Dyno an engine is not what he was asking about ,he is asking about break in procedure two different things.

Do you really have to have the oil changed once reached 1200miles? The dealer placed a 3750miles reminder sticker on my 1st oil change. Do all dealers use Ester oil with the Z's?
The dealer gave me 2 free oil changes. Thanks.

They will probably use Ester oil on your free changes. Synthetic you will pay extra. It is recommend you change the oil at 1,200miles to flush out the oil and any contaminants that may be in there.

Thanks Lakeshow, after the 1,200mile oil change, how many mile should be the next oil change?

Bingo!!! To each thier own but the book doesn't mention anything about changing oil after 1200... That number kind of developed on its own here. All these numbers, break in methods etc are just everyone's opinions. Read your owners manual and you'll see what that Nissan recommends not going over 4k rpm, no prolonged driving at the same rpm for the first 1200mi. It doesn't say anything about draining all fluids after you hit 1200. I followed the book on all my cars and never had a problem. Got my first oil change on the z @3750 and I switched to redline after 2 oil changes I think. Now I just get an oil analysis and change the oil at the recommended interval of the lab. Takes the guess work out of wondering what condition your oil and engine is in...

You should probably do 3,000-3,500 intervals after the first one. Not the 5-7,000 that they claim. The cleaner the better.

So you pay a lab to analyze your oil while you could pay the same/less/slightly more to get it changed? :ugh2:

Yeah. I pay $25 for a full analysis and then they give me a recommended interval for my next change. I am going 6k on this interval. Read up a little buddy and you'll learn.

Noone that I am aware of actually breaks and engine in at the factory. Maybe some of the ultra high-end cars, but I wouldn't know.

No, they don't. It's not required in the 370Z, so they won't use it unless you pay extra.

sorry for my ignorance guys but whats up with the so happy to hit 1200 and change oil soon break her in and etc... ???
reason why i ask is bc i am novice with this (I'm sure y'all noticed already) and i just got my Z i only have 240 miles not 2K 40, but really only just 240 miles. I'm dying to speed but I'm trying to get the hang of switching gears first.... anyways whats up with all of that?
thank you for the explanations in advance. thank you.

at 400 miles i was already redlining 2/3/4...and my z is running a lot harder than other z's who waited 1500 miles before getting on it...break it in like a b*tch and itll drive like a b*tch

you mean you would go all the way up the 7500 rpm? i don't think i have ever gone past 6000 rpm :)

slowpoke break-in

the '08 350 enth. felt broken in to me around 45k, noticed pressure drop of several psi (about 3+ @2k rpm) at that time. traded @ 50k though .. articles like this one made me think it was worth it;

Nissan 370Z Review; Engine (VQ37VHR) > 370z.com > 370z.com - Magazine

for '12 370+sp, as I got 2 free oil changes, so I changed after 300m, though wanted to do at 20; micro-debris flush was idea. @ 700m now, but daily 20 - 30 mile commute has nice rpm variation built in. 2 or more min warm up, stay under 2k for first 1.5 mile, take it up to 3k for next 7 miles with 5 traffic lights up to highway. then vary up to 4k and down over some 15 - 25min. will see how oil temps go w/ re: to oil cooler option but doubt it'll be an issue around city hi-way loops.

1200m break-in seems good 'nuff, then work in 4 - 5k range for a few hundred, then 5 -6k, etc.. No hurry. 2nd oil change around 1000, synth blend after that; 'should' do pre-10k say some.

ImportConvert 03-18-2012 09:29 PM

A look at a new vehicle uoa will explain the early first change. At no other time should the oil be as dirty as what comes out at the first change.
