Thinking a bout trading in 09 maxima for 370z
I have a 2009 maxima base model, with 21,500 miles.
Excellent condition. I'm looking to get a Black or dark silver 09 Touring+auto, or Base+auto 370z. What's the best possibility for both worlds you think? What should I aim for, for the maxima, and what could the 09 z be gotten for? Maxima is nice, but I'm single, no family, plus, the z is a slicker looking car. |
Try and sell the Max before you trade.

I'm hearing the overall TCO on z is a lot higher, everything from tuneups, to having to buy new tires a lot? What's a good guestimation for tire cost for Z? how often do they have to be swapped out, since they can't be rotated? |
Tires can cost anywhere from $200 each to $350 each depending on the brand and where you purchase. The summer tires last about 20,000 give or take, so roughly every two years. Insurance is gonna be higher than the Maxima also. Overall, the maintenance cost is roughly the same if you intend on doing some of the work yourself. Some dealers charge around $90 for an oil change using Ester oil for example. "Tune ups" will be the same as the Max, but any sort of modifications like an exhaust upgrade will usually be more expensive. The little things tend to add up and your pockets will be empty before you know it with this car. It's all worth it to me though. You only live once, right?

Do what I did. Keep the Maxima as a daily driver and buy a Z for fun.
|
if you do decide to sell, get a free appraisal at carmax. their offers are usually pretty good especially if your car is stock.

Well, I know carmax is the quickest approach to getting a Z, but I hear they sell cars at a higher price then getting a used equivalent elsewhere. Sure I may be getting a good deal on the tradein, but if they typically sell cars at a marked up rate, doesn't this negate what you are getting for their "good/decent" trade in offer?
http://www.carmax.com/enus/view-car/...i=5&id=7418944 - this is an example Seems overpriced? for 16k miles etc...... I'm comparing it to the "sticky" thread that has msrp/invoice prices for 09's etc. |
Step 1, find said Z you are looking for (doesn't have to be at carmax)
Step 2, negotiate deal for Z at said location Step 3, go to carmax and sell your car Step 4, go back to dealer with cash in hand (if any left over after paying off your loan) to put down on the Z. It's that simple. You don't have to buy your Z at carmax to sell your maxima at carmax. The only way you will be screwed is if you owe more than trade in value on your maxima. Then you are stuck trading in wherever you are buying the Z so that they can roll over the negative equity into the new Z loan. Then again if you are upside down on your maxima I don't recomend getting into a Z at this time. |

For what I owe, and what KBB says for "private party", I have about $9,000 in equity, or $7500-$8000 equity for trade in. Just trying to get sound advice, since it seems Z's hold their value well, as do maximas. I can't tell what's a good price for a used 09 auto base Z, or touring auto Z(09) etc. |

What's a good reference to go against Carmax's offer.
Simply KBB? etc? |
yah, i used KBB's 'GOOD' price if your car is in excellent condition.
make sure your car is stock before you take it in for the best appraisal...although if you bring the stock parts with they will give you some money for them. :) |

Good $23,775 Fair $21,425 Those are the figures I got back from KBB for mycar, for "trade in value", not private party sell. Here is private party value: Excellent $26,790 Good $25,390 Fair $23,290 I owe about $13k on the maxima still, so hopefully I'll have roughly $10k equity if they give the trade in good value. Will chop off a good amount towards the Z. |
yep and also remember that you save on sale tax cause you only pay for the difference. :)

+1 rep to everyone who helped this guy. Feeling generous today :D

The last factor in this debate is financing........
I have 0% 60 months on the Maxima........... Anything I get won't even touch that. The cheapest rate I can find is at a local credit union of 3.9% (if you qualify for the best rate) Any ideas on financing? Sucks that nissan doesnt do 0% 60months on 370'z ;) |
if you cant buy the car cash, do the 3.9 for now and work to pay it off early. :)
|
better off dont buy it, car is too new and you will get taken to the cleaners on your 09.

No half *** salesman is going to "take me to the cleaners" I know how their game works. I've seen what carmax sells 09 maximas for, with equivalent miles, ive seen what they sell for on ebay as well with equivalent miles. I know what kbb states as acceptable ranges for private party, or tradein, I already have a figure that I won't go below. If they don't agree, I'll tell them it's not my problem, it's money you aren't going to make, etc..and if they get frustrated, they can drown in their own swill. |
I kind of made the same switch and you will love it man! Had a 2010 Maxima, but it got totaled in an accident then I went with a Z. I got my used 09 Touring auto for $26k which was a good price, but I think prices may have gone up since then. Good luck man
|
yeah okay, you know the game alright. kbb is useless and overstates everything, dealership uses blackbook. carmax and other dealership are in the resale business, you think they will bother flipping the car for a 500 dollars margin.

How did you get an 09 touring auto for 26k? Just curious :D |

I'm receiving guidance from a Finance professor who I am friends with at a local university, whose son is a car salesman at a mercedes dealership is also helping my own approach to this etc. The only problem this day is finding good financing. I got the maxima when Nissan offered 0% 60 months on the maxima. Lowest today is probably 3.9% from a credit union etc. |
the 3.9% vs. 0% is less than 2000, you are always better off looking for the best deal.
economy might be down, but cars are still being purchased. you can definitiely find good deals on z, but you might have overvalued your car too, almost like a sports team overvalue their own players. with all that said, used car market are strong, you should still be able to get 22 or even 23k for it, 25k+ sounds like a prayer. just for hahas, carsdirect list a 2011 maxima new for 28k.... |

Also, just noticed that you're in Huntsville. One of my friends just moved to there from VA. Look up Red__Zed, he can help you out with some stuff regarding the Z once you get it. I send him all my questions :icon17: |
how about tha_alabama just buy red_zed's car? LOL :D
|

I'm just curious Alabama why didn't you get the Z in the first place instead of the Max? |

Back then, there wasn't 0% finance for the 370z Nothing more to it then that. Decided I would wait a few years until the price dropped $3k-$6k on most of em. Don't get me wrong, Max is a nice car, but straight up makes me feel like a family **** toting 3 kids..... |

Heh, two vehicles......I used to have two at once, but had to give up a defender D90, repairs were killing me, so I am sticking with one car for now. Memories......... http://photos.ecarlist.com/Cx/wV/1Y/.../Wh/eQ_640.jpg Looked just like that one. |
