Help choosing a short shifter
I have seen a lot of different short shifters for our cars and at prices that vary from a little over $100 up to $400. Which brand of short shifter would you recommend for our cars?
|
to be honest... none... will give a super choppy shifter feel and from what i hear they wear on synchros pretty hard... maybe someone else with a little more info on these can chime in

I just installed a TWM short shifter with a password JDM knob and the feel is amazing. From what read about the B&M during my descision process and on other cars I was willing to pay a bit more for the TWM. So far I can not think of a single negative thing to say about setup.

I 2nd the belief that it puts excess strain on the syncros. The Z's shifter isn't that long as it is mind you I say that after driving muscle cars. Sure its not as sweet and short as a Honda but its by no means a long path between gates.

yah, unless its really wobbly like those old time WRX's i dont run short shifters. you can get a shorter weighted knob and make a world of difference on the Z. :)

I have a B & M with a PWJDM knob. Shifting is quick and precise. I had a buzzing at high RPM that I attributed to the shifter itself but when I replaced the stock knob with this PWJDM one, it is quiet as a little mouse -- a little baby sleeping mouse.
As far as excessive wear on synchros -- hmmm. I had not heard that and the comments to that effect seem quite anecdotal. I have run shrort shifters in many different cars and have not experienced troubling, out of the norm transmission issues. Like Dr. W Edwards Deming always said: "In God we trust -- all others must use data". http://www.the370z.com/members/onzed...6-img-1722.jpg |
mr.onzedge- i thought you have a nicer picture of your knob without the slipping baggie pants look? :icon17:
and i too dont think there's any 'extra' wear on the syncro's. you just need to push harder into the gates. |

I have the TWM short shifter. You can read about it here - my the370z.com short shifter DIY
Since that post I too installed the Password JDM stainless steel shift knob, but have no wheel time with the knob installed. |
I have the B&M shifter as well with the Password JDM knob like above and love the setup. IMO the shifts are short precise and firmer that the stock shifter. I have not felt any problems with the syncros as well. If I had to do it over again i must say I would because I love the firmer feeling.

I'd leave it alone in this car.

AMS Shortshifter -middle setting- and weighted Blox 490 knob makes it so effortless compared to stock I'd never go back. I don't have synchroRev and it was hard to be precise before, noticeably better and smoother now, both up and down the gears. A good synthetic oil in the tranny is great too.

i have a short shifter and i wouldn't do without it. only bad thing is that it vibrates a lil once you hit vtak

I've got the TWM with a A6 Leopard knob and it is hands down one of my favorite mods. I ran just the shifter for a while and the shifts were shorter but required a little more effort. After putting on the weighted knob, though, everything came together. I get a short, smooth, crisp shift every time.

I have felt the AMS and it wasn't what I expected... its a little harsh and notchy. I would buy a B&M though if I got one. I've never felt one of their shifters that I didn't like.

B&M R&D'd my car for their short shifter 18k miles ago. I haven't had one problem with it or syncros since it went in. 4 track days to boot.

So before I spend my money, is it confirmed that a weighted knob and a short shifter wont damage the syncros in the tranny or shift linkage?
|
I have the AMS shifter with the stock knob. On the lowest setting it is super short and notchy. The middle setting is where I have it mainly and its shorter than stock but not as notchy and the highest setting is the one I use when I am on the highway because it makes shifting like butter. Had it on for three years and love it. Oh and it takes two seconds to switch from one height to another.

I vote TWM shifter. It's not adjustable but it's one solid piece of metal. |

Thanks for replying. Any suggestion on a weighted knob other than PwdJDM? |
I'm saving for a short shifter but currently have a twm knob. Fantastic even on the stock shifter.

Honestly no, still have the stock one. Had the first pwdjdm one, just wasn't for me. A lot of people like the tommy kaira "hebi bebi" one. There's several others that make heavier knobs, it really just depends what kind of grip you like.
