How far can you go once the fuel indicator turns to dashes?

Today the fuel gauge showed two LED lights and the screen showed I have 50 miles left.

Then it turned to one LED light, then i saw the screen go from

41...38...35...33...31...29...28 -> _ _ _ (3 blinking dashes)

in a matter of about 4 miles(10 minutes) on local roads.

Then I found a gas station and filled up the tank. 17 gallons.

At what point does the last LED turn off, anybody knows? and how much further can i drive before the car runs out of fuel?

Kcuba370z 10-27-2010 11:11 PM

lol im never gonna try to find out

djpathfinder 10-27-2010 11:25 PM

The 370Z's LED gauge fluctuates too much at the top and bottom. At least with an analog gauge, you can see how close the needle is getting to the stop peg.

azn370z 10-27-2010 11:31 PM

If you filled up 17 gallons that means you had 2 gallons left so you could go about 40 miles until it was empty, depending on your type of driving.

The gauge is useless, I am consider filing an investigation claim with NHTSB. I hope you guys can join me

That is not how it works... lol.. I never drive w/ less than 3 leds - one hard turn w/ that little gas = fuel starvation... has happened to me a couple of times... very annoying issue to deal w/

cab83_750 10-28-2010 01:43 AM

Inaccurate gas gauge + fuel starvation = "disaster"

always try to fill up at 4 dots. Stay in low gear and low speed until the next station.

I haven't ever had the starvation issue. But it does kind of concern me.

m4a1mustang 10-28-2010 07:54 AM

Tony put 19.1 gallons in his car once. :icon18:

im in for that.

Dont drive w anything under a 1/4 tank.. as per personal experiance... i somehow managed to run out of gas with three dots left and 78 miles till empty. dont know how it happened but that dealer said that their is nothing wrong with my fuel sender or the gauge. i wouldnt let it go past a 1/4 tank.

Yeah, I hate going under 1/4 tank in any car. Especially on long trips. I tend to fill up before I even hit 1/4 tank everywhere I go... a little paranoid I am. :icon17:

i think on long trips it might be ok but if u drive you car like me :ughdance: the gas likes to slosh around and then the car has no idea how much gas u actually have

m4a1mustang 10-28-2010 08:13 AM

It's more a personal thing... like, "what if aliens attack and I only have 1/4 tank instead of a full tank? Then I can't drive as far to get away and will have to bail on foot and deal with the aliens." :(

USMCASA 10-28-2010 08:40 AM

^what are you talking about? they are already attacking from mexico lol

4r3s 10-28-2010 09:18 AM

The gauge is purposely designed like this in all cars. All cars gas gauge will indicate empty and still have about two gallons left in the tank. Theres two reasons for this, one being the fuel starvation issue mentioned already and the other is to put you into "oh **** I need gas now" mode leaving you plenty of gas to find the nearest gas station. If they didn't leave you that extra 2 gallons of gas once you were on empty there'd be a ton of idiots running out of gas stranded all over the place.

cab83_750 10-28-2010 12:40 PM

You are correct. Unfortunately, on the Z, you could hit fuel starvation if you make aggressive turns.

Not sure yet if aggressive braking could trigger the starvation.

I agree, the fuel indicator on these new Z's are ridiculous....It will go from 36 miles to like 22 within like 3 miles of driving and thats driving it at low RPM's....it bothers the hell out of me lol.

35 miles after it started warning me with the "oh sh*t" type warning, we filled up with 18.5 gallons after idling a bunch in construction traffic.

and whichever way you go, you will run into aliens anyway.

I think it'd be better to have a full tank when you decided to run away from the police. Hell, you know you're going to jail anyway, mind as well drive until you run out of gas the longer the better.
