My Z Did Something Magic: It let me text message hands free

While driving yesterday, my cell phone vibrated and then the navigation voice said "You have a text message. Do you want to hear it?" What the hell? So, I said "Yes". The navigation voice then read me the message and asked, "Do you want to reply?"

I said, "Yes."

It then said, "Start your message now (or something like that)".

I dictated the message. The voice asked me if I want to send it and I agreed. The message was sent.

I have a 2010 touring sport with nav. My phone is a Windows phone with the new Mango operating system update. Before the phone update the car did not do anything like this. All it did was answer and make phone calls. Clearly, there is a closer connection between the phone and the nav system. In any case this functionality blew me away. It's worth having a Windows phone just to do this. It's very cool.

I don't even have a CD player... Nav... or bluetooth.

Both my car and my iPhone 4 suck.

FML.

edconline 10-28-2011 02:56 PM

So your Z turn into Siri?

leighspped 10-28-2011 03:19 PM

Siri works great on my s5. The Z doesn't have Bluetooth but I thing it would work the same.

My Samsung Vibrant has this function that works through bluetooth. It is a car mode, and it reads incoming text to you through bluetooth and you can say and send your own text message by voice. I never use it though, my car is generally too loud for the sensitive microphone to cleanly pick up my voice haha. Damn you FI exhaust and HFCs!

Strangler 10-28-2011 09:43 PM

I don't even use the phone blue tooth option thing in my car. I'm not sure if its my phone or not but the signal is HORRIBLE whenever I use the car's blue tooth

Boring. Make a thread when your Z gives you a handy, that will be something worth getting the Touring for. :ugh2:

Hahahahahahaaaaaa:icon18:

Well my Z told me to pick up my clothes at the cleaners yesterday. Oh no wait? That was my wife in the passenger seat. Lol. My Z is my alone time or time with my wife. I ain't tryin to talk or message on phones. But I rather people use these types of features than do the idiotic things they do on the road while manually texting and driving.

Lemers 10-29-2011 11:53 AM

Are you sure your wife's nickname isn't Nav?

:inoutroflpuke:

No, no. You get the touring with the goodies so you can lure a passenger who will do that for you.

No it isn't but I might start calling her NAV, she has passenger seat driver syndrome. Lol.... :roflpuke2:

I noticed this happening as well with my Windows Phone (Dell Venue Pro) and my 2010 Z. It must be something specific with the Bluetooth protocol used in Mango because I do not get the same functionality with my iPhone 4S.

Yea a very expensive aftermarket add-on. The expense of Twin Turbos would look minuscule in comparison...

Mango has over 500 improvements over the initial winphone release (7.0). I am constantly amazed at the surprises I find. The latest is Lync 2010 app. It allows me to get and make calls from my office phone on my winphone. Add the Outlook functionality and my office is now anywhere I have my phone. Unfortunately, my Z won't read me emails, but getting voice texting is really cool.

Nope.

Alpine ida-x305s digital media receiver.

AM/FM, iPod/ USB and Pandora stream

That's all I got!

In all fairness, I owned my Z for 6 months and never put a CD in it. AUX + iPod FTW.

Nismo89 12-21-2011 04:18 PM

i actually forgot about my CD player in mine lol BUT i do actually have a CD in it lol (Skillet: Awake) lol

It does. I can have Siri work for me through the bluetooth on my Sport Touring non-NAV.

I can get Siri working as well but only if I hold down the home button on the phone itself.

What I would really like to see Nissan do, is allow me to activate Siri by pressing the Phone button on the steering wheel instead of it activating the very sub-par Voice Command System built into the Z. It would also be cool if Siri would automatically come up after a text message arrives and offer to read it to you instead of having to manually initiate the process.

RoadZter 12-22-2011 09:18 PM

This is my first Z. Gone are the days when a car just took you from point a to point b! Although it did say "your lights are on" and "your door is ajar". LOL!
