lost key fob
Im pissed. my key fob fell off of my key chain last night. Any ideas how much this is to replace? My spare does not work at all it will not even lock or unlock the doors. Is this just a dummy spare or should this spare be able to lock/unlock or start the vehicle. Thanks for the help.

Have you tried replacing the battery in the spare?
Should not be a dummy spare. If you put it in the slot it should work even if the battery is dead. If you can start the car, just replace the battery. All hear say/read as I have not tested a dead fog.
What's a dead FOG?:ugh2:
cool i'll check the battery. car wont start or anything luckily its in my garage with the windows down. im hoping its just that i thought it was weird even the lock or unlock buttons won't work.
Put it in the fobgina if you don't have a new battery...
man i feel like an idiot but how do you open this thing to put a battery in it.
i got it out ok gonna buy a new battery i'll see if it works..
Again, without the battery it should still work in here:

Ya that spare key is just doing nothing i replaced the battery inserted it in the "fobgina" :tiphat: and still it says no key. maybee that thing is bad. does anyone know how much a new key is? Can everyone else start there car with their spare fob, and does it lock or unlock. The guy i bought it from said it was a dummy maybee it just never woirked from the factory?
You should have gotten two functional fobs. There is no such thing as a 'dummy' fob from the factory. A new fob is going to cost you.....I have heard more than $200. You can have your spare fob reprogrammed to your ignition if is doesn't work. I am not sure how much the dealership will charge for that. If you are buying a new fob, they will have to program it for you. They may feel sorry for you and do them both at the same time.
Does the key inside your spare fob unlock your doors? Sounds like the PO gave you a fob for another car, or at least an unprogrammed one.
Sounds like you're going to have to tow the car to the dealership to get a new fob programmed. |
I wonder if there's anyway to ask the dealer to reprogram the key FOB? I mean, what if someone got a hold of your functional key fob and starts Z hunting and finds your car? They can take it out for a joyride or worse yet, chop shop?
I tried the actual key, it does unlock the door. You mean to tell me I would have to tow the car to the dealer just to have a fob programmed for it. With all the technology you would think they could do that without the car being there.. no? Also the car is still under warranty wouldn't that fob be covered if it never worked?
That's a really good ? OP. My knee jerk reaction would be that the fob is not covered. I'm sure interested to find out though.
When I bought my Z last week it only came with one fob. Dont know where it got lost along the way from the used dealer but anywho, the fob itself was like 130 and the "labor" or synching it up was another 70 or so. It came out to something about 215. Pretty stupid if you ask me.

so I called the dealership i have to have the car present to do that. how much b.s. is that. So now I have to get a tow truck to tow my car and scratch it all up just to get a f_____g key made. What ever happened to the day where u stick a key in the igntion and drive away.
I did find out too that metal tag is for the cut of the actual key inside the fob, it has nothing to do with the programming code. So what the best way to tow these cars so they don't get all scraped up? Flatbed?

So what's the point of the fobgina? We all heard it was to start the car when the fob battery dies.. but apparently not.

yes it came with the car, the key that slides out of it opens the door. it must have been programmed wrong. The guy i bought the car from said it never worked, thats why he thought it was a dummy key. I stopped at the dealer ship and bought a key. They will program them both for one price. He gave me the name of the tower that they use which he states has never had one problem with them. He has never seen damage from their tow. That made me feel better at least.
