Key Fob distance test?
Curious if anyone has performed a Key Fob distance test? I wonder how far or what would happen if the vehicle was started & driven away with the key fob left behind. Would it continue to run & if so for how far. Wondering if it has any anti-car jacking capabilites to it.
So has anyone tried this out? What were your results? Thanks |
It'll run for as long as the car is turned in with the no key detected thing beeping if its like my parents BMWs and mercedes.. never forget the time I got in one of their cars, thought the key was in my pocket only to drive about an hour, turn the car off and realize I was SOL... Couldnt lock OR restart the car.

yah, you would need to stall the car (or shut it off) and run about 20ft i think.
i know i can't start the car in the garage with my fob in the house. |

ya as long as its with in 31 inches it will start it up.

for mine to start, the key has got to be somewhere inside the car, i tried next to it outside the car, door open still nothing, ............ nothing until the fob was inside the car for me...

No one has done the driving away without the key fob test yet?

Changed the battery just a few weeks ago... also it did this before my stereo and I double checked after install to make sure it was plugged in.
Maybe I have a bad antenna... it works but I have to be right against the car for the door to unlock and have to have it close to the center console for the car to start. |
how about getting an aftermarket alarm with the secret kill switch with delay? push that, get pulled and thrown out of the car, but just sit there and take some youtube vids, upload while you wait.. :icon17:

Sorry for the necro but:
http://www.the370z.com/audio-video/5...l-bonanza.html Long story short: Was having weird key detection issues. Turns out that my "module" under the console wasn't plugged in properly. Dealership found the problem and reconnected the module. Car was fine so they parked it. I showed up 3 hrs later and the antenna is *completely* dead. I can't open the doors from outside the car without the physical key. Key fob is not detected anywhere inside the car except for inside the fobgina. Any way to reset the module or am I just boned? |
You try a seperate key? Could just be a coincidence and your key died... doubt there is any way for you to reset.

A) remember to plug the RFID control module back into the wiring harness and don't only plug half of the wires back in.
B) Do not run the ground for the parking brake/DVD motion override directly into your car's antenna system. http://www.the370z.com/members/dmhen...t-gf-frank.gif |
uhmm this is weird.
i read the owners manual. and supposedly 3 feet away from the car and the car will not start nor will unlock the door. which thats how it has been. although, one dya i was teaching my girl how to drive stick and she took off. about 30 feet away from me she stalled the car. all she did was step on the clutch and hit the start button and my car started. -_____- i really didnt like that bs. i feel like anyone can get in the car and it start it if the door is open. Sh!t sucks. |
i can confirm the driving away without the fob. :icon17::driving:

Sportscars aren't stolen often. Know why? It's because expensive sportscars have expensive security systems and stealing them is a huge risk that doesn't justify the reward. Fewer cars on the road = smaller market for thieves to unload.
Top 10 stolen cars in 2012: The 10 Most Stolen Vehicles - Forbes 1.1994 Honda Accord midsize 2.1998 Honda Civic compact 3.2006 Ford F-150 pickup 4.1991 Toyota Camry midsize 5.2000 Dodge Caravan minvian 6.1994 Acura Integra compact 7.1999 Chevrolet Silverado pickup 8.2004 Dodge Ram pickup 9.2002 Ford Explorer SUV 10.1994 Nissan Sentra compact No one is going to try to break into your Z. They might steal your wheels if they're pros, but the odds of someone trying to physically break into/drive your Z away are very slim. Odds are, if someone does - they're after your car in particular and they're professional (which means there's not much you can do about it if you don't have a garage). |

true but I think what was discussed in this thread was if you let the engine running without the fob, say you took the fob with you into the gas station and the car was running and unlocked someone could drive off with it....but they eventually would have to turn it off, so they really arent getting far. :rofl2:

Rules for not getting your **** jacked:
-Do not leave anything valuable on the seats of your car. Open the glove box to show there's nothing in it. -Do not have valuable aftermarket gear visible if you can help it. If you have a high-end head unit, make sure it has a removable faceplate or a failsafe on battery disconnect. -Use wheel locks -Park in well-lit areas. -Do not drive your baby to sporting events or large public outings where you're leaving your vehicle unattended for a predetermined period of time. -Buy a good alarm system with tilt sensors and a throttle crippler |
