What do you do when your friend backs into your Z?

Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum.

I bought my car about two months ago on Memorial Day. I LOVE my Z to death, i try not to drive it alot because I dont want to put too much mileage on it, considering i have to drive far for work (DC Metro Area). Around the time i got my car, one of my best friends from California moves over here for work also and he JUST recently bought his brand new 2012 corolla LAST WEEK.
He wasnt looking and he BACKED UP into my Z. He dented and scratched the rear passenger side bumper and chipped the plastic fasica of the rear passenger tail light, but the light still works. Can anyone tell me how much a new OEM PAINTED PG bumper would cost? And also how much a tail light fasica cover would cost (if they even sold that plastic cover)? or would i have to buy a brand new tail light?

Thank you so much.

Doesn't he have insurance? If not, one less friend and one potential murder charge.

USMCASA 07-23-2012 09:23 AM

u let insurance handle it, or if he's baller let him pay cash and buy all your drinks one evening. friendship saved

Davey 07-23-2012 09:28 AM

I would get my friend's insurance info, have an adjuster look at it, and then take my car to a body shop to get estimates, same as if anyone else ran into it.

I guess if he wants to pay cash then I'd just take it to a body shop.

Does your friend have insurance? Take it to a reputable shop, they can probably repair the bumper. As for the light, check the parts for sale section, you might be able to find one for much less than you would pay at a dealer.

Buy him a back up camera.

Your buddy needs to stand up and do the right thing one way or the other.

HKYStormFront 07-23-2012 10:01 AM

yea... i think the only option here is murder. if you believe the movies, pigs are the best way to dispose of a body

no but seriously, i'd get with the guy's insurance and have them take care of it. make sure the repair is done at a nissan authorized repair shop to maintain factory warranty on your paint and body work

370ZilverZ 07-23-2012 10:21 AM

Get estimates and tell your friend the he has the choice of paying for the repairs with cash, check or credit card to the repair shop or filing a claim with his insurance company. If he doesn't understand that is the right thing to do, then he isn't a friend anyways.

I say an eye for an eye. Now you back up into his. :eekdance:

A friends grandmother backed into my Z28 several years ago, smashed in the passenger quarter panel horrible...insurance took care of it-no problems for me except I didn't have it to drive...it happens...he's probably not any happier than you are about it. :shakes head:

About 25 years ago, I bumped into one of my 240Z's while backing into my driveway in my DD 240Z. I had to file a claim against myself and it was embarrassing.

I will tell you that OEM parts will cost somewhere around $2k cause I just had this done.... this included new emblems, a passenger light (no lense is available by itself) and an OEM rear bumper.

Either file with his company or file with yours and have him pay the deductible.

I had a "friend" at work back into my motorcycle a couple of months ago. It wasn't super bad but it ended up being $650 and 2+ weeks in the shop (waiting on parts). I was nice and let her (women... my weakness) pay in cash. It sucked because I normally would have gotten money for lost use on top of the repairs. Not to mention a diminished value claim.

My point... I ended up regretting it. Take it through the (his) insurance company. That's why you send them a check every month.

kfull 07-23-2012 01:56 PM

I actually had my rear bumper replaced a few weeks ago because my grandma hit it going like 2 mph (ha I know). Just the bumper plus labor was about 1150 bucks. If you have taillight damage, it will obviously be a bit more.

shaun66 07-23-2012 02:02 PM

My friend backed into my car on my first week of ownership. When I gave her the quote of 3500 dollars to fix everything, she denied it. Needless to say were not friends anymore :ugh2:

Thechidz 07-23-2012 02:21 PM

I would prefer he pay out of his pocket rather than through insurance and risk it showing up on carfax. I might only cost 1500 or so and if he has a $500 deductible it would be better just to pay for it

and friend or not, use insurance. and get diminished value check as well.
if he is your friend, he will listen to how you want the issue resolved.

I had one as a rental about 4 years ago... When I was looking for a new, inexpensive, economical daily... I did not even consider the Corolla. :D

yah, good move!

there are so many reliable cars out there no need to be some ugly little over priced sedan for women with short legs.

Then this is when you confess having had sex with his girlfriend/wife/sister and I guess this makes you two even.
:icon17:

Best of luck resolving it correctly.

That is ridiculous. I hate people.

If he doesn't pay up just call his dad and tell him how and why you are so disappointed in his son.
