Faint whine sound under throttle?

It's random but there are times when I'm accelerating and there's this faint whine sound coming from the motor. Closest thing I can associate it with is like a supercharger whine. Anyone experience this before?

Mandingo 09-09-2011 08:48 PM

I don't hear a whine at all. Check for a leak in the intake?

Masa 09-09-2011 09:02 PM

ECU whine? It was a known issue with the 09's but you have a '10... I thought it was resolved with that year.

I get it too and I have an 11. I Don't mind the sound one bit though or any other sounds the car makes makes it feel like more of a raw car.

Rooskey 09-09-2011 10:20 PM

I have the same sound only when casually accelerating in the lower rpms. Mostly just when cruising and driving normall. When I let off the accelerator it goes away. Its kinda like a ring and pinion whine..

Skeeterbop 09-09-2011 10:22 PM

I notice it here and there. Usually only if i turn the volume way down. At normal listening levels it's unnoticable for me.

Alternator maybe. I know some GM alternators sound like little superchargers under there. Maybe your ears are very sensitive to that frequency and that is what you are hearing.

UNKNOWN_370 09-10-2011 04:13 PM

I've heard it too. Its not like the ecu whine that has been described in the past. Its not electronic. It sounds more like forced induction. It sounds pretty kool to me.

TongMan 09-10-2011 06:25 PM

It's probably the supercharger.

shaun66 09-10-2011 09:41 PM

I can hear it to with the windows down, it sounds like race car.

Red__Zed 09-10-2011 11:18 PM

You sure it's not from the diff? The z's diff whines like a mother.

Possible only really hear it when I'm crawling around in a parking lot or accelerating super slow.

jpit 09-11-2011 11:36 AM

The slight whine from the engine area is coming from the throttle bodies. To confirm, put the car in neutral and see if the whining stops.

That's exactly how I was. I changed to redline and it helped a bunch. Still there due to the aggressive backlash settings Nissan sets.

Nissanboy 09-11-2011 01:23 PM

It's normal, it comes from the differential ring and pinion

Davey 09-11-2011 01:49 PM

Gear lash or whatever, no big deal.

Is this accurate? I haven't really opened the car up lately and when I did today, the car sounded like it was supercharged.

A slight whine came around 3k-7k thru my first 4 gears.

Only happened once or twice though.

bbowers825 08-14-2013 01:11 PM

Saw the thread, wanted to make a supercharger joke. Am I to late?

Thank you guys for your insightful answers

luigi90210 08-14-2013 03:00 PM

Its normal, my Z has it and just about every other Z I have been in have it.

jburke26 08-14-2013 03:42 PM

Yup, I hear it all the time. I would suspect the reason some people can not hear it is their ears are not as sensitive to that frequency for some reason or another or their cars are loud as ****! Can't wait for my FI exhaust so i can junk this stupid OEM exhaust.

Infidel 08-14-2013 03:53 PM

Power steering unit? You can hear those fords two blocks away.

LOL! You got that right.

UNKNOWN_370 08-14-2013 04:25 PM

It's the intake. Low humidity days where the air is feeding perfectly into the manifold. It gives off a low FI like sound. It happens more often when you modify the intake.

this is exactly what happened when i did the washer mod, now i dont even hear the drivetrain whine because the exhaust is so loud XD

i doubt it is the stock intake, the whine OP is probably talking about sounds like faint belt whine(kind of like a supercharger) that is coming from the rear drive axle and diff

intake noise is more like this(go to 29m41s)
