Best Sporty Coupe

I posted a couple weeks ago that the Z is a black sheep when it comes to reviews, comparisons, etc. Here is some more support for my argument. Who's missing from this 'best sporty coupe for under $50k' voting list?

AutoWeek Poll - AutoWeek Magazine

igotcabada 02-24-2011 08:25 AM

I voted for the Fiat in protest

Econ 02-24-2011 08:28 AM

hmmm wait a second...

LOL at the Fiat and Volvo being there, but no Z

Zaggeron 02-24-2011 08:32 AM

Hmmm, perhaps because the Z is not a "Sporty Coupe" -- it is a sports car. Notice there is no Z4 or Boxster both which start under 50k -- though neither will stay there for long :). There is also no MX-5.

The RX-8 is perhaps a counter-example to this, but it does have 4 doors and 4 seats

You're kidding, right?

Notice that all of the cars in that list have... BACK SEATS! They are sports coupes, NOT sports cars.

If this list was "best sports cars under $50k" then you'd have a legitimate greivance, but otherwise, the Z doesn't belong on the list.

Oh good, confirmation that Mustang's, Camaro's and Challenger's are not sports cars. This should pacify those car forums. :stirthepot: :stirthepot: :stirthepot:

ProfessorDave 02-24-2011 10:27 AM

I'm so confused! Do I own a sporty car or a sports car? Because I will no longer enjoy my Z if I get the wrong answer! :-)

flashburn 02-24-2011 10:37 AM

I believe it is actually a "Sporty Sports Coupe Car".

I believe if its 2+2 its a spourts coupe. If its a german or italian sports coupe its suddenly accented to Coupé. And if its a 2 seater its a sports car. Lol.

Either way, OP you gotta realize the 2 seat sports car market is Tiny. You have the miata, a 4 banger, the Z, a 6, then you have a corvette V8 and then you can throw in Bimmer another 6. The only car of all that actually directly competes with the Z is the vette because it comes in convertible and hardtop as well. The others are verts and maybe the Z convert compares but the Z coupe is out in the cold.

I must admit though, the op has somewhat of a point. If you notice? The nissan brand as a whole gets very little press. The G which I think competes on many levels due to having many variants, from coupe, convert, and sedan still garners very little press in comparos. It does seem like honda or bmw can add a toilet paper dispenser to there cars and it makes the front cover of C&D, R&T and blog on the internet. The altima which I feel is the only family sedan with a true sports car suspension and true sports car gearing in manual mode with the 3.5se gets no respect for this feat. The altima will knock your socks off in street driving compared to the accord, hyundai or toyota. The only sedan to give close to this much FWD fun is a mazda 6. But nissan won't get that press.
When the Z came out it was all about SYNCRO and NISMO. It didn't seem to matter that Nissan perfected the automanual slushbox with the 7at. It didn't matter that the 7at is the only slushbox that 98% mimmicks a dct. Vvel got some press but not what it desrved. And after 3 model years I have yet to read a review on the non sport 370z compared to a sport. I have no idea on performance or brake quality on the base Z. I have not read how does a base Z compare in features, quality compared to other cars priced at around 32k.
Maybe its not done because without sport and touring package the Z is substandard??? Maybe it offers more in the price point??? I don't know? But I would like to read about it from several magazines even if the only comparo is price. I don't believe "you don't cross-shop a Z vs a camaro, mustang, bmw," like a lot of people say cuz I have seen many a convert on this forum and others, so indirect comparos are necessary sometimes.

In conclusion, though the OP picked a Totally wrong battle with this thread, there is a lot of truth to what he is saying as a general statement toward not only Z but the nissan brand.

JACKPAC 02-24-2011 12:03 PM

No Corvette for same reason.

never underestimate the confusion that getting absolutely precisely clear on the meaning of the terms in question will engender.

ProfessorDave 02-24-2011 12:25 PM

Whew! I am so relieved that I know what the Z is now. For a brief time I was afraid it was an SUV.

That's a "denying the antecedent" fallacy

Example of fallacious reasoning:

Premise: if something is a 2-seat sporty car, then it is a sports car
Premise: the Mustang, Challenger, and Camaro are not 2-sear sporty cars
-----------------------------------------------------
therefore: Mustang, Challenger, and Camaro are not sports cars

whap whap waaaa ... no soup for you!!

samb03 02-24-2011 03:48 PM

When I was researching the 370 I was kinda disapointed with how much subjective information was out there. Most magizines don't re-review a car that they have already tested without some significant changes made to it. Nissan came out with it in 08. Offered a couple different colors for it 09, made some of the options from previous years standard in 10 (in-cabin filter, ect..). There are too many new cars coming out to being "wasting" pages in a car that isn't any different that the one they reviewed a year or 2 ago. If Nissan wants to keep their cars in the mags they will have to up the hp 10 or so ever year, tweak suspenions settings, and hand out face lifts more often.

It is just like in the sport bike world. No matter how good a bike is when it comes out. It may get good reviews the next year if it is unchanged, but by year number 3 it is the "red headed step child" and will be all but forgotten even in the shootout issues.

Cmike2780 02-24-2011 04:13 PM

It was featured on Top Gear UK. What more can you ask for. There's only so much you can talk about a car that has been on the market for 3 years without significant changes. You don't hear a lot about most sports cars in general unless its new or they want to compare it to something new.

I'm pretty sure that KBB and JDPower, Assoc. list the Z as a sports car. Seeing as even the industry standard for naming is so variable, and with all the luxury commodities that sports cars have the option to have, there will never be a definitive answer. One day we'll have a seat material more durable than forged aluminum, softer than suede/alcantara, and lighter than a couple stacks of paper.

I recommend looking up a couple of Korean BBQ restaurants. Unfortunately, none specifically come to mind. It doesn't take much asking around to find them, since they tend to be "hidden" jewels despite the fact they get a lot of business.

fairladyZ34 02-24-2011 04:52 PM

i voted G37 :)

Viera 02-24-2011 04:54 PM

G37 brotha!!

370Z Purist 02-24-2011 05:03 PM

The G37 rings more of a sport luxury coupe, especially considering Infiniti is the luxury brand... I guess "sporty" goes a long way in defining a car.

Does anyone who has driven an Altima think its really a competitor to the Z?? I love the Altima...for my wife ..whenever she does the shopping or brings the grand kids to school.. its nice and smooth..with a pleasant back seat...very practical.. It never bothers anyone ...nor does it give anyone a roller-coaster like thrill-ride like at the amusement park.. its more like the paddle boats .. . it has everything.. except of course BALLS!!, So if the Altima is a winner here, obviously this is not the right category for the Z to be competing..

Not at all. There is no competition. I guess the Altima coupe 3.5 would be Nissan's sporty alternative to those who want a Z, but need 4 seats. Other than that, they are completely different. I have driven both.

I heard from a reliable source that it's also exclusive. Apparently Nissan only sells them to rap stars these days. Get out there and make those Veyron drivers jealous! :driving:

Nissan hand delivers you an invitation to buy a Z. It's like waiting in line on Black Friday, except Nissan comes straight to your door. ;)

Sporty coupe = coupe with 4 seats

sports car = 2 seater

is the 3.5 motor that is in the altima the same one that was in the 350z.
if so that would make it kind of bad xss

I believe its a less tuned version of the VQ35DE that was in the 03-06 350Z. It has less power in a heavier car, so its not actually that awesome.
