Ever Get Rear Ended?

I was sitting at a stop light the other day, and I lifted my foot off of the brake because I was on level ground and a thought came to mind. I wonder if anyone here has ever been rear ended in this type of situation.

Sitting at a light, still red, lift your foot off of the brake, and BAM! The person behind you thinks the light has changed and plows into the back of you. Makes me think about holding my foot on the pedal until I move through the light. No WAY is Iris getting tapped like that!

Thechidz 06-01-2012 10:40 PM

And an airconditioner could fall out a window and smash the windshield.

Seriously though i think its possible to worry too much about it sometimes. It seems like you may just be inviting problems by stressing every POSsible scenario

40TH4ME 06-01-2012 10:53 PM

Dude, are you serious? That could totally happen. I guarantee it's happened before, exactly like I described. Just curious if it's happened to anyone here.

I was involved in some rear ending, but did not involve my car. :ugh2:

I've been rear ended before. If I had not had my foot firmly on the break I would have been pushed into the intersection no question about it.

Zenki370 06-02-2012 08:06 AM

I was rear ended in my Lexus GS430. I was stopped, the 96 volvo.... eh not so much. She hit the car hard enough for them to cut out the drivers side quarter panel and have a new one welded in...... The car barely moved with the brakes on, it just took it. Her car was totaled, air bags out and everything... I drove my car home.

:icon18: That must hurt!!!

scottIN 06-02-2012 03:15 PM

Never let your foot of the brake at a stop light. It's a great way to get rear-ended. Especially if you're in a tall vehicle where the person in front of you can't see the light (does not apply in the Z).

MightyBobo 06-02-2012 03:59 PM

I always take my foot off the brake. I've never been rear ended because of it. Been doing it for years, not going to stop anytime soon.

And any person who accelerates based off nothing more than brake lights is an idiot, anyway.

PapoZalsa 06-02-2012 04:04 PM

I take the foot off the brake if another car is already stopped behind mine and the wait is long. Sometimes when is a sudden stop in traffic due to a traffic jam or accident I put my four way hazard lights on.

Yeah there is no question there are idiots on the road. Despite them being an idiot when they hit you, you still lose.

onzedge 06-02-2012 07:22 PM

I have not worried about getting rear ended since my 6 month stay in County a few years back. Let me tell you, it was a constant concern, but it conditioned me to the point that I never worry about it anymore.

^ What he said.

While they may be the idiot, I'd like to help them as much as possible with avoiding being hit.

A buddy of mine has been in several accidents, and while none of them were his fault they all could have been avoided had he driven smarter.

This is what I do as well in the Z.

I got rear ended a month ago in my parent's RX400h by some guy in a BMW 550i. I was sitting at a light and I saw him stop behind me so I look forward waiting for the light to change. Next thing I know, bam he hits me. All that needed to be replaced on my car was the bumper cover, his hood, front bumper, grills, and headlights were all fubar'ed because of the height difference between cars.

Weird thing was that when we pulled over, he got out and his pants were unzipped and his belt unbuckled. He was the only one in the car, and made no effort to zip up until my GF got out of the car and walked over. :icon14:

I spent 5 nights in Rikers Island when I was young. They tried to rear end me the first two nights but I had enough squabbles to prevent it.

No doubt, I'd get REAL loose.

I was reading up on your rear ended well I had a 2010 Black 370z Roadster yes it was written off ,stopped on the side of the road to get some information off my mobile phone and bang right up the back of me I spent 8 hours in hospital till they checked me out ,now I have 2011 black 370z roadster ,I'm from Zclub.com.au in Australia here is shot from our gallery http://zclub.com.au/forums/index.php...e/2790-ja5jpg/http://zclub.com.au/forums/index.php...e/2790-ja5jpg/

I was at a stop sign and there was a bit of rain..I suddenly heard the car behind me get hit...I was safe but got out to see if everyone was ok.

..the guy in the car behind me had been rear ended.. He put his hands to his head as he looked at his damaged car and said "Oh No!" Then I looked and noticed he still had the dealer papers in the window of his brand new Lexus!! :(

red6spd 06-03-2012 02:36 PM

I got popped from the rear in my Infiniti once. I heard the tires lock up and had enough time to put my foot back on the brake (car was a stick) and avoided hitting the guy infront of me.

Shotta 06-03-2012 06:30 PM

I got rear ended approx 20 mins after driving off of the dealers lot. I was stopped on the highway for heavy traffic and a massive accident happened 3 cars behind me.

The third car got smashed forward and as I tried to accerate a little to try and not drive into the car ahead of me. I got love tapped in the rear as I rolled forward. I was freakin furious and thought the whole rear end was bashed in.

Turns out I only have a few light scuffs and the impact strip wasnt even bumped. Basically since I was slightly rolling forward at the time of impact, there was minimal damage.

2 of the 3 cars behind me were all write offs.

steveg78 06-03-2012 07:01 PM

Twice in my jeep. The stall speed on the torque converter allows me to let go of the brake and the car won't move. Both times fricken idiot female drivers who weren't paying attention hit the gas and BAM! I leave my hitch on for this sole reason. No damage to my car. Neither girl even got out of their car. Just a ditsy "sooooory". Whatever, their front ends were usually in pieces laying on the street. I handed one lady her license plate as she was asking me "are you sure you don't want to call the police"? For some reason she didn't understand that calling the police would result in her getting a ticket, points and higher insurance.:rofl2:

Yep...drivers only stop when they see red taillights. It's good to tap your brakes if you're at the end of the stack. Hopefully you'll wake up the approaching driver.

It's good that people don't need to signal to brake. We'd have more accidents.

A lady backed into my Civic years ago in a parking lot.

ive heard of others getting hit like that. some AT drivers are like babies... they only have on or off, no intermediate control.

for me, i was waiting for the light at a walmart parking lot like 20yrs ago and some dumb chick rear ended me cause she was looking for something in her purse. :shakes head:

ever since i drive looking forward and back even while stopped. :ugh2:

BlackZ85 06-26-2012 10:17 AM

got rear ended by a 80 year old woman and i only had my z for about 3 months, her insurance gave me a check, used the check on a amuse rear bumper :)

JARblue 06-26-2012 10:25 AM

On level ground, I rarely hold the brake pedal, which is primarily for comfort. I'm with Bobo and have been doing it for years and never been rear ended at a light. I would expect getting rear ended at a stop light is going to happen regardless whether your brake lights are on or not.

However, I generally always put my foot on the brake whenever a car is coming to a stop behind me and wait until they are stopped to let it off again. One other thing I always do on uphill slopes is before someone pulls up behind me, I let off the brake, roll back a hair and make sure they realize I'm in a MT and don't need to pull right up on my a$$. I've kissed an old lady's Lexus hood with my Explorer Sport trailer hitch before when she pulled up too close and I was still learning the clutch - she was very nice about it, tho, and understood it was her fault.

DarkZ 06-26-2012 06:58 PM

I had a funny smell and some fluid leak from my rear-end once. :icon23:
