There are plenty of "dummy proof" tips, links, and suggestions in this thread. Just read them over and you'll be ok.

Wrap the shift lever in a few layers of shop towel and then grap it with vise grips. Wrap the knob with a towel and grab it with a strap wrench (available at any hardware place).

Hold the vise grips and twist the knob free with the strap wrench.

On a side note: I got mine off without tools -- just lucky I guess.

How do you get access to the shaft to grab with vice grips

GaleForce 03-13-2012 04:37 PM

You need to pull up on the trim that goes around the shifter. Pull at the back first. Mybe get a towel to place on your console for protection too.

I sent a PM on this to you -- here is the text:

I think I popped the boot ring up (I do not know if this is the correct word for it -- it is the metal part that the bottom of the boot attaches to).

Grab the shift lever from underneath the boot ring.

I do not remember if you can push the boot down far enough.

Im scared Im gonna break some ****:excited: Does the trim ring just snap in there

GaleForce 03-13-2012 05:48 PM

The only way you'll break that ring is if you use a hammer to remove it. Just grab the end nearest the rear of the car and gently pull straight up.

It pops up -- gently slide a flat screwdriver under it and twist. I was nervous too, but no big deal.

No so easy on my car, the Cheesy Harbor Freight strap wrench just keeps slipping. Any other tricks?

Are you wrapping the knob first?
