Lyin' about gas mileage.
So I pull in to a local hand wash car wash this morning and the car in front of me is a very nice 350Z in the "purple" color with very nice aftermarket wheels, 305's on the back like me. He's a fairly nice guy and we start talking about our Z's. He finally asks me what kind of gas mileage I get, and I gave him my stock answer that I really don't pay close attention to it because It's not why I bought a sports car, but I then told him that the few times I have checked it on the highway that I got about 28 mpg. He frowns and says that he is averaging 36 mpg on the highway and that there must be something wrong with my Z. Now I know that that 36 mpg is simply not true, but I didn't argue with him. Why do people tell such tall tales about gas mileage? Are they trying to impress others? Anyway, I always find it comical when this happens.

That is a flat out lie unless the wheels were super light and he stripped the whole interior.
|
he must have special ordered the 4 cylinder version that was available
as an addition option :bowrofl: |
I'm going to take a wild guess and say that the guy doesn't actually calculate his gas mileage. He probably also doesn't fill the car the same way every time. Simple math is involved, so that knocks out quite a few people.
I had an '05 350 and I averaged between 19 and 20 for the mixed driving that I do. The best I ever got was on a long trip which was just shy of 28. It would have probably been a little higher, but I can't bring myself to drive like I'm in quicksand. |
He may not be running on all 6 cylinders
|
You can actually get 36+ mpg on the 370z if you drive 55 mph
|
I heard he only drives downhill...

Its possible if he is only driving downhill and coasting :)

Some people just like feeling as if they are the king of the castle and try to one up others like this guy. Sad but it is really his loss, I wouldn't lose any sleep over it personally.

Maybe he tows it every where. :p
|
Maybe he is referring to the instantaneous MPG reading when you let off the gas after acceleration...:roflpuke2:
|
Poor people in ecnoboxes often brag about mpg....where I really don't care. Even my Fit with me driving only gets 20-22mpg or something. I redline the crap out of the car all the time. :D I didn't buy the fit for mpg... just utility and im into boxy MT cars and coupes. :p
|
I guess he was going off what the computer in his car tells him, which is inaccurate. People are stupid and tell lies all the time.
|
I averaged 36 cruising at 55mph on part of my way home from the dragon today. If you cruise at 55, you should do about the same.
He was likely exaggerating though. |
It's possible. My z06 gets 26mpg on the highway, but if I go even slightly down hill it reads 29-30. The computer read 25.6 when I manually calculated 26.02, so if the 370z owners commute or the one time he measured it was a few degrees down hill I can see an honest 36 mpg. I measure my mileage coming and going over the same stretch of road to average out the UPS and downs for this reason.

36 miles per imperial gallon :D
|
Doesn't that mean you kind of drive your Z like a pussy though? I'm not sure I'd brag about what would have to be hypermiling a sports car. I just cracked 30 mpg for the first time ever on a 360 mile road trip, and that was doing 70 ish on cruise control. I can see 34 max if I was doing about 60
|
If you guys were talkin about HP, he'd have 100+ more
1/4 miles a full second less 0 to 60 under 4 seconds BLUF: he never comes in second to anyone. |

This sh*t just went from mission impossible to mission freakin’ insanity.

People lie because they in general are idiots. Nowadays social interaction is a lost art. People do not know basics anymore. Simple stuff you learn in the cub scouts. Be Kind, Curtious, Clean..... forgot the rest. I deal with lying douchebags that just make **** up out of the blue..... Sad but you just cant argue or enlighten ingnorant people.

A momentary blip on the MPG read out or downhill only confuse the issue. MPG to me is determined by filling up the tank, driving a certain distance then refilling the tank, dividing, miles driven by gals used, determining the answer.
The only way I'd get 36 MPG is if I filled up twice and pretended it was only one fill up like the 350Z driver. |
A little comment on our "Z" fuel tank, anybody noticed, after filling full tank, the 1st Q of petrol can go 180km,after that the level will drop quickly,so far the max i can go is about 550km,is our fuel tank, top part much bigger.??
|
haha, yeah the first "dot" on my fuel gauge stays on for 50 miles, then the rest only stay on for 25 miles. That first 1/16th of the fuel tank must be twice as big as the rest :ugh2:

Probably not too good with the maths

It used to be people would lie about the money they make or their sexual conquests. I guess in this day and age it is mileage that gets people all puffed up. Tragic. Shoot me now.
