Buh-dat-dut-dut-dut??

I was driving home with my windows down and while backing into the driveway I hear *buh-DAT-dut-dut-dut* as I engaged my clutch.

I pulled out of the driveway and forwards, backwards..makes no difference.

Is this normal? If not...WTH is it??

FromG2Z 06-09-2011 08:24 PM

happy.... wish I could help. Could you maybe record the audio? Hard to decipher sounds with text....

happytheman 06-09-2011 08:30 PM

I know right? I was thinking "now how am I going to describe that" while scratching my head. Thanks for being the first to step up and tell me I'm being a typical Midas customer! :)

I'll try to record it tomorrow so you fan hear!

happytheman 06-09-2011 08:57 PM

Ok..here's the clip. I just went ahead outside and shot this. You can hear it really well the first two times (0:03 & 0:09) I depressed the clutch, and then a couple of more times at the end (0:50 & 0:57).

Please pardon the wind noise. :(

Yeah i get that sound alot if i quickly disengage the clutch at low rpms

happytheman 06-09-2011 09:03 PM

Hmm, is that normal then?

I believe it is just chatter when disengaging the clutch to quick... I have expierienced it a couple times.

Armonster 06-09-2011 09:39 PM

When I first got my car it did that (clutch chatter) whenever I would press the clutch in while in first gear. I learned to avoid it by depressing the clutch more smoothly. From what I have read on here, it's not something to worry about.

Rone 06-09-2011 09:45 PM

I got the same thing all the time when I started driving the Z, but it never happens when the wife drives. I guess you gotta be gentle with it.

WhiskeyHotel 06-09-2011 09:46 PM

That's the sound I get if I disengage the clutch under a slight load. There's a slight tension that is suddenly released, causing ocsillations in the drive train. Do you have synchro-rev on?

happytheman 06-09-2011 09:48 PM

Interesting. Well if this is normal I suppose I wont worry about it then. :)

Yes SRM is on.

I sometimes get that noise but only crawling such in 1st gear (~5mph as in traffic) and suddenly engaging the clutch really quickly.

My car is a MY11 with 4100 miles on it and judging by the others who posted before me - most likely nothing to worry about.

Yep, that's EXACTLY what's going on! Ok, now I'm feeling a little better now! Whew!

SP00LN 06-09-2011 10:16 PM

I was nervous too when I first got my Z, but after research here, completely normal. I'm just smoother on the clutch while crawling in 1st.

jaedub 06-10-2011 12:10 AM

If you heard buh-DAT-dut-dut-dut, then thats normal. But if you hear DAT-DUH-DAT-DAT-KA-BOOM!, then thats not normal

chops 06-10-2011 12:15 AM

thats just the infamous clutch clunk. normal

KillerBee370 06-10-2011 01:22 AM

Sounds like clutch chatter OR....

You might have these things too close to the ground...

:icon18:

I just might become so concerned that I spill my scalding coffee in my lap!

Seriously though..it's likely that I would not be able to reproduce that one for you all to hear!

Davey 06-10-2011 08:05 AM

Unloading the drivetrain like that, I got a clunk in my old Z, too. Especially if you are coasting to a stop in 2nd and let the RPM dip really low before you disengage the clutch quickly, you will hear it.

When the car is good and hot, I hear some kind of chattering if I try to take off gently/don't give it enough gas when I let the clutch out which I understand is "normal" too.

Finally, if I am crawling along in 2nd at 1500rpm and gently step on the gas I hear what sounds like a quieter version of the clutch chatter, also only when hot. Although it almost sounds like an exhaust leak, I think it's very faint chatter.

I can't reproduce either of those last two on a quick drive when it's cold, I have to take it out and get it really hot, drive it for an hour, etc.

Never heard either of those on my 350Z, but I've seen people describe those as "normal" too.

These transmissions are just noisy I guess.

FromG2Z 06-10-2011 08:35 AM

yeah Happy, I think I have heard that (form of it) before. I think it also happens when crawling from a stop in 1st or 2nd, and releasing the clutch too quickly. I believe I responded to a thread on this some time in the past.
