Had a incident like that a while back and I was able to brake and steer around it with ease in my sport.

I think it is stupid for Nissan to even make the base without the sport brakes and tires. I had a good look at the brakes and tires on the base the other day that is just asking for an accident in the Z.

The Base BMW 135i comes with 6 piston calipers in the front and 2 piston in the rear and an underrated DI motor with twin turbos @ 300 Hp. If you are interested in a new car that has roughly the same performance stock, but a hell of a lot more luxury and kick *** technology check it out.
Also the modding the car is easier and cheaper a tune is $600 for 60 whp and 80 torque so 361 whp and 380 torque. Most people have them in the mid 12s with a CAI and CBE with tune.

Think that will be my next car.

Yeah, the base brakes didn't help me much, just locked up and slid. I was planning to replace them eventually...

I like the fact that the 135i has all the extras, and I definitely know how much easier it is to tune / modify for big gains, considering it's already TT from the factory. However, as of right now, I don't like the look of the 135i. Same deal with the Subaru's and Mitsubishi's, they just don't have the look that I like. Don't get me wrong, I know they can be made into beasts, but they just aren't for me. There are a few other cars that I will probably test drive, but as of right now, my plan is to upgrade to a nicer 370Z than I had.

and to answer the question, I was wearing my seatbelt, and yes I was taken to the hospital in an ambulance.

When I had a crash in my 99 Nissan Altima into a pole from bad weather at a simular speed, I also walked away with the same seat belt burns and that was it. Take the good with the bad. Bad your car got totaled, good that youre okay. Great because you get to get a better one without having the burden down the road of trying to sell an accident car (if the damage was more minor and they were fixing it)

I loved the Z so far, so as of now I will be trying to get another one. However, there are a few cars that I would like to test drive, although I'm almost certain they will be disappointing after driving the Z around for the past few months.

2013 Hyundai Genesis 2.0 Turbo is one I will test drive. I like the way this car looks, and although not as sexy as the Z, or as much race history as the Z, I like the fact that it is Turbo. Haven't done much research in this area, so I'm not sure how much further the car can be pushed beyond stock, without major internal upgrades.

I would also like to drive a 2013 Scion FR-S. As far as I know, these are only available in N/A version so far in the US, 200 hp. I'm just wondering how that 200hp would feel in a 2000 lb car...

I doubt I would be satisfied with the power of these cars now, but I would like to check them out.

Anyone else have any suggestions...I'm not a fan of the muscle car look(Mustangs, Camaros, Challngers/Chargers...etc)(except for the Vette). I prefer two door, two seat cars with a sleek look. The BMW 135i does not fit this description IMO, but I have never driven or been in one, so I can't say for sure that I don't like it, just not as sexy as the Z.

The z is totaled for sure.

At least you are doing well for the type of accident it is. I had an accident before in my first Z and its rough. :(

Yeah, I didn't have much time to react, but if I didn't swerve, I would have hit him head on full speed

FÚCK THE CAR! You have insurance, it's all good and dandy to say it sucks to see a Z gone, but it's MUCH worse to see a Z DRIVER gone! And thank God for, God, your accident is a terrible accident, and no shattered bones is a miracle!

If you need anything, I'm sure more than one of your Z brothers will be here for you, I might be in a different state, but if you need anything from Texas, give me a shout

(And I made a payment the day my last car was totaled and it sucked, but insurance overpaid for the car! AND if you don't get enough to buy a new car, I'm sure we can set up a fund for you, $1 donations, lol. I think we have enough members to make it possible)

Haha, my only worry is that it's an 09 base, I really hope I don't get hosed.

I thought about that, but considering they just refreshed it for 2013, I'll probably have to wait at least 4 years for the next iteration of the Z.

The car is totaled, the meaning of my comment was that with a force of 50mph from both cars, the damages arnt as bad as you would expect. Op is lucky that the hood didnt bend anymore and go through the windshield on impact. Looks like the fender on the driver side is ok too. Yeah the whole front end is smashed, but thats nothing taking in how fast each car was traveling.

