Should I put my Z in storage again or sell?
 
I purchased my car Mar 2010 and had it delivered directly to me here in Germany. Then in July 2010 I deployed and had to put my car in storage for 8 months. Now I find out that Korea is next so taking my Z is out of the question. After Korea I hope to end up in Ohio. The queston is should I store my Z while in Korea and have it when I get back or sell it and shop for a new ride? By the time I return my car will be 3 years old and have been in storage for half of it. Only 7400mi currently. I love my Z, it handles great and can be used to its full potential here in Germany. I paid cash for the car so there is no payment to get rid of. If I keep the Z I plan on dropping $20k-25k into a FI build. I have not decided TT or SC yet. I wil take any advice you have to offer. Storage or Sell??

I would keep it and do the FI build unless you no longer want it and want to move on to something else

Your talking a lot of money here. Your are atleast $30k into the purchase of the car and talking another $20k. Sell the car and bank the money you make and see what is available in a year. You can look into the Porsche overseas military purchase program and get a great deal on a cayman.

yah, but in korea cayman will cost a lot more money than in ohio, no?

if you do keep it, send it back to the US ahead of time. Have a shop throw the FI build on there while your in Korea. Then when you return it will already be done.

Being that its the shop i use, i would of course say have z1 do the work :p

Overseas car purchase has changed a lot. There are a lot of companies in Korea/Germany and other places that you can buy a car thru.

Just do a little of homework, I know AAFES has a dealer and I believe BMW too in Korea.

AAFES deals in fords and Cryslers
BMW, Volvo, and Porsche have their own purchase programs through authorized military sales dealers
Other companies do other bands as well but usually cost around invoice

Most of these programs are nonhaggle, made to order, delivered in the states to the location of your choice, prices are set at US prices with a "discount".

Now the other question. Why can't you take it to Korea? The car is paidoff so no bank permission needed. Military will ship 1 car overseas for free. I don't believe Korea has any crazy import laws on SOFA sponsored individuals like Japan did. Only thing I can think of is that they are still pulling the E6 and below can't drive. But I thought that went away when they started letting dependants go.

i would sell the Z before the '12 comes out. youll be able to get a good price for you '10 now +youll have the option to purchase a '12 if you like the updates, or get a used one with similiar miles to the one you have now. You might even be able to get it for cheaper then what you sell yours for now.

If he is going to Kunsan he cant bring a car....but if it's Osan I also thought that they lifted the e-6 and below can drive rule. you better check into that!

Another factor: We don't know how strongly the general public will react to the Japanese Fukiyama problem. A 2010 (or 2009) is clearly outside the danger zone, meaning it may depreciate less.

Today's reporting said auto sales for Toyota was down in May 33%, Honda 22%, Nissan 9%. Most of that, according to general reporting, is because of parts shortages. There has not yet been an analysis of the public's reluctance to buy cars which may have some parts from radioactive dead zones. But you can be sure this will build in the months ahead, especially now that so many square miles of Japanese land have become worse-contaminated than Chernobyl.

So, if you hope to keep a fine example of Japanese/French car engineering at its pinnacle, your Z will always be there. Selling your car now makes sense if you have something better to invest in, but even foreclosed real property remains iffy in the relative short term.

Normally I would say don't sell your Z but you have a pretty unique situation. In this case I think you should sell it. You can have that money build interest while you are gone. If and when you make it back to the states, you can always buy another one. I'm sure there will be people out there with very low mileage well maintained Zs for sale. Mine is almost a year old and it only has 4k miles.

Some people on this forum are already foreseeing the end of the Z. So you may want to hold on to it.

I find myself in such a similar predicament, Korea and a Z not even a year old. Except that I will be there for two years vs. one.

I have been tagged for Osan. Yes E-6 and below can drive with Commanders approval but...since that approval cannot be optained until after arrival shipping of POVs is not authorised. Atleast that is what I am being told.

Usually the commanders approval involves some sort of hardship or work requirement

I would sell. Your gonna be in korea for 3 years but the car will be in storage for half that? Why wouldn't it be in there the full 3 years? By that time im sure there will be an even better z. If you really miss it you could prob get a good used one. But yeah bank that money. You wont have storage fees.

Read the OP again. He's going to korea for 1 yr. He's been in germany before that and stored it when he deployed. By the time his 1 yr in Korea is up the car is 3 yrs old and been stored for 1.5 of it.

Also depends if is an accompany or un unaccompany tour. However I don't think to many people want to take the Z to Korea.

The traffic is terrible and the koreans drive like mad crazy people. Better to get a korean made car over there if you can, also the labor in case it breaks down would be cheaper.

BTW, if is only 1 yr tour I would leave the car in storage. I know is hard but I left another car that I had almost three year in storage, but it was in my garage and I drove when I came back in mid-tour leave. But I don't know the OP storage situation.

OSAN, and from what I have heard and read, E-6 can drive with commanders approval. Me personally, I am taking my mountain bike. I am looking forward to not having to deal with parking, traffic, door dings etc.

Kunsan onbase parking wasn't bad. And it kinda a small town so traffic and streets weren't that bad. Osan is a different story though a lot more traffic. The highways weren't bumper to bumper either. Japan has a lot worse traffic. Small narrow streets rush hour 24/7. I was at kunsan in 05-06 and saw my first 05 mustang GT there that belonged to one of the airman.
