I've heard this mentioned several times. And I know Nissan is stupid. But I seriously wonder if the pump relies on gas in tank to keep cool. Or at least how much fluid is needed in the tank to keep it cool.

FWIW, I typically use 18+ gallons every tank - rarely do I fill up with less than 17.5 gal. After nearly 70K miles, and a number of brutally hot Texas summers, I've had zero issues with my fuel pump :twocents:

Just my Opinion. The fuels probably lubricates the pump, and cools.

I think it is fine as long as gas is being pumped through regardless of the remaining fuel level in the tank.

I did hear that some fuel pumps are lubricated by the fuel, but I don't know if it is the case for our cars.

I've had the same problem on both my 09 Base Z and '12 Roaster Sprt.

i was on a road trip this week and wasnt paying attention- heard the Chime, looked down and it said ---- miles to empty. made it 14 miles to the nearest gas station. was sweating a little but she made it LOL

i fill when im at like one dot over half. mostly because i dont drive my hobby cars that much so i want to keep cycling fresh fuel in there...and also for keeping the sensors lubed. no issue with no dots at top 6yrs old this yr.

Wow you guys let it get low! Mine gets to 160 range and 5 minutes after it will start reading 25 miles left on the tank.

Driving south from Bend Oregon, there isnt any fuel to be had till you get to Weed. Yah..ya heard me. Weed California is the first fuel for 3 hours...
So I got down to one dot, the display was "--", the wife was irate....things were bleak. Then the triangle popped up, I just knew I was pushin. But..made it to the Chevron and only took 17 gals to fill up. What the ?... I could have made it to Redding dammit... lol. This setup has lots of give...

just fill up at 1/4, why chance it..i see these dumb fux carrying a gas can walkin to get gas..I dont get it.

The fuel pump isn't lubed by the fuel. It's a sealed motor, that has an impeller on the end of the shaft. The fuel may help cool the motor some.

some people get is so low? This is scary. I'm almost always having a panic attack when I get to 30 ish. And if it's 25 I'm already dead inside. That's how much I don't trust it because the numbers keep dropping fast.

I thought I'd share my experience with this. I'm on my second 370Z. Upgraded from my 09' Monterey Blue Sport Touring (no nav) to a 15' Solid Red Nismo Tech. I ran out of gas one time in the blue one. I had it towed to the dealer and they started it right up with 57 miles reading on the range computer. The same as it was when it stalled on the side of the road after I had just taken a slightly hard right turn. Obviously I would find out later that this was the issue. I have buddy of mine that this happened to just recently in his 09' Sport Touring (w nav) and sure enough it was right after a long sweeping right hand off ramp. So it's definitely an issue with low fuel and hard right turns. But what no one has mentioned on this thread yet is I think the issue has been addressed by Nissan, at least somewhat.

In my 09' Z I used to be able to fill the tank to the full 19.5 gallons at the pump regularly. With my 15', I've never been able to fill it passed 17 gallons, ever... not once my my almost 3 years of owning it. My range is also no where near as high as it used to get with my old Z either. After a fill up in my old Z it would read somewhere between 350-400miles. Now when I fill up I'm lucky if it reads anything over 300 miles. My driving style hasn't changed and neither have my habits of letting it drop to between 45 miles and "---" before fill ups either.

Now I'm sure Nissan didn't give the newer Zs a smaller gas tank-I've looked this up to be sure and they haven't. Plus I couldn't imagine them changing the gas tank since they haven't touched any other mechanical hardware in the 9+ years it's been in production lol. So the only explanation is that they've recalibrated the range computer to show the low fuel warning when it has 2.5-3 extra gallons of fuel instead of whatever it was set at before (probably between 1-2 gallons). The gauge itself is still as inaccurate as ever (going from 50 miles to "---" after like 10 miles of driving). But at least it seems like they've slapped a bandaid on the issue.

I figure a person with a newer Z would probably never check this thread to confirm or say all this because they more than likely have never experienced the issue since I haven't now with my Nismo. But since I've had both an 09' and a 15' I can speak from both sides. If anyone else has a newer Z or has had both maybe they can confirm.

15 370Z Sport here and I've seen this issue crop up twice around the 1/4 tank mark. The range drastically goes from 100 or so miles, to 50, to "----".

Is this worth having Nissan work on or are they just putting in another faulty pump or sensor? I just plan on filling up between a quarter and half a tank from now on to avoid the confusion :eekdance:

If you ask any person with any experience working on fuel systems, they will tell you that the gas gauge is only an 'estimation' of the amount of fuel remaining in the gas tank. :eek:

It's not a precise measurement, if you want a precise measurement, you will have to go to a weight based sensor and even those will not be 100% drop dead accurate. :shakes head:


Bottom line, figure out what distance between fill ups you are comfortable with and fuel up accordingly. :tup:
