just wondering if anyone has any valid numbers to back up either side. i just always heard an auto wastes hp and a manual delivers more.

Vegitto-kun 01-04-2011 05:30 PM

well as far as I can tell it has been dyno proven that the AT loses more HP than the MT but for some reason (shifting speed?) it is abit faster

halogodx 01-04-2011 05:49 PM

I'd say auto's faster in the aspect that to launch the car you kick up the RPM anywhere from 1500-1800 and get off the brake and let it rip, i do 13.35 @105 mph constant doing that, with crappy street tires. The manual takes a lot more skill to get a good launch of the line.

The ratios and final drive ratio for auto and manual are entirely different, which may explain some of the difference. The 7AT is geared lower which means you have to shift sooner, so it loses effective torque while accelerating earlier than the 6MT but it puts more torque down which seems to balance it out.

1st gear is short and second gear is extremely short in the 7AT - you stay in it for 19MPH versus 26MPH for the 6MT, then the 7AT gears are longer.
(6MT: 41/26/28/27/39 - 7AT: 36/19/31/39/51)

I don't believe dyno tests show a significant difference between the two - 370z.com Magazine shows 7AT stock at 267hp / 220 ft-lb versus a 6MT stock at 262hp / 210 ft-lb (different days, same dyno), so the 7AT really gives up nothing at the wheels either.

No, what it gives up is the satisfaction of driving the car.

In automatic, car drive you!

********. it is just something those MT freaks say.

a regular slushbox where you just put it in D aaand thats it yet.

but you cant say that about a flappy pedal/stick shift thingy AT.

You're right, feathering the clutch with those paddle-shift...oh wait. There is no clutch. There's an old viscous coupling known as a torque converter. Pass.

Vegitto-kun 01-04-2011 06:10 PM

yes il go pass you while you go and feather your clutch while touching your phallic shift stick :p

wishihadnav 01-04-2011 06:14 PM

...and I will pass you when your automatic is in the shop. I know the 370Z may be a special case with the junk synchro's, but most manuals WAY outlast their auto counterparts. Been there, done that.

Pffft. There's nothing wrong with driving an automatic. If you want to be a "real man" when it comes to driving, then turn off your power steering, you wussy! :icon17:

sonic370 01-04-2011 07:33 PM

can't we all just get along:ughdance::driving:

one thing we do agree on we all bought the 370! or most of us...
