New here and looking hard

I currently have a 95 240sx w/ a 375hp chevy 350 in it. It keeps over heating. I got a fan shroud built for it but that was after I blew a head gasket in the 600mile motor (Idleing to charge the battery and got to talking with a neighbor). I got a new job in August that is a pretty good pay jump for me 70-100K a year. It is commision based in the oil field so it just depend on the how busy I am.

With winter setting in I don't feel like riding all winter long on my bike (07 Kawi ninja zx-10r). I have 35 mile one way commute. I have done it before but not looking forward to doing this year.

I have a couple otions.1. pull the heads and see it they are warped/cracked. If good new gaskets and hope the shroud cools it down. 2. order new heads for a grand install them and see if the old ones are good/bad later still just hoping that the car is reliable after the fix. 3. Take a car payment and get the 370Z now that I was planning on paying cash for in 6-8 months. Right now I can put down a bout 8K.

I have friend that is a tech at a Nissan dealer. A saleman owns him a favor or two and quoted a new Nismo for 35-36. He was just ball parking it and will have to crunch numbers when the time comes. Said that I could get one cheaper if I was willing to take an executive demo.

I still have to call the insurance company to get a quote to see if I am willing to pay their rates. 29 single/ no kids/ spotless driving record with no claims. I know it won't be cheap but I don't want to pay 4 grand a year just to hope I never have to use it.

You are in a pickle. If the head repair works it will be cheaper than a new car, yet the new car is a sure thing for reliability. Resurfacing the heads etc has worked and not worked for me in the past. Two Datsun B210's one was fixed, one wasn't.

I would not count on your new sales job to provide steady income the first year. How about a third choice. A cheap running car out of the $8K now, and with more financial certainty later, the Z. By waiting you may get a better interest rate with your new higher W2, offsetting the cheap cars cost. Just a thought. Good luck.

:iagree:

If you are not in any hurry just buy a beater. It will be nice to have even when you get your Z.

if i was in your shoes i would get a regular car for now and see where your job takes you. if you can maintain decent income for a few years 2-3yrs you'll have enough $ to buy the nismo cash while keeping your regular car. that's kinda nice imho...

do you have a house or garage? might want to work on that as well so that you can keep your nismo garaged at night and times you are away.

"Looking Hard", huh?

Is that a 370z in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me? :bowrofl:

Ah, man. I feel ya! I'm sittin' here, toolin' around in my Mustang, dreaming of owning a Z. And I like my Mustang. I like it a lot. 45K miles now and not one single problem. And the rumble of that V8 when you start it up... it curls your toes! (helped by the addition of an FRP axle-back exhaust!)

So I guess my situation is a little different than yours in that I have a reliable car now and you don't. But we're facing the same circumstances in that it would be a bit of a financial stretch to buy a new car at this particular time (evil, thy name is "woman"!).

So I'm gonna have to go with the fuddy-duddies here :p and recommend that you wait until you've been in your job for a year or so and are more financially stable. It's kind of like when you sit down at the poker table: if you're worried about losing the money you sit down with, then you won't be playing at your best. As well, if you're worried about the insurance and all that, I'd just wait until that's not even a concern.

In my heart of hearts, I'd say "go for it!", cause life is short and we wants it, the precious! But the rational part of the brain is usually correct and it says to wait.

Sigh... :shakes head:

Happened to me when I drifted my Nismo lol. And I believe you should get the Nismo now. Why work all day and don't play? Im all for hard work, trust me, but I also want those who work hard to play hard.

I contacted my insurance company. 500 deductible is $71/mo 1000 is 57. So I don't think that is too bad. My friends sales man contacted me today. He found me a manual sport model in black cherry (pretty loaded luminated door seals and mats). $498/mo payment (which I can do with out job bonus).I am getting with my friend's empleyee discount. I haven't even driven one yet so they are giving him the keys to a used one that just came on the lot (base model w/ 6K on the odo) to drive 250miles 1way so I can test drive one before I comment. I can't complain about the service for only dealing with on the phone today.

I still plan on having it paid for in 6-8 months. Just live on my salary and dump all my bonus at the car payment. this way I can atleast build some credit the only other loan I have had was a 6K loan for my bike. No student loans or anything. I live pretty frugal but I like nice things.

I have trouble letting go of vehicles. I hate to take a loss or I like them and have plans for them in the future. I already have my first car a 73 malibu (needs a engine overhaul), 89 240sx with CA18det swap that ate a turbo, the 95 240sx with bad head gasket, a 81 yamaha Seca 750 motorcycle that has electrical issues, and my only reliable ride 07 zx10r ninja with 25K miles on it. I don't think a beater is a good choice for me. I do have the malibu commented to sale. The guy just has to show up with the money and it will be gone.
