I just need answers..

So currently I live in Wheeling, IL & I'm moving to California in a year or two. The only problem I have with moving to California is car modding... I don't get it, I see all these people from Cali with their 370's modded so much, & how can you get away with that?

Good question.

The level and type of modifying you do depends on a few factors. All of the mods I have done on my car are legal in CA, with the exception of my intakes. When it comes time to smog my car (about 4 years from now), I will replace my intakes with the stock units a couple of weeks before I take it in.

There are other folks who go further in their mods than I have and they are taking a chance, in my opinion. For example, if you replace the cats with test pipes and you get pulled over for noise (or another reason), you can find yourself in hot water if the officer decides to pursue it. Any non-CARB (California Air Resources Board) approved modifications to anything that impacts emissions is very bad to be caught with. At the extreme, your vehicle is impounded and at the least, it's a hassle.

It's up to you in terms of mods and how much attention you want to draw to yourself and how much risk you can tolerate.

These are my opinions only.

why dont you just stay in wheeling? easy and cheap. :)

ive had modded cars in LA but concentrated mostly on suspension bits. intake was carb and exhaust (catback) passed smog check. unless you're doing precat changes or FI you'll be fine i thinks.

My experience has usually been that if you're not some attention whore 16 year old and you're not showing off any chance you get, you watch out for the police and are, for the most part, a safe driver, the cops won't give you too much sh!t here.

1. Because we just don't give a damn and when it comes time to get the vehicle actually smogged, we've already had it for what is it?... 4 or 5 years and we're ready to sell it anyway.

and

2. Why on earth would you want to come to this state? It's so F'd up I'm ready to get out! I mean, they just approved some ridiculous railway that goes from hillbillyville to some prison that will cost us billions and Jerry Brown in all of his infintile wisdom now says that I have to pay for illegal aliens to go to college.

Fantastic!

KillerBee370 01-08-2012 05:56 PM

To add on to point #1...

We aren't driving some Civic were illegal mods are ticketed because the car most likely contains stolen parts and that's what cops target. Our cars are in a bit different of a realm $$wise.

Yeah about these chicago politics... :wtf2:

Edit: From what I heard at work (accounting) Cali and Illinois are considered the two hopeless states as far as budget issues go.

Stay in wheeling, I live near buffalo grove!

Waiz 01-09-2012 12:59 AM

California is a big place, it really depends on what city you're planning on moving to.

Keep the politics out of this thread and Forum!

Thank You.

Wheeling is a nice area. My ex was from the grove. Nice suburb with a good location. Its not Lake Bluff, but it still is pretty nice.

Of course, sometimes I contemplate moving to lakeshore east...but then driving would become a burden instead of a joy.

DelliReeus 01-09-2012 01:53 PM

Well it's just a decision me & my gf made, & I wanna go to a college in Cali for music business & production. Lately a lotta people have been telling me that Cali isn't all that, I'm not sure what to do. I've been planning to move somewhere warm in U.S. my whole life.

kenchan 01-09-2012 02:09 PM

climate wise socal is definitely nice. i say this from experience living there a few years. for me it's a great place to visit...and to live while single or no kids.

isn't there a nice music college in downtown chicago? or is it like it's nice and all but dont have the hook ups after college? anyway, good luck to school and etc.

brucelidat 01-09-2012 02:10 PM

I have HFCs, but got the resonated one as well as the 18" resonators on my CBE to minimize my noise level and draw less attention to myself. If you don't drive like an ***, though, you should be fine. Test pipes worry me though because of the smell which would be a much easier giveaway that there is something illegal going on under there.

I think your best solution is to just get a GTM supercharger kit. You'll want or run stock cats with that since it will kill HFCs and you'll be way faster than guys like me with just our breathing mods. quieter and faster...DO IT!!! :driving:
