Am I the only one with the bad clear coat?

So I've had my Black Z for one week now and of course birds have shat upon it. I wipe it off as soon as I see it, but I still have damaged clear coat pretty much everytime!! This seems ridiculous. Is this happening to other dark colored cars too or is my clear coat a reject?

I think Nissan's clear coat isn't particularly resilient to acids. I got some nasty spots on my G35 from tree sap that wouldn't come off and damaged the clear coat, yet my crappy Dodge truck was unaffected.

My car too, bug guts ate through my zaino and i believe the clear coat.

The indentation it left was pretty bad. I know not to leave "yellow" bug guts on my car for to long.

Thin

I think its too thin. I caught a rock doing 40mph the other day that really gave my hood hell. Nice flake missing, all the way to bare metal. A really good wax job is necessary.....dont care how new the car is. I wish there was a place around here I could have a polymer coat put on my car. But, no Autobacs here in South TX.
Not too mad though, just patiently waiting for a carbon bonnet to come out for this thing.

the poops burns it and it's there to stay

I believe nissan totally skipped the clear coat process on my 2012 roadster.
Worst paint job i've ever seen.
I WONDER IF NISSAN HAS A COMPLAINT DEPT?

I had 2 saturns, one ruby red and one black, a 2008 and a 2009, the clearcoat is awesome, numerous unwashed bird droppings, dead bugs and 1 trip thru the carwash and their like new. this 2012 Nissan I swear, has no clear coat. At less than 200 mile on the odometer it has chips on the hood from teeny stones while my other, much okder cars have none. Nice car but I will never buy a nissan again. No use having a beautiful car that you have to keep garaged or covered. I wonder if Nissan is aware of this problem.

Nissan's paint is horrendous. My 10' black Maxima had some birdshit on it that completely burned the paint in two spots. The paint even on the Z is terrible. Even on their most expensive car you would expect the GTR to have a decent paint job, but even that is just as bad. Im going to have to have a professional or a body shop try to correct this. Ugh it pisses me off.

no you're not alone... I spilled some soda on my car during lunch and washed it off like 5 minutes later. Some clear coat damage occurred

MelloYello 05-23-2012 05:57 PM

First off, for the record I love the car. That being said, I'll have to agree with everyone here that the paint leaves something to be desired. It is not long after a wax that water sheets across the car. Oddly enough, my wife's 2001 Altima with 150k+ miles seems to have a better quality paint job than my Z. Her car sees far less wax and much more tree sap than mine and water continues to bead on it. Hopefully, the paint department is the only place Nissan has cut the budget:rolleyes:

I bought an extra 7 year Policy so that if my Black 370Z gets bird damage due to poo-poo, they have to paint the whole hood...or roof.

It is included in my 7 year Bumper to bumper policy...

Now I know that it is going to be worth it...

kenchan 05-23-2012 06:17 PM

yah, even my G's paint is harder than the Z. they are both brilliant silver and same paint code, yet they are a slightly different shade. it's pretty ridiculous how soft the paint is.

on a black, definitely use polymer sealant and keep a good coat of LSP on top... everything shows up on dark solid colors.

bird crap can be very acidic based on wat the bird ate. i recommend you also look into doing a full clearbra if things are really bad. :)

I learned a longtime ago when buying the 370z to get a clearbra asap 350z too. I got mine done when she had under 50 miles on her, 6.6 miles when she was delivered, and i drove her home taped with painters tape. My clearbra installer told me he could not find a nick or scratch in the area i had the clearbra applied, or any other area because i had detailed her before taking her to him, to remove any possible swirls and scratches before the Clearbra was applied. Good thing my girl stays garaged, and she only comes out on weekends. I do check her every weekend after a day of fun in her, just in case i have to remove any bird bombs or tree sap. Good thing i haven't started on the JD Power and associates survey i received (rotten *ss Post Office worker stole my dollar from the envelope). I'll make sure to include the paints thin clear coat used on all 370z's as a needed area of improvement for Nissan.

Less paint+less clear coat=lighter car...

I heard that about the paint issue too, that's a good way to look at it. For the record, my paint is perfect so far for a factory paint job (only a little orange peel on the rear bumper, but all factory paints have orange peel, could wet sand but clear is too thin to risk it).
