Black Ice

Was heading home from some holiday shopping as I knew we had potential for freezing rain. Roads seemed fine, but as I came over the crest of a small hill that was exposed to the wind, my car suddenly broke loose and started heading towards the curb, corrected and got enough traction and car went left, still sliding, into the opposite lane. Could see headlights ahead, corrected, started sliding right towards the curb again (all the while seeming to pick up momentum as i started down the hill), once again corrected and back into the on coming lane. Finally caught traction and got it under control in time to get back in my lane. :bowrofl:

I have been driving a long time and have a lot of snow experience, but I have never gotten that out of control so suddenly. I was literally at the point where I knew I wasn't going to be able to save it anymore when it finally got some traction. Man, what a ride.

Moral, DO NOT go out when it might freeze!

What did you buy?

I'm glad you made it. Black ice is right up their with the worst.

m4a1mustang 12-27-2010 11:08 AM

Black ice is serious business! Glad you made it through alright.

SmoothZ 12-27-2010 11:12 AM

Been there, done that with black ice. Don't care for it. Good thing you got her back under control.

christian370z 12-27-2010 11:15 AM

Nice to hear you were able to correct without much fuss! Black ice is the worst mostly because you cannot predict it and many times cannot see it before you are on it. I spun out once with my Saab due to black ice and no matter how much I tried to correct it, I had zero traction so it was in vain.

onzedge 12-27-2010 11:17 AM

Good job keeping it together.
Between Santa Rosa and Eureka on Hwy 101 it can be quite hazardous as well. Black ice is very difficult to spot and I have found myself all the way across into oncoming lanes a few times.
Oldtimers in those parts will tell you to look for sparkling roadway in the headlights -- but this is not 100%.

I thought this thread was about the smell of the black ice air freshener.

It's gross btw.

Glad you ok though,

This is why sports cars are made for those who live in the land of the eternal sun (says the guy who lives in Seattle)!

Lol, experience will also teach to get the right tires and car for freezing conditions.

THMotorsports 12-27-2010 04:48 PM

On my way to the office this morning I saw 3 cars spun out within about 1/4 mile of each other. I chalked it up to black ice.

I was changing lanes at one point, passing a semi, and the back end of my jeep got squirrly. Luckily I was able to catch it.

Yes, it was Wednesday night. I knew there was potential for ice that night, but thought I was beating it home.

Down in the South (Atlanta) we don't switch to winter tires as it rarely snows or ices up. This is doubly so in December. I have lived her 22 years and have never seen it this cold. It has been since 1882 since we had snow on Christmas day, but we had it this year!

cgl23 12-27-2010 08:26 PM

That Wednesday was crazy in Atlanta. I stopped at the traffic light at Courtland and Ralph McGill just before it goes over the highway. There was Charger next to me that kept spinning as we tried to move off. I crossed my fingers and hoped for the best. Luckily my tires found traction and we managed to get moving and over the bridge.

Summer Tires = NOT driving in the Winter, especially on black ice! :shakes head:

wilsonp 12-28-2010 12:07 AM

We don't get much snow in Southern Virginia either, but I still switch to all season tires due to cold temps. You're dime temps dont look too bad, but your lows ar a bit colder than recommended for the summer tires.
