High pitch whine

Without starting your car, hit the starter button twice to turn on all the electronics. I am hearing a distinct high pitched whine in this mode. I haven't left it in this position for longer than about 30 seconds to see how long this will last, possibly indefinitely. Has anyone else heard this? I remember reading a while back in the G37 threads that some were experiencing something similar to this, don't know if this is the same thing or not. I have a base w/sport BTW, no Nav.

Yes, I hear the high pitched wine. I thought it was my wife at first :rofl2:, but after concentrating, I was able to block her out and actually hear the wine you're talking about. Sounds electronic and I only hear it at idle speeds with the radio off..after that, the road noise covers it up.

You know, I have been waiting for the girlfriend/wife reference since I posted this :rofl2:

I can't hear it when the engine is running, but it is annoying. My hearing is still good, and high pitched sounds that are continous give me a headache. I wonder what it is?

Well I have really bad ears from working with airplanes for 4 years so I never got to hear it, though my girlfriend complains it about all the time. She said it gives her a headache. :<

Forrest 04-18-2009 04:55 AM

my brother heard it too, then after he pointed it out, i also can hear it now hehe.

Anatoray 04-18-2009 05:03 AM

Do you all have the same base sport configuration? My touring + nav has a very faint hum, not so much a whine, but I believe I know what kind of sound you are describing. It's similar to the high pitched whine that tube TVs give off, right?

Or the high pitched electrical whine overhead lights, that are on a dimmer, can give when dimmed.

G37s have had this since they came out, and appears no acknowledgement ot fix from Nissan/Infiniti:

Ringing sound inside car - MyG37

I hear it too. I had been meaning to track it down, but never got around to it. It's coming from either deep in the dash, or in the engine bay. The time I notice it most, is when I shut down the engine, because it lingers for a couple of seconds and the dies off in an ugly-sounding way.

Yep, same here. If you always start your car straight up, and never just turn on the accessories (two clicks of the start button), the engine will tend to drown it out.

Update

I have isolated what I am hearing, it's coming from the engine bay, under the engine cover. I noticed when I rolled the windows up it was less pronounced. Got outside the car and could hear it coming from the engine bay, raised the hood and voila, it's emanating from under the engine cover.

This jives with what I've heard. I notice it parking at home in my garage. I usually have the window rolled down when I pull in, and then when I shut off the engine I can hear it distinctly for a second or two, then it dies (it doesn't just end, it *dies* heh).

Same here. I am not the engine guru you are by any means. What do you think it is, electronic ignition, fuel injection?

my wife and i notice the high pitch whine yesterday sitting at a light. thought it was coming from the radio but we turned it off and it was still there. very annoying.

OMGWTFBBQ 04-18-2009 04:44 PM

Are you guys talking about the whine that comes from the ballasts for the HID bi-xenon headlights? If so, then that's normal. All HID ballasts give off a high pitched whine.

If not, then I don't know. Sorry.

No, this is coming from under the engine cover.

Mine does it too, but doesn't bother me in the least. But the rattle from the rear hatch is driving me insane!

Is it actually coming from the hatch? I have seen another post remarking about the tail light sqeaking. When I wax the car, the rear bumper makes creaking noises as the bumper mashes/temporarily sticks against the substance behind it, foam maybe?

Yeah I've heard that squeak in the rear too, it's the bumper cover squeaking against the styrofoam beam that sits behind it (between the bumper cover and the hard parts of the car).

Well you know how rattles are.....I'm 90% certain it's from the hatch. This week I plan on getting back there and having my wife drive the car so I can hopefully pin it down. If I have any luck I'll let you know.

RCZ 04-18-2009 08:04 PM

the fuel pump usually whines....might very well be what you are talking about.

It's not the hatch..I thought the same thing. Look for my other post regarding the rattles. It's coming from the locking mechanism for the fuel door. It's located behind the right rear panel.

Since I insulated this, I've been rattle free.

I agree - that's almost certainly what it is. I'm not sure what all the whining is about.

DIGItonium 04-19-2009 12:38 PM

Are you guys referring to the whine when you start up in ACC? Do you hear the whine for a couple of seconds when you go back to OFF?

It could be the drive-by-wire throttle. Our cars, like the G37, still have e-throttles. It does a self test when you first turn on your car, and you can hear it go back to home position when you turn it off.

That's the only whine I would notice besides 1/2 gear whine lol.

It certainly sounds like the kind of sound that could be a fuel pump. The only thing is, our fuel pump is on the tank itself, and the sound seems to come from up front. Maybe the sound just carries funny though.

In any case, it doesn't really bother me, but I do hear it, and I just wanted to track down what the hell it is.

Is the fuel pump in-tank since I was thinking the fuel pressure regulator would be situated in the engine bay. If that's the case, then the regulator is loud. 350Z had this noise whose pitch changes when you rev it. It's loud on cold starts.

The_Travism 07-29-2009 10:32 AM

I notice a possibly similar noise. It is an intermittent high pitched whine that seems to be coming from the center dash behind where the nav system would be (I don't have the nav system or sports package, pretty much just the basic touring). I hear it only when moving and it does not vary with engine speed or car speed. Road noise does not cover it up. It sounds like one of the highest frequencies I hear on a commercial airplane when flying. It can continue for minutes or hours and stop for the same random amount of time. It isn't my tinitus as I can ignore that and it will go away, but it has a similar pitch and doesn't go away! Really kills the enjoyment of driving the car.

ALL 370Z & G37 ECUs being replaced if you bring them in.
Problem Solved: Elmination of the high pitch frequency noise coming from ECU and hurting peoples' ears.

I know this is a very old thread but I was wondering is people targeted this sound.
I Have a very sensitive ear and hear this annoying sound when radio is off and windows are up. My friend who got the Z the same day I did has the same sound.
Any solutions?
