rattle off a few issues I have read about and heard from owners themselves are, Blown Turbos or turbos failing prematurely, injector issues, and then as you mentioned the Fuel pump issues.

I know of several guys with 100K miles with no issues. But I have heard plenty of issues as you have stated.

I can say when changing out my buddies intercooler there was a lot of oil in the stock intercooler and catch can. So you know what that means. He has 33K miles on it.

Pssh... BMW's aren't reliable when they're stock. :stirthepot:

<- Puts down the haterade.

Yeah, anyway, that seems like a fair offer to me.

red6spd 07-29-2012 05:21 PM

Also doesn't BMW keep a watchful eye on any mods you do to the car?

Thechidz 07-29-2012 05:26 PM

Im actually kinda surprised carfax offered so much makes me wonder what they would offer for my 09 with 32k miles. I imagine yours is mint no scratches or anything?

buddyZ 07-29-2012 06:01 PM

get an alpine white E92

LakeShow 07-29-2012 07:13 PM

30k, that's pretty good.

Thats what I'm thinking. I was very suprised by the offer. I thought it was going to be like 26-27k. I would hate to hold on to the car for a year and have it drop like 5-6k.

Wow it seems like the z market must suck other places. Here in dallas, a tour sport nav from 11 would go for about 38k. you'd get like 35k... they'd give me 32.5k for my base sport auto right now. the average price of a 11 base sport auto 36k used. sprt tour nav with auto from 11 would still sell around 41k. you'd get 38k for an auto here.

They sure do, so does Audi. When you bring it in for any work (maint, repair, warranty) ....they will read through the memory and programming with check points to see if you have exceeded the factory boost levels, how many times, what temps you were running, etc....do a checksum and all other kinds of things. Audi will then place a DT1 code into your car and FLAG IT and you won't even know it...till you make a warranty claim or try to.

if you're thinking about selling, do it now.

i dont plan on selling my Z for a while... probably not for another 5-6yrs minimum. i may end up just keeping her until she falls apart.

sounds like a plan

for me, until my kids are out of highschool im going to stay away from buying anther 2 seater as i only have limited time to drive.

but once they're in college... let the fun begin again. :p i like the exclusivity of 2 seaters.

AKI370z 07-30-2012 11:30 AM

I'd stay away from a 335i. That car is one of the most unreliable car I've owned. I would stick to all motor if it comes to BMW...

Would you mind elaborating? What in particular drove you away?

I like not having to drive groups of people around.

christian370z 07-30-2012 02:26 PM

My local dealer offered me 30k for my '10 Base plus touring with 9,000 miles, sport package wheels and spoiler, and that was without negotiating on my part. That's why I am surprised at the prices of used Zs on the forums, I used to assume those prices were what I should expect before I got the dealer's quote.

that's a good reason for sure. my G can fit 4 but has 2 recaro child seats in the back so no one at work asks me to drive them to lunch. :p

That is a good to know price quote. I have been seriously thinking of selling my car. It is an 11 base black on black sport with M6. Currently setting with 1333 miles on the odometer. It also has a 5/75000 gold prefered warranty. I just don't find the time to actually drive it that much at all.

Th3 On3 07-30-2012 09:18 PM

I wanted to sell/trade my car, I took it to a small dealer here at home and all they did was look at my car and look up the value through NADA and offered me what the website said which was 26,xxx

You can get more for the touring 32k-33. I got 29500 for my base sport with 17k on trade. You can get much more.

cossie1600 07-30-2012 09:52 PM

damn if I can get $29500 for my car, I would trade it right. Where are you guys getting these prices from? I am getting offers of 25K or something.

Th3 On3 07-30-2012 10:54 PM

Mine was from the dealer. Then again, they also have customers looking for certain color and interior combos and mine is one of them so that might factor into a higher offer price.

Evofusion 07-31-2012 04:11 PM

Mine is an 11 touring/sport with 13k mil and I would sell it in a heartbeat for 30.

If you definitely have it set in your mind that you want another car I would go for it before the prices start going down.

chris410 07-31-2012 04:49 PM

When I traded mine in on the GT500, I got 23500 for my pw touring auto (mint) that had 34k miles on it. 30k is a decent trade-in. To be honest, I was surprised I got that much, I was expecting 20 to 21k at most.

I tried to sell for around 25k with no luck but then again, I only had it for sale for a short amount of time since I had to move on the GT500 quickly.

Shotta 07-31-2012 05:42 PM

If thats what carmax is offering for cash, not against a trade in then that is very good. If they just inflated the price of whatever you were looking to buy from them to compensate then not so good.

I have been a die hard BMW fan my whole driving life (Im almost 40) I have had a E30, E36, E46 and in fact still have my old E36 that I modified and drive hard daily with just under 400,000 kms on the clock.

BUT...

I personally know a BMW top mechanic of 30 years, very good family friend plus I am good friends with 2 competing independent shops one specilizing in Dinan upgrades and the other just standard BMW and Mercedes maintenance and a coworker has a 2009 335.

All 4 people steered me away from the latest 3 series line up from BMW (latest I could afford which would have been a 2-3 year old 335), and they make all their money from modifying and servicing BMW's, they dont touch Jap cars. They said only purchase if I am getting factory certified warranty with it, otherwise be prepared to pay big $$$.

The co-worker recently had his turbos replaced for a cost of $8000.00 and his high pressure fuel pump fails on a regular basis. I have also seen nearly new 3 series in the various shops for engine sludge issues.

Im not trying to make you not get a 335 as I still have love in my heart for BMW but if you buy a 335 without warranty or plan to mod it you will need lots of cash to keep it running after that.

P.S. Thought I should add that my E36 has only been in the shop 2 times in the last 6 years, I do 100% of all service and maintenace other then what I need a lift for.

Rally Guy 08-16-2012 08:39 AM

Just to update the thread, I sold the car for 30k.

Seeing this made me pull the trigger.

2011 Nissan 370Z Touring in Columbus, OH- 8317452 at carmax.com

30K isn't a bad price IF you don't want the car anymore. Do you not want the Z?
30K isn't a steal so you won't make money selling it and buying another car imo.

If you want to get an idea of what your car will be worth next year add your annual mileage and make your car an '10 and check the value.

Basic Rule: Cars are not investments that you normally make money on. So unless your lucky any trade or sale will result in a net loss.
