Crackling / popcorn sound when I park.

My temps are all in line, but something under the car is making a boiling / popping / crackling noise after I turn it off. Doesn't require driving the car hard or anything like that. What is making the noise, and can I replace something to fix it? I'm worried there is transmission or differential fluid that is old or something and is boiling. I have a 6MT sport package.

USMCASA 03-12-2011 07:05 PM

i'm pretty sure its cooling sound and not something broken. mine does it too

SPOHN 03-12-2011 07:06 PM

There's a search feature here that's nice. Many threads on this issue. It's considered normal.

sucasa 03-12-2011 07:10 PM

Completely normal. Enjoy the car..

yakz 03-12-2011 07:51 PM

Okay, it's normal. I can accept that. What is making the noise?

6MT 03-12-2011 07:56 PM

Ahh.....There's nothing quite like trying to diagnose a problem over the internet.

LuckyJinx 03-12-2011 07:58 PM

The Z's have a special feature when your oil temp rises, its cooking some popcorn. When it gets too high, you turn off the car and go to the back. Grab under the car and you have a fresh bowl of steaming popcor ready to eat. Seriously its the computer.. I think.

spearfish25 03-12-2011 08:29 PM

Exhaust cooling. Normal.

I'm telling ya, its popcorn.

6MT 03-12-2011 11:44 PM

It's the muffler bearings. They rattle. Perfectly normal. Muffler bearings, yep!

USMCASA 03-13-2011 10:08 AM

i've always been told it was the cat cooling down

spearfish25 03-13-2011 10:21 AM

The car is making popcorn. Why do you have to always be so critical???

sfgiants6905 03-01-2013 08:44 AM

popcorn noise

I have 2007 dodge charger rt with the same problem I turn the car off and hear popcorn like sound from the left rear end of the car and feels like it wants to shut off. I had the boiling sound before and it was the car exhaust(hole in the rear end pipe water coming out) . My girlfriend has 350z and its a really nice car. The popcorn noise you describe only at stop signs, after the car shut off & low speeds 4 mph or less ?

Huck 03-01-2013 08:48 AM

You're probably just hearing your headlight fluid cooling down, especially if you are running your drl's and your headlights at the same time. Lots of heat to dissipate.

What the heck? Am I missing something? You turn the car off...OK. Then the car feels like it wants to shut off?

How can the car feel like it wants to shut off if it's already of? :icon14:

Probably because it's a Dodge :stirthepot:

Baer383 03-01-2013 03:16 PM

I would look underneath the car to see if there is a red light or green light,if the green light is on your good but if the red light is on whatever you do don't turn the car on or BOOM:icon17:

CDepp 03-01-2013 03:59 PM

My guess: bubbling coolant in the block. The pump is now off when the engine stops, so the fluid is sitting in a multiple-hundred (300-400) degree oven.

:gtfo2: Chargers don't use coolant. You plug'em in and they work.

He may be missing his piston return spring. I honestly wouldn't trust the Internet diagnosis and ask you local Nissan dealer to check for it. I heard there were a few 2009's that didn't get one. It's not a huge deal, just get it checked

Yeah it's probably the catalytic converter. However, you might want to do a visual inspection and make sure you didn't get something plastic stuck to any part of your exhaust system. I once ran over a small piece of construction grade plastic sheet in my 350Z and it caught onto my catalytic converter and made all kinds of weird noises and smells. I had to go through all kinds of stupid gyrations before I got it all off and the smell went away.

:iagree:
It's most likely the cats making that sound.

Most cars make that sound, it gets even louder when you drive it like a douche.

tWeEzY 03-09-2013 09:22 AM

First time i moved into a house w/ a garage I heard the same sound. Freaked me out a lil cuz i'd never heard it on my car before. I'd only heard it on my parents mini van whenever we'd pull into the driveway.

Naum16 04-24-2013 09:32 PM

Would changing the muffler bearing eleimante this noise. In mine it's always there and gets worst when I go hard on it, but it's always making that sound even when at a light my buddy outside could somewhat hear it

Naum16... This is your problem

Naum16 04-24-2013 09:38 PM

Just asking if anyone has solved this problem obviously it is but it's good to hear other people's oppionion. Instead of going and paying money for nissan to look at it maybe someone else has come across this and I can learn what to do. But thanks anyway lol

The only solution would be to either insulate the FÜCK out of the exhaust so you just can't hear it, or to not run an exhaust, lol

It's very common on every car

Naum16 04-24-2013 09:45 PM

I understand but you don't run a car threw a production line if there is a smallest of a thing stupid people. It's whatever , just a clump of steal anyway
