grannying the Z
As you guys know I have the 11 Z a7 and I'm a strong proponent of driving a sports car like a sports car. But this month is a little tight financially so I decided to see if I can get better mileage out of my Z.
Under my normal fun-drive conditions I averaged about 11city/20highway, leaving me around 17.1mpg's total. It seemed my 09 was able to pop out 19mpg's under the same fun drive standard. It seemed when I grannied the 09 I only received 1.5mpg's more than when having fun so I drove it funstyle most of the time. That's why I have an altima. For normal driving anyway. Gas prices though are pretty high and christmas plus a few unforseen events have made me cut back on gas useage and try to conserve more gas in mt Z. I'm actually pulling out 21mpg city and 31mpg highway for a combined drive of 25.6mpg's. Something my 09 Z or G couldn't do. :) now once the budget is back to normal. Its back to normal driving. But I'm just glad to know my Z can also be an economical gas saver if I try hard to do so. |
Those are some good numbers!
|
wow, sorry to see. but hey you do wat you need to do. lol

25.6 is great mileage! How did you achieve this again? I also have a '11 a7
|
if you are cruising at 2.5k rpm - for a long time.. you will get mid 20's...
|
I can't do better than 21mpg
|
Ive noticed when I cruise at 60mph on the highway my gas mileage increases a lot, but its so hard to keep up! :icon17:
|
Yeah, I average about 21. I got 26.5 on the drive back from Vegas, though, but that is not a normal drive.
|
My grannying period was both times I broke in the engine. I once got 17.4 MPG.
The only time I came up on a GTR while on a twisty mountain course and I was limited to 4,000 rpm's (break in). It was plenty. The idiot who bought this GTR, CA liscense plate OHMU, was useless. Not that it has stuck with me this past year plus. :icon17: |
My car hasn't gone over 5000RPM in like 2 months, don't feel bad. With the cold weather and the short drive, I can barely get the car up to operating temp
|
Coming from a 350z and a 323ci prior to that, I found there is no big difference between city&HWY on the bimmer, the 350z, which is bigger dispacement and more horsepower, have the SAME fuel enconomy with the bimmer, even a bit better on the HWY, same or just a tiny tiny worse for city.
The 370z, to my surprise, has the best milage between the three. I think this is amazing from NISSAN |
also in my area we use oxygenated gas in the winter months so this stuff burns quicker vs summer time.
im consistently getting 15-16mpg in my G in the winter months vs about 18-19mpg in the summer on surface road commute. |
If I granny my Z, I get 16 MPG. If I have some fun, I get 14 MPG. All city driving.
I rather have some  |

Basically off the light, I. Ultra-slowly get up to speed like an old fogey. I never sprint and I don't go over 60mph. It sux but it works. Lol. |

My car has full bolt-ons, fully tuned, well maintained. I broke the engine in properly too. I just forget about it and have fun with it now. |
I drive like a granny almost all the time. I know the Z's can be driven hard, I just like my car too much.

That's strange. With a tune you should be running at minimum close to stock mileage. Maybe the tune you have is race spec and very aggressive??? That may be why you saw a drop in gas? |
I used to granny but I can't stay out of it now that I have the F.I. TDX.....love that sound!
|
My Z got +5 mpg average after break-in period or so. Anyone else?
|
Typically, cars start seeing better gas mileage after 5000 miles.
After next month, I'm off the granny wagon and back on the fast lane. :) |
You'll also see better mpg come warmer weather. This winter blend is the sh!ts for for economy.
Interesting to note; My motorcycle gets upward of 38-40 mpg during the summer (ridden aggressively). Yet once it starts getting cooler/colder (40's/50's), my mpg can drop to low 30's and even upper 20's (not ridden so aggressively). Depending on how the vehicle is tuned, some engines are more/less efficient during warmer ambient temps. ymmv (literally). |
From about 55-88 degrees is when I get optimum mileage. Anything higher or lower and the weather kills the mileage.
|
I get 24.8mpg every tank. Lots of 60-70 on the hwy every day, I nail it whenever no slow arses are in the way.
