Finally hit 10,000 miles...going into storage for 2yrs

Yep, had the Z for one year, finally hit 10,000 this week and this coming weekend will mark the start of two years in storage. Not that I wanted to do that; the military has other plans for me, of which do not include driving my car. 730+ days can't be too long...

As everyone said, be safe out there.

but as for storing the car for 2 years. Why dont you just sell it? dont let it depreciate and then pick one up when you can after 2 years?

:iagree:

You could sell the car and put the money in a bank account to generate interests on that amount.. It would be a good investment and you would get some money back instead of losing because of depreciation as daisuke said..

When you come back you could buy another one (used or new) or even a next-generation Z if it's out by then..

best wishes..

it should will be paid off well before I get back. It will then retire as my daily driver and I will probably get something more practical to drive to and from work. Something like a juke or some other A to B car.

PapoZalsa 08-29-2011 08:06 PM

Mine is going to 2 yr and have half of that mileage. Mine is looking to be in the same boat.

BTW, thanks for your service!

mick 08-29-2011 09:10 PM

me too. i just reached 5k last sunday and i have had the car since Jan 2010 :)

FromG2Z 08-29-2011 10:12 PM

Thanks for your great service!

Had mine since last year, and only have 2k miles on it :)

red6spd 08-29-2011 10:15 PM

Wow 2 years, be safe. If you do a search you can find alot of ways to secure that car. A sit like that I think might require draining of most fluids, removal of wheels and put up on jack stands.

Take care of yourself man. I wouldn't be too surprised if I got orders to Korea in the near future (USAF). I'd probably put my car in storage as well if it was just a short tour. Two years is a long time for a car to not move though... I'd probably sell it or have it stored by professionals who can drive it only as necessary and perform scheduled maintenance. When I deployed last December I left my RX-8 with a buddy who flooded the engine :shakes head: so now in the future I'll just go professional, especially with my 370.

steveg78 08-30-2011 11:05 PM

Stay safe and thanks for your service, I've got some buddies that have done 4-5 tours at my base. It goes fast seeing them deploy and come back, settle-in at home like old times and then go back again.

As for the comment about banking the money for interest... Have you looked at interest rates on a savings account or CD lately? Nobody saves money to make interest unless you're putting away millions.

USINC97 08-31-2011 04:58 AM

Yup. Putting money in a CD or savings account won't even beat inflation / cost of living increases. If you really want to make your money work, put it in the market and spend a **** ton of time managing it... these days you can't even buy S&P index funds and think you'll be better off in 2 years...look at all the destroyed 401ks....

..just keep the car. It'll be that much better when you get home and it's waiting for you...

Stay safe! And thanks!

Edit: One good strat is you wanna hold for a few years, buy stocks in a company that doesn't move much (McDonalds, Bristol Meyers) and sell covered calls on it. You can do this from 401k accounts too...it's a pretty low risk strat and you get a nice premium paid out at the end of the expired option. Minimal time management too. Maybe a few hours at first to calc out a good setup, then minimal monitoring weekly.

11Thumper 08-31-2011 01:29 PM

As others have stated, be safe. Selling the car would indeed be the best idea for you as two years of payments and lowered value do you no good. A couple years back I purchased a motorcycle (a really nice used one too) from someone and right before I made an offer (typical negotiation) I asked why he was selling. He was in the Navy and being shipped out so I paid him full asking price. It surprised him a little and I expained why. He appreciated that and we still email once in a while. Luckily, he's doing well.

It wouldn't hurt to let people know that if you do sell the car.

370zgal 09-01-2011 10:31 AM

My husband takes care of our cars. I think he said it is not as simple as throwing a charger and car cover over it. I think there is a lot of work that has to be done prior to storage when you store a car for long periods of time. The 370 is a depreciating asset, not a collectable and can be replaced pretty easily. Selling it might be best for a 2 year deployment. Maybe invest the money saved into a dividend paying stock?

Best of luck to you.

Thank you for serving.

Sell it and buy a 400z when you come home in 2 years... nice welcome home present to yourself.

Well in reality we don't know the future of the Z. So he might want to keep it.

I'm keeping mine even if I go overseas for a few years. It will be paid off and less than 10K miles on it. ;)

MattP725 09-02-2011 10:12 AM

It was more a joke than anything but even if for some reason they stop with the 370z, they will still be pretty easy to come by in 2 years I'm sure.

How long it took the Z to come back after the 300ZX was taken of the market in the U.S.?

drew 09-02-2011 09:43 PM

Well there's no going back now, the car is in storage, hopefully this tropical storm in the gulf doesn't turn into something worse. I'm not that worried about the car, I'm more worried about losing my house.

I pressed the trip A/B reset button right when it hit 10k. The top number (10,000) is your total mileage, while the bottom number (0.0) is the trip A or B mileage. And as for the 80mph, I was on a highway

Take care and be safe..USAF here!!

Everyone is talking about how proud they are to have put so few miles on their car.. I have had mine about ten months and have put about 11,000 miles on it..More miles.. more enjoyment.. My brother had an expensive Porsche which he kept in the garage most of the time..brought it out one day and smashed it up...Now he drives the hell out of each and every one he buys..

Same here, got mine in march while on R&R and put 1200 on it in two weeks. Got back from deployment in June and I'm up to 7200 miles now with two 900 mile trips and a 1500 mile trip coming up soon.
