Z Looked Awesome on a Tow Truck (Sarcastic)

Tried to start my Z today and nothing. Towed to Nissan dealer and its the steering wheel lock mechanism. Dealer says its on national backorder and it may take up to two weeks to get. What a complete joke!! Its not if its going to happen to everyone but when!!!

m4a1mustang 01-21-2012 07:38 PM

Yikes... this has been happening left and right lately.

kenchan 01-21-2012 07:39 PM

Ouch. :(

gbrettin 01-21-2012 07:41 PM

I think this is a call for me to check the lock mechanism on my '09... This is happening way too much.

GaleForce 01-21-2012 07:41 PM

This sucks... In a way I'm glad my Z is in storage... but I'm afraid of what's in store for me in the spring.

Hopefully this ordeal will be as painless as possible for you.

sonic370 01-21-2012 07:43 PM

makes me happy i bought the extended warranty in that case........
heard the part is 500.......thats a little less than a third of what i paid for the warranty...im at 35.700 extended it to 75,000 for 1200.

with prices today one visit will almost cover that..........

MJB 01-21-2012 07:47 PM

Wow... This is getting ridiculous Nissan :shakes head:

bjblackout 01-21-2012 07:55 PM

I was on here reading about everyone having this problem last week and today it happens to me. Dealership said at leat two weeks on the part and that the conservative estimate. Then I ask if I can get a car to drive and they say they have to get it approved. I am thinking "oh it better get approved"!!!! Will have more details from them on expected time on Monday. They did pay for the tow.

PapoZalsa 01-21-2012 07:57 PM

That sucks, I dont know why Nissan doesn't do a TSB.

I hope they give you a loaner! You should raise hell if they don't.

Yup, still looks good on a flatbed.

Sorry to hear about another one. Time for a recall by Nissan for these locks on the Z.

GaleForce 01-21-2012 09:08 PM

Everyone will have paid for this fix out of pocket by the time Nissan clues into this fiasco. :shakes head:

kenchan 01-21-2012 11:35 PM

i think im going to buy me a whole collection of steering locks. :icon17: :ugh2:

padillaZ 01-21-2012 11:40 PM

Not tryin to thread jack but does anyone else notice the two different rims on the track z or is it fine because it can probably catch a Gtr lol

BlackZeda 01-21-2012 11:53 PM

Well at least it happened to you just once...The first time my Z died they had to use a wrecker since I was inside a parking garage. It left a nice indent in each of my front rims.

I agree, it does look sweet being winched up:

Sorry to see. That's rough. Hopefully Nissan addressed this issue soon.

cossie1600 01-22-2012 12:31 AM

start praying

McNasty 01-22-2012 01:30 AM

When this happened to mine (like 2-3 weeks ago) the lady at the dealership told me she had 3 cars already there with the same issue (various models) and that it was only recently that she'd even heard of this problem....she sucked at her job FYI

Everyone with a 2009, anyway.

If I had a 2009 and didn't want to trade it, I'd replace the lock module preemptively.

Or an early production 2010.

zuperman 370 01-22-2012 08:36 AM

woow this problem just poped out of no where all of a sudden, been on the forum for a couple years now and threads about this problem have been coming out left and right, same thing just happened to me 09 370z, 35k kilometers.

ZCarMan 01-22-2012 09:33 AM

I figure I'm just going to order the dang part now before it happens to me. UGHH!!

Is the culprit: mileage, time, low battery power, or fill in blank?

I will state that this Z is most* aggressive looking 370 to date.

* to avoid fighting; top few at least.

The GTR recall for the same part blames it on "excessive oil within the ESCL" and the failure symptom is electo-mechanical in nature. The cause of failure is likely to be a combination of factors, one of which may be the cold weather and I suspect tension on the lock to be another. My 09 is up to 34,000 miles with a revision B and I have not yet encountered it.

That is the AM-Performance race car at Barber! It looks even better in person.

brucelidat 01-22-2012 12:19 PM

I'm glad I have a 2011. From what I've read on this issue, it's been fixed on my car right? I feel bad for all you 2009 owners, though. Nissan should really own up to this and fix it at no charge/recall.

Is this not covered under warranty?

If you're out of warranty then it's not covered, unless they feel like being nice.

bjblackout 01-22-2012 08:24 PM

I only have 15000 miles so I am still under warranty also!! Thank God