MattP725 06-23-2012 08:38 PM

Did you have gap insurance? Might be a good thing in this case since the car was brandy new. Any idea if you owe more than the value?

I'm thinking there is a chance it's not totaled. Car has to be valued at least in the high 20s. Even if the block is cracked you are probably looking at 15-20k to repair max IMO.

Let us know how it turns out. You're pretty lucky.

Just to reiterate, 50mph is best guess. I swerved, and was applying the brake at the same time, I realized that may not have been made clear before. I had maybe a second on the brake, before the front of his car, hit the passenger rear of my car and sent me out of the "yellow line median" into incoming traffic. After I eat dinner, I'll draw a simple, and I mean simple .jpg to show more detail. Not trying to draw this thread out, but you all are really helping to keep my spirits up right now. I appreciate all of the kind words, as I am a newb to the forum

Yeah i know i was just going off your guess about your speed and the jetta's speed. Nonetheless the car did its job. It just goes to show you how well the Z was built for safety, being a little sports car and all. Like you said man, just keep your spirits up. I may not have as many posts as 90% of the guys on here but we are all in the Z family. Trying to help out our fellow Z enthusiats is the least we can do. Im sure by posting up your accident, it has helped you get through things to a certain extent. We are here bro, just post and you shall recieve

:iagree: about the car doing it's job, it did keep me safe. I added another picture that shows the Jetta on the original post, I thought I added this last night but I missed it. I also just noticed that both of my side mirrors, were flipped backwards, because of the impact I guess...

Absolutely... otherwise you would get FMV and still be responsible for the rest of the amount due to the bank...

I didn't get it on my 370z because I am outpacing the devaluation, but I've purchased it on two other cars that were either brand new or almost brand new... that is when they decline much quicker.

I didn't see that it was an 09 though... not sure what they consider fair market but you might end up with a wash on this one.

Either way at least you won't owe money on it.

I think its 50% percent of fmv is a loss they total it. It's definitely totalled after engine and all body work this thing is totalled. If they try to fix it and it keeps having to go in for repairs the insurance company would have a huge headache on their hands. Totalled

Thanks everyone. Just got the police report last night. The guy causing the accident was 75 years old. He was ticketed for Failure to Yield Right of Way Turning Left. Police report diagram is almost identical to the one I put up a few days ago, description and all. Hopefully I can get a rental today because I need to go back to the doc for more pain meds. And btw, even though I work from home, my manager and director both strongly suggested that I take the rest of this week off to recover...so looks like I'll just be chillin'...Z-less for a while...:shakes head:

The base brakes are just as good as the sport package brakes in normal driving. Larger brakes/rotors/calipers have increased thermal capacity and can cycle constant hard braking better. Once you have enough brake force available to overcome tire traction, adding more won't make a significant difference.

...and as for the tires...they are the same type/model/brand as the ones on the Nismo, just not as wide (about a 1" difference).

^^it looks pretty sweet. About the 135i though, they are nice and quick. My best friend has one and he loves it, its not very reliable though. His warranty ran out late April or early May and his car has already been in the shop twice since then. So its been about 1500 in repairs in the past month.

Not to sound like a know it all or anything but fun fact: two cars in a head on collision both going 50mph does not result in a 100mph crash. Learned that from Mythbusters! With variations to velocity and mass of each car, the end result is that the two vehicle's momentum will cancel each other out. :stirthepot:

Glad the OP got away with only minor injuries.

Cmike2780 07-12-2012 01:25 PM

Hmmm interesting. What are the odds that they have the same mass and velocity to cancel each other out though.

w0rM 07-12-2012 08:51 PM

Still no word on if it's totaled or not?

I had a similar accident in my 350z in 2010. I was only doing about 35 though so the damage wasn't as bad. The car was about $1000 short of being totaled. I actually made about $3k on it for lost use along with the repair so it wasn't all bad. I still ended up getting more than KBB top trade value for it on the 370z when I traded it in this year.
