Schedule 1 / Schedule 2 Maintenance Interval - Huntsville, AL - ideas?

Schedule 1:
(more severe operating conditions), every 3750 miles or 3 months, whichever comes first.

Use schedule 1 if you primarily operate your vehicle under any of these conditions:
1) repeated short trips of less than 5 miles in normal temperatures or less than 10 miles in freezing temperatures
2) stop and go traffic in hot weather or low speed driving for long distances
3) driving in dusty conditions or on rough, muddy, or salt spread roads
4) towing a trailer, or using a camper or car-top carrier.
-----------------
Schedule 2:
(less severe operating conditions), every 7500 miles or 6 months, whichever comes first.

Schedule 2 features 7500 mile service intervals; with Schedule 2 fewer maintenance items are regulary checked or replaced than with schedule 1.

Generally, schedule 2 applies only to highway driving in temperate conditions. Use schedule 2 only if you primarily operate your vehicle under conditions other than those listed on Schedule 1.
------------------

So my question is to fellow Huntsvillians;
As a light driver that has 14mile round trip every day to/from work; it would seem ideal to get schedule 2....but what spooks me is it states that "fewer maintenance items are regulary checked or replaced than with schedule 1".

So that would push me to goto schedule 1, because more items are checked; which seems more ideal; but then again; it sort of says not required if work is within a short distance; and you don't drive in bad conditions; or you aren't a wear/tear driver.

You can go with either one, but maybe schedule one since you are only going nine miles more. You will probably be fine with schedule two as well. In the end you can really go whenever you really want. Since you are really unsure just take the avg. of the two schedules & go b/w 5-6K miles to get an oil change.

You no help. :icon17: ;)

I'm not from Alabama so I can't comment. I know Huntsville is a nice town though. Been there couple of times. :tup:

Congrats on your '12 Z! I would go with the more frequent intervals, just to be on the safer side.

You can definitely get away with schedule 2 down here. Weather is nice and the roads are mostly traffic-free.

I don't recommend going 7500 miles between oil changes if you run the Nissan oil.

My personal preference was to run German castrol and change at about 4500-5000 miles, based on watching the uoa's.
First couple changes should be more frequent though.

Also, change the rear diff way ahead of schedule. Like 12k or so. Put in better fluid than the factory crap.

You can get by with schedule 2 I have no doubt and if you are just driving it easy back and forth to work and an occassional weekend drive. I am betting that it depends on the Tech you get as to what maintenance items are actually checked on either schedule. I will be on the schedule 1 or some variation thereof. You can always cut the difference and get an oil change every 5,000 miles.

OK...... So when do you exactly change your magically oil then? Taking the avg. of the two schedules & going b/w 5-6K to get an oil change seems to be pretty reasonable. Other's have stated pretty much the same here.

About 3 weeks ago, they auto scheduled me to come in at 3750...ie: Schedule 1;

If I want to alter that, do you just simply call them up and ask to be put on a schedule 2 plan, ie: please reschedule me for the 6 month mark/7500mile mark instead?

speedfreek 04-27-2012 10:31 AM

No, I would go in for the 3750 mile service. It will be good to drop the oil to remove any contaminants and metal shavings that would of collected during break in and get some fresh oil put in. At that point I would tell them to put you on schedule 2.

Called them up, and found out the first two are free, ie: the 3750 one, then the next schedule 1 check; if I chose to use synthetic, they use mobil-1.

schedule2 price hovers lose 200's, schedule 1 hovers low 100's

I just got my first oil change today & I only had 273 miles on the car, but the good thing is that it was FREE. I wanted to get all the gunk out of the oil & have fresh oil. The Nissan dealership put my next oil change at 5,200 miles & said it would be about $90 with tax for them to change my oil going forward.

I just may end up sticking w/ the Schedule 1, since I'm not "in the know" with the innards of the car, and would rather them check more items. Since they check fewer things w/ schedule two, that is my reason. If I knew more about the innards of the car, and had more "mechanic type" knowledge, I would probably do schedule 2, that way I could do a lot of it on my own.

The first two times I bring in the car it's free. When I bring it in for the first time, is there an advised oil type to bring with me, or just let them dump in the mobil-1 synthetic?
