Strange noise in cabin

Hey all;
I have an '09 Nismo 370Z with @ 8,000 mi. on it that I've had since May of this year. For the first four months that I had the car this issue never occurred. Beginning in Sep't., when the car is parked overnight or all day without being used, at start up when you begin to drive away there is a "clicking" sound coming from under the dash on the drivers side. The clicking follows the RPM's of the engine and only lasts for about a minute. Also, it seems that with the cooler weather the sound has become a bit louder when it happens. I'm very interested to know if anyone else has experienced this noise since I had a technician ride with me and his reaction was "never heard anything like that before" but the shop foreman is trying to tell me that "it is normal" for the 370Z!!
Thanks for any info.

Is it only while your moving? Have the wheels / brakes checked out for anything stuck or anything damaged. Can it be heard outside the car?

dthem370 11-17-2010 12:21 PM

Yea I had the same exact problem. I took it in to the dealer about 6 months ago and we couldn't replicate the problem and it has never came back since but before that it had happened like 3 times.

It could be your fuel injectors

Everytime I have a strange noise in the cabin, I ask her to be quiet. :)

Disclaimer: I love you honey, please don't be mad.

ZOMG... :shakes head:

So I guess everyone should be listening for "clicking sounds" in the passenger cabin as the miles put on? :icon14:

I think I remember seeing a "Strange noise in cabin" section in the quick reference guide booklet.

Will have to check though.

i hate to say it, but worst case scenario it could be your timing chain flopping around in its case. Had a nissan altima with the vq engine in it and while in my case it didnt happen till around 150k miles the technician at the time had said he had gotten a few in that had way less miles on them that were doing the same thing. One thing to also check for though is your oil level as the timing chain uses the engine oil to put pressure on the guide rails for the chain if i remember correctly and if it is kept at a low level for an extended period of time it can wear the guides out prematurely, im not saying that it is but if it only does it when the car is warming up it may be good to just check it.

Read the following Nissan TSBs to determine whether either is applicable:

NTB08-053b 350Z-370Z; TAPPING NOISE FROM DASH AREA
WHEN ENGINE IS RUNNING

2009 370Z coupe (Z34)

IF YOU CONFIRM
A tapping noise coming from the dash area when the engine is running at operating temperature,

NOTE: This tapping noise, if it should occur, sounds like a screwdriver being tapped on the work bench. The tapping speed increases and decrease with the engine RPM and may require engine RPM of about 3000 for the noise to be heard.

DETERMINE IF
The noise is coming from inside the heater core (see Service Procedure).

ACTION
“Back-Flush” the heater core to remove gray silicone debris.

NTB10-077 ABS SELF CHECK NOISE

SERVICE INFORMATION

If you identify:

• Clicking, knocking, clunking, buzzing, or thumping noise coming from the engine compartment area; and

• The noise occurs only once during the first few seconds of driving at approximately 16 MPH; and

• The noise occurs only once per ignition cycle (ignition OFF > ON) and does not occur again until the ignition is cycled.

NOTE: The noise may be louder after the vehicle has not been operated for a prolonged period of time.

The above condition is normal and does not need repair.

Each time the ignition is turned on and the vehicle is driven at about 16 mph, the ABS/VDC system performs a “Self-Check” to confirm components of the ABS/VDC system are operating correctly.

This “Self-Check” function creates the noise described above.

If the brakes are being applied when the “Self-Check” occurs, a vibration may be felt in the brake pedal and an increased level of noise may be noticed.

NOTE:

• Refer customers to the Owners Manual, Section 5, Starting and driving, Brake system on the Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS). The “Self-test feature” section provides additional explanation.

• The speeds described above refer specifically to Versa, Sentra, Altima, and Maxima. However, any vehicle fitted with ABS or ABS/VDC will have a “Self-Check” which is triggered in similar circumstances.

Wow - clicking IS normal on our Z's. :D

Seems the first TSB is more applicable. If his ABS self check "clicking noise" varies with engine rpm, there may be other issues in store.
