Newbie Question

I'm OLD and haven't bought a car in 12 years so forgive my ignorance pls. In my "end of life crisis" I've been toying with the idea of a new Z but no one ever discusses the stupid things that us oldies used to worry about. Does the Z come from the factory with "undercoating" and "rust proofing"? THANKS, J

I think you will find that just about most cars will rust over time. If the city you live in uses salt to melt snow then expect the car to build some rust.

Wo.... you have to go back about 25 to 30 years ago for that one. The last new car I had rustproofed was my 1983 Z-28 H.0. I took it to Ziebart and payed about 250 dollars for a lifetime warranty for a company that went out of business because factory rustproofing kept getting better every year:icon17:

The simple answer (from another "oldie") is "yes" to the rustproofing and "no" to the undercoating.

However, the rustproofing done at the factory is way better now than, say, 20 years ago. If "NYS" in your profile stands for "New York State" and you plan on driving on salted roads, then you might still want to have aftermarket undercoating applied (plus it may cut down on road noise in the cabin).

Dad? Is that you? Is there something wrong with the Legacy? Does Mom know you want to sell it? I'm telling Mom!

:bowrofl: end of life crisis? Lol

You will be reborn again with the z. Yes, these cars come with very good corrosion protection from the factory. :)

Get the Z it will make you feel 10 years younger:ughdance:

oleg 02-07-2011 11:50 PM

Can't you just get an under carriage wash once or twice a week in the winter to minimize the rust from salt?

I have owned a 1988 Mustang GT, a 1995 Trans Am, and a 2001 Trans Am. Along with a '93 crown vic, and a 2002 Infiniti G20.

None ever had an issue with rust, and most had coated undersides where rust was of concern (wheel-wells, etc.)

Unless you just LOVE! driving your car in snow/salt, and never wash the undercarriage, rust is the last thing to worry with regarding a modern car. Buy with confidence.

Thanks again for all the responses........

You don't need these. Modern cars do very well without them for a decade or more in adverse climates like humid saltwater beaches and the midwest which salts roads all winter. Technically, "rustproofing" is covered by modern alloys (much more aluminium and less carbon steel), galvanizing, stainless steel, and paints that are much better than 20+ years ago, but in the design of the car rather than some afterspray on silicon.
