The lastest since my accident.....

Well, today was my appointment with my orthopedic doctor. It's been almost 3 months since my accident and finally I got some good news: I've been cleared to return to work full time starting Tuesday and I also have been cleared to begin weight bearing on the ol' left foot during physical training. (I also have to do a lot practicing "walking" over the weekend....my next P.T. appointment isn't until next Tuesday)

Let me tell ya, I had no idea how difficult this was going to be. I mentally can get myself to apply equal weight to both feet but I can't get myself to lift my left foot and put it back down a few inches away. I just have this horrible feeling something is going to "break" in my foot. Even tho the doctor said the scarring looks great and the x-rays that were done this morning are perfect, too.

I know this is all in my head and I'll get past it but I'll say this again: I'd trade a foot injury for a shoulder or wrist or arm injury any day of the week. (Not that I'd really want any of those, either) I'm beginning to really understand now why the nurses told me the day of the accident it will be anywhere from 6 months to a year before I'm fully healed.

I'm just glad to still be here to tell my story and that all others involved are, too! ;)

Glad you're going to be fine. Hope all your future stories you share with us will not involve any accidents!

I know exactly what you mean about being freaked out about walking again. I dislocated and broke my ankle in 3 places, had surgery (plate & 7 screws) and was in a cast for 6wks and 6wks of PT. Putting weight on it was a total mind over matter thing. I'm not sure if you broke it or not but I feel ya man! Don't worry once you start moving it around more it gets easier. Next thing you know you'll be pushing yourself more and more without even thinking about it.

Dude...the breaks actually heal stronger than the unbroken bone area. You've got nothing to worry about. If you break your foot again, it won't be in the same place.

The best way to get back to up to speed is to use it like mad. Take up running. I've got an old back injury that put me out of commission for a long time. Spine alignment is a f'd up. Best thing I ever did was start running again. Keep this in mind..It's you against your body. Make that sucker work for you!

If you're in pain, take ibuprofen before you start exercising. Don't skimp on the stretching before and especially after.

Good luck and get out there!

Thanks for the tips! So far I'm secure with standing on both feet from a sitting position. I know that's not much but yesterday I didn't even feel comfortable doing that.

Good to hear you're in healing up. Definitely use the foot as much as possible but don't be one of these tough guys who pushes through the pain and ends up in an even worse spot. Ask my left rotator cuff.
