I can think of 4 people off the top of my head that have had oil change problems from having other people do it. My aunt got the best deal when wal mart didnt put a filter back on tight. She wound up getting a new motor courtesy of them.

Only thing bad about doing it yourself is if a problem goes on with the motor you dont have proof of when your oilchanges were done and theyll throw it at you as a reason to getting out of covering the fix. had an rx-8 before this and luckily i keep every single document for my cars. motor died one day and they tried to say i didnt get my oil changes regularly. went and got my paperwork and shut them up :) had a brand new motor

Sounds like a lot of miss trust of the dealerships here.
had my first oil change a couple of weeks ago at the dealership
and everyone's right the guy that use to wash-em is now
changing the oil. for my second change i don't know what i will do.

with warranty work we have no choice.

oh i went with mobil 1.

[*] My personal favorite: Far too many stripped oil drain plugs from idiots who cannot discern foot pounds from "that feels about right," let alone use an actual torque wrench. You know you've been had when you look underneath your oil pan and see a shiny new oil drain plug (most likely oversized because the lot jockey used an air ratchet to speed-up your oil change in between his having to drive customers cars around. Whoops!).

From the 2009 Z Owner's Manual:

Oil filter tightening torque:
11 to 15 ft-lb
(14.7 to 20.5 N·m)

8. Clean and re-install the drain plug with a
new washer. Securely tighten the drain plug
with a wrench.
Drain plug tightening torque:
22 to 29 ft-lb

I wounder what if any they (dealer) uses to torque the oil filter? Anyway 11 ft/lbs and 22 ft/lbs is nothing. They can strip the drain plug or over tigthen the oil filter easy!

I know one time I was waiting for my Z at the dealership and the service manager came up and ask me if I could change the oil on one of the GTRs they had cuz all their other guys were busy. So I did.

of course it is, but I was just hitting on the fact that basically the lowest skilled person is changing your oil at dealerships.

haha i dont know about you guys but i like going to my mechanic. not for simple oil changes or whatever but whenever i go, standing beside the guy and making sure hes doing a good job, asking what and why hes doing certain things, its a good experience.
