what strap wrench did you use?

happytheman 02-28-2012 11:39 PM

I had no problems with the removal of my stock knob. Of course, this is why I mentioned in my earlier description that you're going to have to hulk the OEM knob off! It can, however, be done with finesse and without utter destruction in cases such as the Ken-San! :rofl2:

wdkwang 02-29-2012 03:40 AM

b&m short shifter with stock shift knob. happy with it
the bulky stock shifter conforms well to my palm so no complaints

happytheman 02-29-2012 06:21 AM

So in closing what your saying is that your original equipment knob conforms well to your palm. Ok. I think I've got it now. :)

Just a generic strap wrench. I bought it at Canadian Tire, it's "mastercraft", really just a rebranded made in China tool. It came as a two pack, one small and one large. I started with the small one but ended up using the large one because I needed the leverage. I swear the factory used a whole tube of thread lock to secure my shift knob.

ZMan8 02-29-2012 09:29 AM

I'll give it a go in the summer and just buy a random strap wrench from local parts store.

Mandingo 02-29-2012 01:15 PM

I used a cheap Kobalt strap wrench from Lowes. It didn't damage the knob at all.

Alchemy 02-29-2012 01:19 PM

Shortest throws??? 7AT hands down :roflpuke2:

edub370 02-29-2012 01:23 PM

ratchet strap + microfiber wrapped around knob = stock knob taken cleanly off.

team voodoo pearl shift knob sits quite a bit lower which makes it feel like a short shift without swapping any real hardware.

http://www.the370z.com/members/edub3...shift-knob.jpg

without that zee toyz shift collar it sits another 1/2" lower. one of the bettwer investments i've made on the car. the shorter, metal shift knob definately makes for a more positive feel when shifting thru the gears. i love it

Zeuz 02-29-2012 03:09 PM

I find the right knob is difficult to find. i believe when it comes to that it becomes very personal. To how you shift and drive and what feels the best to you. Everyone can give you there opinion but only you can decide what fits you.

On my car i have the Tommy kaira hebi bebi!:happydance: i like it nice round shape and heavy ! i hope this helps!

happytheman 02-29-2012 03:47 PM

Yummm! The Hebi is such a sweet knob, but pricey as anything!

Ha thats my car.. came here to post that..

That knob threads in pretty far, so it kinda feels like it shortens the throw of the shifter just a bit. As many have said our shifter throw is pretty short already. IMO this makes it perfect.

happytheman 02-29-2012 07:45 PM

Care to sell it to a needy friend? :)

Thanks to everyone's advice, I went with the JDM Password stainless shift knob with a titanium base... It looks great (matches the interior silver accents in the Z perfectly), improves the shift feel dramatically (because it is heavy, shorter than stock, and fits in the palm perfectly) and the install took about 15 minutes (thanks to all the advice on this forum). I am very satisfied with the result!

Best mod ever for under 60 bucks.

Got my JDM knob but Im a bit worried about trying to get the Og knob off and fugging things up, need dummy proof instructions or pics:pics: please

GaleForce 03-13-2012 11:20 AM

There are plenty of "dummy proof" tips, links, and suggestions in this thread. Just read them over and you'll be ok.

Wrap the shift lever in a few layers of shop towel and then grap it with vise grips. Wrap the knob with a towel and grab it with a strap wrench (available at any hardware place).

Hold the vise grips and twist the knob free with the strap wrench.

On a side note: I got mine off without tools -- just lucky I guess.

How do you get access to the shaft to grab with vice grips

GaleForce 03-13-2012 04:37 PM

You need to pull up on the trim that goes around the shifter. Pull at the back first. Mybe get a towel to place on your console for protection too.

I sent a PM on this to you -- here is the text:

I think I popped the boot ring up (I do not know if this is the correct word for it -- it is the metal part that the bottom of the boot attaches to).

Grab the shift lever from underneath the boot ring.

I do not remember if you can push the boot down far enough.

^^ HIGHLY recommended! :)

Evil Sports 03-13-2012 04:55 PM

Im scared Im gonna break some ****:excited: Does the trim ring just snap in there

GaleForce 03-13-2012 05:48 PM

The only way you'll break that ring is if you use a hammer to remove it. Just grab the end nearest the rear of the car and gently pull straight up.

It pops up -- gently slide a flat screwdriver under it and twist. I was nervous too, but no big deal.

No so easy on my car, the Cheesy Harbor Freight strap wrench just keeps slipping. Any other tricks?

Are you wrapping the knob first?

I have tried all sorts of different short shifters in various cars. I always end up with a B&M shifter in the end. Less noise, improved shifting and quality built. I have two presently. One in my Corvette and one in my Firebird. Previously, I had one in my 350Z and it was quiet and it improved the shifting. It was a super short throw and seemed to take out the notchiness.

I have a 370Z with a S7. Had I bought a 370Z with a manual shift, one of the first things I would have bought would have been a short shifter and modified the clutch linkage for better take up as I did in my 350Z. Night and Day difference imo.

New2Zeez 03-06-2017 06:57 AM

Yes IMO it does. With the stock shifter I would sometimes slip into 2nd coming from 4th, instead of 3rd. But due to the precise gate of the B&M setup I don't see that happening anymore. There are those who may not like the effort that is needed to shift the B&M, but I've had short shifters on all of my manual cars (4, 6 & 8 cylinders) for the last 15 years so I'm just used to the extra effort needed. I sit high as a tall person in my Z with long arms, so leverage using the shorter stick is not an issue for me either. I also replaced the OEM knob with a new one, since the old one was so difficult to remove.
