CF-anyone else find this ironic?
Lemme say I'm not a CF hater or anything - might do a few pieces myself.
But don't you find it ironic that we overlay / wrap / cover all this stuff with a product that it's main advantage is weight savings? So we're making stuff heavier...with a product that is designed for lightness. Now I know it's all about aesthetics and copying racing cars (where it is used for weight), but I just find it funny. And I guess the other advantage is strength - I'm sure it's important to have super strong console covers. Just curious as to if anyone else has noticed this? |
It's a little funny but then again it doesn't matter one bit on street cars. Everyone just does it for the look. If done right it can look nice. If done wrong it just looks tacky.
I actually tip my hat to the guys that aren't just putting some overlays with double-sided tape on, but are actually sending parts out to get professionally wrapped. It just looks so much cleaner that way. |
i find it more ironic that some guy in a honda pickup truck is posting here.

I agree...I do have to say, CF Overlays and add on pieces are lame. Either get the whole Piece done in CF or dont do it at all. It make a nice Z look ghetto with some POS overlay.

im a fan of dressing up my car a little bit to my liking so i dont mind CF bits or overlays if done with taste. it's basically like painting your bits but it's done with simulated CF or real CF weaves. who the hell's kidding themselves thinking that a few lbs is going to make any difference on a street driven car anyway. :rofl2: if im going to be racing my car on the track it would be setup VERY differently. |

Carbon fiber has a farm E I E I O
And on his farm he has CF E I E I O With an overlay here and plastic junk there... here carbon there plastic blah blah blah.... In other words... who cares. I wouldn't put overlay junk on my whip no matter how nice it looked. Play the part parts are corny but I won't knock anyone who does because its not my car payment. Hey if some dude wants to wrap his part in CF isntead of using the real thing and adding weight??? So be it. But I wouldn't do it. E I E I O... lol. |
OP, some people just like the way it looks. You just need to think of it more as just an aesthetic "pattern" rather than something functional. The case for my iPhone has a CF back, I hardly believe it's going to make it any lighter or faster....Better yet, think of it the same as you would if something were painted as Kenchan mentioned. You may not like a certain color, but doesn't mean someone else can't like it. As far as making it heavier, that's true, but kind of meaningless... CF, even the fake overlay stuff is really, really light. You'll add like a pound or two, if that. This arguement over real vs fake is kind of moot to begin with. Just about everything in the car is a synthetic man made material. Heck, the leather seats and alcantara aren't technically "real"...
I guess what I'm trying to say is lighten up. It can look downright cheesy sometimes, but so what! |
Plasti-dip is the new fake CF :roflpuke2:

It's not ironic, bro. Science has already proved CF overlays add horsepower.

People do it to make it look different from others? More unique? :ugh2:

I think CF is really ugly. It reminds me of the fad from about 25 years ago when the ricers wanted to "white out" everything on their cars. But, as they say, to each his own.

I'm not a CF hater either, and I bet most all of those who do use it are doing so for the "look", not the weight savings. |

Theres a Guy local to me with a White Nismo. He decided to use some shitty CF wrap on his spoiler, Roof and front bumper If i remember right. It looked terrible. I couldnt understand why someone would take a 40kish Z and add something that looked worse than Brittney Spears' Vag to a Nice car.

It's all about personal taste and making your car look a little different.
I don't like gloss-coated cf or black rims, but there are plenty of guys who do. Then again, I'm sure my mods aren't everyone's idea of good taste either. If we all liked the same thing, it would be a pretty boring world. I've got to admit to being amused by the whole Plasti-Dip phenomena. For years, the cheaper versions of cars came with black door handles, mirrors, and bumpers. Now guys are doing just that to their 40k+ Z's. Again, personal choice. |
