Owners of both Coupe And Cab --- comparo pls

So, I am in So Cal and I definitely misssed my cab. I missed the wind, the smell of Pacific Coast Hwy, the sunny-cloudy days, and the dual-personality car.

From people who has or had both, how is the cab? Any issues? Wind noise? Pluses? Minuses?

Do you regret having bought the cabriolet?

I actually don't mind trading my coupe for a cab.

Thx

Um. I believe you're speaking of a roadster. A cab is a VW.
Sorry, I'm anal.

Sorry but I used cabriolet and convertible interchangably.

To me a roadster has a chopped-up windshield. :)

Love mine. No regrets at all......yet.

I have not had a convertible 370 but my previous car was an S2000. IMO the convertible is more worrisome than it is worth. There were so many places I wouldn't drive it just because I was afraid someone would slash the top. Not to mention all the extra maintenance and cost associated.

However I will state that I live in an area that is high 80s and 90s with humidity for 4 months out of the year. So my use of the convertible was limited. Socal is probably a better place for a convertible.

:tiphat:So, what's the deal guys? No more feedback?

I owned a 350z Roadster and now own a Nismo 370. The road noise in both cars is definitely there, but worth the hastle. I do miss the ability to drop the top and, if I had it to do over again, I'd probably go back to the ragtop. That being said, I had to replace the ragtop on my 350 after just 4 years. Damn that was pricey.

The cabin on the ragtop is quite compressed, so if you don't like tight spaces, stick with the hatchback.

cab83,

I own a coupe. I've driven convertibles since I started driving. I agree, there is something nice about verts. If I could, I'd get a Z Roadster. But I'm enjoying my coupe. It's terrific fun.

I have driven both, the convertible is nice, but I prefer the looks of the hard top

I was hoping that a member here has both cars so we can have an apple to apple comparison. Specifically I would like to know if there is cowl shake.

As a background, when I had a Supra, the car felt like it had a loose wheel whenever I took the Targa top off. Very very annoying!

I just don't want to trade in my coupe for a cab if the handling will be very different. Yes, I have heard that the Z was initially designed as a cab, but hey, I need real owner's feedback. :)

That's a reasonable request, I think, because most coupes are more rigid than convertibles, so there is usually a handling difference in favor of the coupe. I don't have personal experience with the roadster. Hopefully you will get the feedback you are after. But worst case, you might just have to test-drive a cab and see what you think (oh the humanity). ;)

why don't you just test drive one for yourself?

c41006 11-02-2010 03:21 PM

My only problem with the roadster is the way it looks

I don't think they will let me drive it for 30 miles. In my opinion, to get a very realistic comparison, one must have at least 3 weeks of actual driving ownership to have a realistic comparison. :p

I agree with this. Some dealerships will let you take a car overnight if they feel you are serious about buying. A local dealership gave my buddy a new IS350 for a whole weekend.

Very little cowl shake, especially when compared with my old Del Slow...

Still trying to figure out if the roll bars are considered rollover protection (if the answer is yes I will be taking it to the track)

Very happy with the roadster overall. It is fairly quiet with the top up even compared to the coupe.

Would buy it again...

I agree with above comments. I have a 370ZR, after having the 350ZR. I find the 370ZR "tighter" feeling than the 350ZR, and no cowl shake or feeling like it isn't rigid due to being a vert. Also, the upgraded top seems to produce a quieter interior with the top up, although there still is some degree of wind noise but it's very tame. Only complaint I guess I could voice is the mechanics of the top itself during up/down are "clunkier" than it was on the 350. I have no regrets thus far with my roadster purchase and love putting the top down every chance I get!
